Miami Dolphins fullback Alec Ingold currently in concussion protocol
The 29-year-old suffered a head injury towards the end of Sunday's practice.
It's unclear what happened. The Dolphins were in a situational team drill with their back against their own end zone when suddenly Ingold appeared to collapse as soon as the ball snapped. Trainers rushed to his side as the entire team took a knee and the crowd at the Baptist Health Training Facility fell silent.
A member of the Dolphins since March 2022, the one-time Pro Bowler plays a crucial role in the team's rushing attack.
'I think Alec Ingold is definitely a big piece to that puzzle with our run game,' Tua Tagovailoa said mid-November 2024.
Ingold's leadership has also proved invaluable as his teammates voted him a captain in back-to-back seasons in 2023 and 2024.
'There's a lot of guys that have leadership skills and play the game to have a 'C' on their chest,' coach Mike McDaniel said in Oct. 2024. 'He proved to every teammate – not that he needed to at all – but he really wore the 'C' on his chest, leading, helping our offense operate but really did some outstanding things at the point of attack against a physical front that's really trying to inflict punishment on fullbacks in general. He was instrumental. He was at the point of attack a ton and had a very, very high execution rate.'
And with many of last year's team leaders no longer with the Dolphins, Ingold was likely going to be relied upon even more from a leadership prespective.
'We lost a lot of great leaders, a lot of great captains, a lot of great production, but every team goes through that,' Ingold said July 22. 'If we can utilize some of that turnover to have fresh faces, fresh opportunities, people stepping up and coming into their own, I think we have to trust that. So I think we have the roster and the team where we need it, and it really comes down to trusting, trusting each other in those conversations. So leaders, captains, role players, scout team, like it doesn't really matter – we all need to get on the same page, trusting each other.'

Darren Waller's return is "tricky" with joint practices upcoming
Dolphins tight end Darren Waller remains on the active/physically unable to perform list after coming out of retirement. He is about a week away from working his way back into practice, coach Mike McDaniel said Wednesday, but it's going to be "tricky" with joint practices upcoming. The Dolphins go against the Bears and Lions back-to-back. 'It's a little tricky because you're bringing a guy back, and is his first practice a joint practice?' McDaniel said Wednesday, via the South Florida Sun Sentinel. "So, it's about a week, but it's a little tricky in terms of what practice. We'll feel our way through that, and you're just trying to be smart with that.' Waller, who has not played since the 2023 season, has worked on the side in camp. His agent, Drew Rosenhaus, said on WSVN this week that Waller will be ready for the start of the season. Waller is listed as the starting tight end on the Dolphins' initial depth chart.

In a stunning twist, the Saints cut their starting punter Matthew Hayball before preseason
Well this is a bit of a surprise. The first New Orleans Saints preseason game is just days away, but the team isn't bringing their starting punter with them. In an Aug. 6 release from the team, the Saints announced they have waived punter Matthew Hayball and re-signed rookie quarterback Hunter Dekkers, who was waived on July 1. It's a tough break for Hayball, who won the starting job last summer from Lou Hedley. But the competition isn't over. Two punters remain with the team after the Saints traveled to California for a few days of practices at UC-Irvine before their preseason game with the Los Angeles Chargers, so it'll be rookie free agents James Burnip and Kai Kroeger battling it out these next few weeks. Special teams coordinator Phil Galiano was part of the staff which made Hayball the starter in the first place, but he clearly wants to take things in a new direction after replacing his longtime boss Darren Rizzi. Thomas Morstead set high standards in his decade-plus with the team, but at this point you have to wonder if the Saints shouldn't have just kept him in the first place. They've gone through four different punters in the five years since cutting the fan-favorite Pro Bowler, including Blake Gillikin (2021 and 2022), Hedley (2023), and Hayball (2024), with either Burnip or Kroeger punting in 2025. As for Morstead? He's still punting at age 39, now with the San Francisco 49ers, and if he can hold onto it, he'll return to New Orleans as a visitor on Sept. 14.

Rams' Matthew Stafford Reportedly Week-to-Week With 'Aggravated Disk' in Back
Matthew Stafford's back issue has been a lingering matter for the Los Angeles Rams, and now there's more clarity on the matter. Stafford is nursing an aggravated disk in his back and has received an epidural to assist him with the issue, NFL Network reported on Wednesday morning. The Rams consider Stafford's status as "week-to-week" with guarded optimism that he'll be ready for Week 1 of the regular season. Stafford has been present at the Rams' facility but has not been taking part in team drills due to the injury. The 37-year-old Stafford is entering his fifth season with the Rams, who signed the quarterback to a revised two-year, $84 million deal in February. Last season, the two-time Pro Bowler totaled 3,762 passing yards, 20 passing touchdowns, eight interceptions and a 93.7 passer rating, while completing 65.8% of his passes. Los Angeles is coming off a 10-7 campaign that saw it win the NFC West and later advance to the NFC divisional round. On the injury front, Stafford was limited to nine games in 2022 due to a spinal cord contusion and head injury. As for the rest of their quarterback room, the Rams have Jimmy Garoppolo, Stetson Bennett and Dresser Winn. The Rams open their 2025 preseason on Saturday at home against the Dallas Cowboys and open the regular season at home against the Houston Texans on Sept. 7.
