Explore rural tourism, businesses told
Published on: Wed, Jul 16, 2025 Text Size: Kota Kinabalu: Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Datuk Joniston Bangkuai has encouraged business leaders to explore tourism related opportunities in rural areas to complement the growing industry in urban centres. He said rural tourism is emerging as a key focus for Sabah and presents untapped opportunities for business involvement.
Advertisement Many rural communities, he noted, have already taken the lead in developing community-based tourism, and further support from the private sector would help strengthen and expand these grassroots efforts. Joniston, who also chairs Sabah Tourism Board (STB), said increased business activity in rural areas would contribute to local income opportunities, support overall rural development, and enhance the quality as well as sustainability of existing tourism initiatives. He gave these remarks during a meeting with Kota Kinabalu Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KKCCI) members, led by its President Datuk Michael Lui, who also presented a token of appreciation to Joniston during the session (pic) . The meeting touched on various matters, including tourism recovery and the importance of collaboration between the government and private sector in supporting events and destination promotion. Michael thanked the Ministry and STB for promoting golf tourism and for the support given to KKCCI's golf event in May, while also commending their continued efforts to bring more tourists into Sabah, which he said has helped boost business confidence in Kota Kinabalu. He noted that the current momentum in tourism is encouraging, especially post-pandemic, and said local businesses are feeling the positive effects, with hopes for continued collaboration to attract both international and domestic tourists to Sabah. Another Assembly sitting possible, says Masidi

Kota Kinabalu: There is room for another State Legislative Assembly sitting before the state elections due later this year, said Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun. He stressed the need to table the 2026 State Budget to ensure continuity of government operations. Advertisement 'The budget can be presented either before or after the 17th State Election. But it must be tabled to avoid disruptions to government services early next year. 'For example, we must ensure civil servants are paid and government programmes can proceed as planned. 'Even if elections are called early, there is still enough time to table the budget in November as usual. 'However, if the assembly is dissolved later, we believe we still have a window in December to convene and table the budget before the year ends so there are no hiccups,' he told reporters. On Sabah's fiscal negotiations with the federal government, Masidi acknowledged that both parties have laid their positions clearly. 'Sabah has put its cards on the table, what we want and what we expect. Likewise, the federal government has also presented their side. 'Leaders like Fadillah and Jeffrey have already given their statements. What has been agreed so far will be brought back for respective internal deliberations before both sides return to find mutually acceptable solutions,' he said. Masidi said while Sabah understands the complexity of federal-state fiscal issues, the state will not compromise on what is already enshrined in the Constitution. 'As far as Sabah is concerned, we stand by our previous statements. What is constitutionally provided for cannot be compromised. Sabah deserves to get what it is entitled to,' he said. He acknowledged that the current economic climate does not lend itself to 'a generous attitude' from the federal side. Meanwhile, Masidi said the 'Most Outstanding State' award, while prestigious, is not a declaration that Sabah has already achieved excellence but an acknowledgement of the state government's tireless efforts to move Sabah toward a level of development that had long been elusive. Budget may be tabled before Sabah election: Masidi

Over 4,000 students to benefit from Sabah scholarship boost

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said this marked a significant increase from RM50 million in 2020, reflecting the government's commitment to supporting Sabahans regardless of socio-economic background. Advertisement Hajiji, in a speech delivered by State Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Mohd Arifin Mohd Arif at the Sentosa aid presentation ceremony at UMS on Sunday, said 4,170 students will benefit from the BKNS this year in line with the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) policy. He added that RM77.5 million has been allocated for 13 education aid initiatives in 2024, including Budi, Baik, Semesta and GRS-Subfly, while Yayasan Sabah and Muis also contributed significantly through separate programmes.
