Malaysia cracks down on terror recruitment and fundraising
He stressed that authorities remain vigilant against such threats, whether involving locals or foreigners.
The minister's remarks followed the recent dismantling of the Radical Militants of Bangladesh movement by the Royal Malaysia Police.
The group was reportedly raising funds and recruiting members to support the Islamic State (IS) in Syria and Bangladesh.
'This success shows that our intelligence capabilities are at a very high level.
That is why we can address such threats, and we will never compromise when it comes to terrorism-related matters,' Saifuddin said during a press conference after the ministry's monthly assembly.
On July 4, Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail disclosed that the group collected funds through annual membership fees of RM500 per person, with additional contributions based on members' financial capacity.
The group, estimated to have 100 to 150 members, mostly comprised Bangladeshi nationals working in factories, construction, and petrol stations.
Investigations revealed that recruitment was conducted through social media and messaging apps like WhatsApp and Telegram.
Authorities are still determining the total amount of funds sent to IS-linked groups abroad. - Bernama

Integrated Ops, Stricter Border Control Boost Contraband Seizure In Kelantan
KOTA BHARU, July 17 (Bernama)-- The value of contraband seized in Kelantan surged by almost 78 per cent in the first six months of this year compared to the same period last year, driven by enhanced integrated operations and stricter border controls. Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said RM171.5 million worth of contraband was seized between January and June this year, compared to only RM37.2 million during the corresponding period last year. He described the achievement as a source of pride and a clear indication of the effectiveness of the integrated operations strategy, particularly following the border closure implemented in December 2024. "This success also reflects the positive impact of strategic collaboration between various state and federal enforcement agencies. 'The strong synergy established has been effectively leveraged, resulting in tangible improvements in security control across the state," he said at the monthly assembly of the Kelantan Police Contingent here today. Mohd Yusoff said this significant success was not achieved by chance, but was the result of well-organised efforts, sacrifices and meticulous planning by the entire team. He called for the continued strengthening of cross-agency cooperation—not only to sustain current achievements, but also to serve as a catalyst for more aggressive efforts to combat smuggling along the border. 'Our objective is not merely to boost seizure statistics, but to safeguard the sovereignty, security and overall well-being of the Kelantan community,' he said. He emphasised the urgent need to leverage digital technology and artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance enforcement capabilities and operational efficiency, and also underscored the importance of discipline and integrity among enforcement personnel, describing them as the cornerstone of public trust in the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM).

Yong sues DAP, Roketkini over false image
Published on: Thursday, July 17, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 17, 2025 Text Size: (Left to right) Asraf, Stephan, Yong, Tungku Community Leader Datu Shuaib Mutalib and lawyer Yong Yit Jee. Kota Kinabalu: a media outlet affiliated with the Democratic Action Party (DAP), has removed an article published in 2013 that contained a misleading photo falsely attributed to the Lahad Datu incursion. However, it has now been confirmed that the image was, in fact, taken from an unrelated conflict in the southern Philippines. Advertisement The misrepresentation, critics argue, incited public fear and distorted the historical narrative of a critical national security event. The lawsuit, filed on 10 July 2025 by former Chief Minister Datuk Seri Yong Teck Lee, historian Stephan Gaimin, and activist Asraf Amir, names both DAP and as defendants. The plaintiffs claim the false image influenced both public perception and even academic publications concerning the 2013 Sabah crisis. A check of the original article link 'Hand the Lahad Datu incursion issue to the Ministry of Defence, not Wisma Putra – Kit Siang' now leads to a standard '404 – Page Not Found' error. Yong emphasized the seriousness of the misrepresentation which he said came without public apology, correction, or clarification. 'I decided on legal action because probably more people and organisations out there are mistaken in relying on the DAP propaganda mouthpiece, since DAP is a government party and the biggest party in Parliament. He further recounted seeing the same image misused during an international arbitration colloquium in 2023, and again in a university-published academic book, highlighting how far the false narrative had spread. While the image's removal is being acknowledged as a 'Round 1 victory', the plaintiffs assert that accountability is far from over. 'We demand a public apology from DAP for spreading fake news that not only misrepresented historical events but also led to widespread concern and fear within the community,' read the joint media statement. The group is also calling for a formal undertaking from DAP to prevent future dissemination of false or misleading content. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
