Inside Georgia football's backup quarterback situation
Georgia Bulldogs fans are very familiar with the importance of having a good backup quarterback. Last season, the Bulldogs won an SEC championship with Gunner Stockton coming in and playing well in the second half against Texas after Carson Beck suffered a serious elbow injury. In 2025, Georgia is expected to start redshirt junior Gunner Stockton. Georgia has almost no experience behind Stockton in the quarterback room. Stockton's projected backup, Ryan Puglisi, is a redshirt freshman, and has never appeared in a game for Georgia. Puglisi is a pocket passer and a former four-star recruit. Georgia coach Kirby Smart likes how Puglisi prepares, but if he has to play for an extended period of time, then that could spell trouble for Georgia. Puglisi has gotten a lot of practice reps this offseason and is expected to see his first game action early in the season against Marshall and/or Austin Peay. However, Puglisi still has a lot to learn. "He prepares really hard," Georgia coach Kirby Smart said on Puglisi. "He studies, he's smart, picks things up. He makes mistakes, we'll say I'll do, and he learns from them. He generally knows when he messed up, he's walking off the field in the scrimmage and didn't change the protection on the play that he knew he should have. "He knew it messed him up, but he knew it right away, which is different than where he was this time last year. He's still trying to figure that out. He makes some really good throws and he's more comfortable in the pocket than he's been. He understands things much better and he has a confidence about it that has helped." Puglisi looked solid in Georgia's G-Day spring game, especially with the first-team offense (three of three for 52 passing yards and a touchdown with the first-team offense). Puglisi has gotten a lot of reps and went 23 of 49 for 224 passing yards, two touchdowns and one interception in the spring game. He flashed a bit more mobility than we expected and rushed six times for 24 yards on G-Day. Beyond Puglisi are even larger unknowns. Georgia's third-string quarterback may actually be preferred walk-on Colter Ginn, who is only a redshirt freshman. Additionally, competing for the third-string role are true freshmen Ryan Montgomery (four-star) and Hezekiah Millender (three-star). Montgomery comes in as the No. 14 quarterback recruit in the nation, but he tore his ACL early into his senior year of high school. He lacks experience like the rest of Georgia's quarterback room outside of Gunner Stockton. "Yeah, mentally, he gets it, and he's very into the mental side of it," Smart said on Montgomery. "He throws a very catchable ball, a very accurate passer. A little overwhelmed at times and probably thinking too much in terms of, we give the quarterback a lot, and we give a freshman quarterback a lot, because it's a lot greater than what they're used to. But he's handled that volume well, and he does a good job processing information and taking coaching to the field, which is a good sign for a quarterback." Overall, Georgia's quarterback room lacks experience beyond Gunner Stockton. Georgia's lack of quarterback depth should make the Bulldogs hesitant to have designed runs for Stockton. Frankly we don't feel this team is capable of winning a national championship with a backup quarterback unlike some of the previous Georgia teams. This is not a good year for quarterback depth at Georgia, but Ryan Puglisi could fill in for a starter as a game or two and keep the team afloat. Georgia quarterback depth chart

Joel Klatt explains why he ranks Georgia football outside his top-5
Fox Sports college football expert Joel Klatt ranks the Georgia Bulldogs as the No. 7 team in his preseason top 25. Klatt has some concerns about the Bulldogs entering the 2025 season, but gives Georgia the benefit of the doubt over similar SEC teams like the LSU Tigers (No. 8) and Alabama Crimson Tide (No. 9). "I'll be honest, Gunner Stockton is a question mark for me, but Georgia is a program that has proven that it's like you don't have to have elite level quarterback play," Klatt said. "You got to have competent (QB) play." Klatt ranks Georgia behind No. 1 Penn State, No. 2 Texas, No. 3 Ohio State, No. 4 Clemson, No. 5 Oregon and No. 6 Notre Dame. Klatt is lower than most on Georgia. His ranking of the Bulldogs is lower than how college football coaches voted in the US LBM Coaches Poll, which ranked Georgia No. 4. "I trust Kirby Smart," Klatt added. "Why? Because they win. That's just what they do. There's never a shortage of talent at Georgia. We know that." Georgia will have to rely on younger players than usual in 2025. The Bulldogs had 14 players selected in the 2025 NFL draft including several key players in the trenches. Georgia also lost a few key veterans like quarterback Carson Beck and linebacker Damon Wilson to the transfer portal. However, Klatt does like how Georgia has improved its wide receiver room. "They've addressed the wide receiver issues, which let's be honest, like that was terrible last year," Klatt continued. "They led the country in drops. So they get Zachariah Branch from USC, Noah Thomas from (Texas A&M. That should help them right away. Branch is one of the most dynamic players in the country." Georgia's receivers need to help quarterback Gunner Stockton, who is entering his first year as the starter. However, Stockton is a redshirt junior and has been in Georgia's system for a long time, so he should be prepared to play. Additionally, the schedule sets up nicely for Stockton and company. "Here's the other thing I love about Georgia is their schedule," Klatt said. "Most of their big ones are at home. Alabama, Texas, and Ole Miss are all at home, where they never lose, by the way, between the hedges (Georgia had) 31 straight home wins. Their last home loss was in 2019." Georgia's start to the season is easy too. The Bulldogs don't have to go on the road or play a Power Four opponent until Week 3 against Tennessee. This should help Gunner Stockton adjust to starting. Georgia's advantageous schedule does not stop there. "They only play three true road games with that level of talent," Klatt said. "Listen, I know Kirby always complains about like it's tough to win on the road in the SEC. It's tough to win on the road, period. And guess what? You only have to do it three times this year." Georgia's three road games are against Tennessee, Auburn and Mississippi State. The Bulldogs are favored in all three games and have an easier path than last season to the SEC title game and the College Football Playoff. "Georgia's is a team that I think should play for an SEC championship," Klatt said. "Partly because the program that they've built and partly because in terms of SEC schedules, that's about as favorable as as you can get with that home denomination there." Klatt thinks Georgia will make the SEC championship, but he does not necessarily think the Bulldogs will win the SEC. Klatt likes Texas to win the SEC over Georgia. He has Texas as his preseason No. 2 and thinks Texas has one of the best defenses in the country. Follow UGAWire on Instagram or Threads for more Georgia football coverage!

Disappointed Ciraldo threatens to swing axe at Dogs
Cameron Ciraldo has threatened to swing the axe on hot-and-cold Canterbury, questioning some of his players' intensity and preparation on the run to the NRL finals. The Bulldogs' consistency from earlier in the season is eluding them at just the wrong time, with Friday's 32-12 loss to the Sydney Roosters their second in three games. Canterbury were first on the ladder for 13 consecutive weeks earlier in the year but are now in an uphill battle to secure a top-two finish with three games to go before finals. On Friday, Easts completely dominated the Bulldogs after half-time. Naufahu Whyte, notably, smashed past four Bulldogs defenders for one of the softer tries the league's best defensive side have conceded this year. "When the intensity went up, a few guys didn't want to go with it," said frustrated coach Ciraldo. In part, he blamed his own training practices for a drop in consistency. "We've had consistency for three quarters of the year. The last month has been disappointing," he said. "I sort of blame myself there because we've got some guys carrying niggles and they just get through training instead of actually training. "I'm going to stop that. If you can't train, it sort of results in a performance like that." Recruits Marcelo Montoya and Sitili Tupouniua are expected to recover from respective neck and hamstring injuries in the coming weeks. Back-up hooker Jake Turpin, utility Drew Hutchison and forwards Daniel Suluka-Fifita and Kurtis Morrin are among other proven first-graders currently out of the team. INTERCEPT 🙌 — NRL (@NRL) August 15, 2025 A rare bright moment for the Bulldogs at Allianz Stadium. Ciraldo warned there were plenty of candidates for game time if the rigours of the long season were weighing on incumbent players. "We've got a couple of guys available from injury possibly next week or the week after," Ciraldo said. "We've got a deep squad. We've got a lot of good players that didn't play tonight. If we don't want to prepare to win, then I'll put someone in who does want to prepare to win." The Bulldogs have one of the hardest fixture lists to finish the regular season as the only team playing three opponents that began round-24 in the top eight. Canterbury captain Stephen Crichton, a three-time premiership winner, said the timing was right for Ciraldo to call the Bulldogs out. "We're coming into the serious part of the year," he said. "If you don't get your mindset right coming into these big games, you're going to be sitting behind the posts most of the time (after conceding tries). "You'd rather have this conversation now than leading into finals."
