Inside Georgia football's backup quarterback situation
In 2025, Georgia is expected to start redshirt junior Gunner Stockton. Georgia has almost no experience behind Stockton in the quarterback room.
Stockton's projected backup, Ryan Puglisi, is a redshirt freshman, and has never appeared in a game for Georgia. Puglisi is a pocket passer and a former four-star recruit. Georgia coach Kirby Smart likes how Puglisi prepares, but if he has to play for an extended period of time, then that could spell trouble for Georgia. Puglisi has gotten a lot of practice reps this offseason and is expected to see his first game action early in the season against Marshall and/or Austin Peay. However, Puglisi still has a lot to learn.
"He prepares really hard," Georgia coach Kirby Smart said on Puglisi. "He studies, he's smart, picks things up. He makes mistakes, we'll say I'll do, and he learns from them. He generally knows when he messed up, he's walking off the field in the scrimmage and didn't change the protection on the play that he knew he should have.
"He knew it messed him up, but he knew it right away, which is different than where he was this time last year. He's still trying to figure that out. He makes some really good throws and he's more comfortable in the pocket than he's been. He understands things much better and he has a confidence about it that has helped."
Puglisi looked solid in Georgia's G-Day spring game, especially with the first-team offense (three of three for 52 passing yards and a touchdown with the first-team offense). Puglisi has gotten a lot of reps and went 23 of 49 for 224 passing yards, two touchdowns and one interception in the spring game. He flashed a bit more mobility than we expected and rushed six times for 24 yards on G-Day.
Beyond Puglisi are even larger unknowns. Georgia's third-string quarterback may actually be preferred walk-on Colter Ginn, who is only a redshirt freshman. Additionally, competing for the third-string role are true freshmen Ryan Montgomery (four-star) and Hezekiah Millender (three-star).
Montgomery comes in as the No. 14 quarterback recruit in the nation, but he tore his ACL early into his senior year of high school. He lacks experience like the rest of Georgia's quarterback room outside of Gunner Stockton.
"Yeah, mentally, he gets it, and he's very into the mental side of it," Smart said on Montgomery. "He throws a very catchable ball, a very accurate passer. A little overwhelmed at times and probably thinking too much in terms of, we give the quarterback a lot, and we give a freshman quarterback a lot, because it's a lot greater than what they're used to. But he's handled that volume well, and he does a good job processing information and taking coaching to the field, which is a good sign for a quarterback."
Overall, Georgia's quarterback room lacks experience beyond Gunner Stockton. Georgia's lack of quarterback depth should make the Bulldogs hesitant to have designed runs for Stockton. Frankly we don't feel this team is capable of winning a national championship with a backup quarterback unlike some of the previous Georgia teams. This is not a good year for quarterback depth at Georgia, but Ryan Puglisi could fill in for a starter as a game or two and keep the team afloat.

Julian Sayin named Ohio State's starting quarterback for season opener against Texas
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Julian Sayin will be Ohio State's starting quarterback when the No. 3 Buckeyes open the season against top-ranked Texas on Aug. 30, coach Ryan Day announced Monday. Day, who is in his seventh year leading the Buckeyes, said Sayin was more consistent in the competition with Lincoln Kienholz but there was some separation over the past week. 'It was a close competition. I think both guys we all feel confident can win a game for us. I feel like our guys are confident with both quarterbacks, I feel like we are going to need both quarterbacks,' Day said. 'Lincoln did a lot of great things, but we're going to name Julian the starter, give him the majority of the reps with the ones and go prepare to beat Texas.' Sayin is listed as a sophomore but has four years of eligibility remaining. He originally committed to Alabama as the top-rated quarterback in the Class of 2024 and was taking classes when Nick Saban retired. Sayin then entered the transfer portal last spring and came to Ohio State. He played in four games last season, including the College Football Playoff first-round game against Tennessee, and he was 5 for 12 for 84 yards and one touchdown while taking 27 snaps. 'I think earning trust is just all about consistency, who are you day in and day out, and are you making the routine plays routinely. Are you someone who the offense can count on and who your teammates can count on consistently?' Sayin said on Aug. 5 about his approach. Offensive coordinator Brian Hartline also pointed out Sayin's consistency, along with limited turnovers and emergence as a leader, in his body of work. 'The command and earning the respect of your peers. Ultimately, the locker room always knows,' Hartline said. Texas coach Steve Sarkisian tried to recruit Sayin and said after Monday's announcement that he had a ton of respect for him. 'We recruited him hard here. He was a very gifted passer, really good player. Came to camp with us, I think, two years in a row. So we got a lot of familiarity with him,' Sarkisian said. 'Very good player, elite passer, very good arm talent, very quick release, really accurate guy. Obviously, he's got great weapons around him, so he's the type of guy that can utilize those weapons in a good system. So, it poses a heck of a challenge.' Sayin won't be the most-hyped quarterback in the opener. That goes to Texas' Arch Manning, who is considered an early Heisman Trophy contender.

Auburn formally will retire QB Cam Newton's No. 2 jersey during game against Georgia
AUBURN, Ala. — Auburn will retire 2010 Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton's No. 2 jersey this fall, making him the fourth player in program history to receive the honor. The ceremony will take place during Auburn's home game against rival Georgia on Oct. 11. Newton will join Pat Sullivan (No. 7), Bo Jackson (No. 34) and Terry Beasley (No. 88) as former Tigers football players whose numbers are formally retired. The jerseys of Sullivan and Beasley were retired following Sullivan's 1971 Heisman Trophy season, and Jackson's number was retired as part of Auburn's football centennial celebration in 1992. No one has worn No. 2 at Auburn since Newton and the Tigers beat Oregon in the Bowl Championship Series national title game for the 2010 season. But soon it will be officially out of service. 'Auburn will always be home to me,' Newton said in a statement. 'The national championship we won in 2010 was a special moment, and to have my jersey retired ... is an incredible honor that I'll cherish forever. War Eagle!' One of the most decorated players in Auburn and Southeastern Conference history, Newton led Auburn to conference and national titles with a perfect 14-0 record. He threw for 2,854 yards and 30 touchdowns while rushing for 1,473 yards and 20 more scores. He became the first player in SEC history to pass for more than 2,000 yards and rush for more than 1,000 yards in a single season. 'Cam Newton not only led Auburn to a national championship in 2010, but he produced one of the most prolific seasons ever by a college football player,' Auburn athletic director John Cohen said. 'Retiring Cam's jersey number is a fitting way to celebrate his lasting impact on Auburn University and Auburn Athletics for all time.'
