17 dead in head-on collision between minibus taxi and truck in Zimbabwe, police say

Independent5 days ago
A head-on collision between a minibus taxi and a haulage truck killed 17 people in northeastern Zimbabwe on Tuesday police said.
Police spokesman Paul Nyathi said all 17 victims, including some pedestrians, died at the scene of the crash, which happened near Chitungwiza, a densely populated town about 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) southeast of the capital, Harare.
Nyathi said the truck veered into the opposite lane and collided with the minibus after the driver lost control. Before the impact, the truck struck two pedestrians walking on the 'island of the road,' he said.
Fifteen of the 17 passengers in the minibus died instantly, while others were injured and rushed to a hospital.
The state-run Herald newspaper reported that the minibus was 'completely flattened, with only fragments of its chassis visible from beneath the truck's undercarriage.'
Twisted metal, shattered glass and debris were strewn across the road as rescuers worked to retrieve trapped passengers, the newspaper said. The accident happened in the morning, but rescuers were still recovering bodies at noon, it reported.
Chitungwiza Mayor Rosaria Mangoma urged the government to declare the crash a national disaster, calling it 'one of the most disturbing and traumatic scenes' the town had witnessed.
Deadly road accidents involving public transportation are common in Zimbabwe, where speeding is widespread as drivers attempt to maximize daily trips. Poorly maintained roads add to the danger.
In February, 24 people were killed in a head-on collision between a bus and a truck near Beitbridge, on the border with South Africa.
Zimbabwe, with a population of about 15 million, records a road accident every 15 minutes, killing at least five people daily — one of the highest fatality rates in Africa, according to the national statistics agency.

Funfair owner insists ride was tested just hours before teen suffered life-changing injuries after ‘getting hair caught'

A FUNFAIR owner has insisted his ride was tested just hours before a teen was left with potentially life-changing injuries in a "freak accident." The horror at Netley Marsh Steam and Craft Show near Southampton, saw the teen's hair caught in a ride. Charles Cole, owner of the funfair, has now spoken out to say he sympathises with the 18-year-old. He called the horror a "freak accident" and went on to insist his ride is 20 years old but it "had been tested that day." The incident on Saturday prompted a large emergency response with the Health and Safety Executive becoming involved. An 18-year-old girl was left with serious head injuries when her hair was caught in a ride at the funfair, she was raced to hospital and treated by medics. The girl was taken away on a stretcher and fire crews reportedly had to cut away a section of the ride. Mr Cole said that the walk-on ride had been subject to daily checks. Speaking to the Daily Echo he added: "Approximately 50 people had been on the ride before the 18-year-old, and there were no issues. 'The ride is 20 years old but it had been tested that day. This was a freak accident. 'Somehow, the girl's hair got caught and she could not grab on to the handrails. "Nobody wants to hurt anyone, and we are a family business. Last night was very upsetting, especially for the man who owns the ride. 'Safety is our priority, and we sympathise with the girl and her parents. 'It is under investigation and the ride is closed.' The ride has now been closed for the duration of the event as the Health and Safety Executive probe the "freak accident." A full inspection of the site was carried out on Monday. A Hampshire Police spokesperson said: "We were called at 10.53pm on July 26 with reports that an 18-year-old woman had sustained potentially life-changing injuries to her head while on a ride at Netley Marsh Steam and Craft Show. "She was taken to hospital for treatment. " Police attended and have liaised with the Health and Safety Executive." Meanwhile, the fair announced today: "Good morning from day three of the show." 1

Shock details emerge about moments before Aussie plunged from his hotel room in Bali and suffered horrific spinal injuries

An Aussie who survived a horrific fall after plunging from the third floor of a Bali hotel had been in a heated argument with his girlfriend moments earlier. The 30-year-old man, identified by police as Dylan, fell from the balcony of his Ramada Encore Hotel room in Kuta at about 4.25am local time on Saturday. Dylan and his girlfriend are understood to have been engaged in a public argument in the lead-up to the fall. Local witness Made Suwitra claimed the pair were shouting in the hotel bar before they were asked to lower their voices so as not to disturb the other guests. The couple said 'no problem' and returned to their room on the third floor before another disturbance was reported by a hotel staff member. Dylan later fell from their balcony, landing on the rooftop of the housekeeping office that was on the floor below. The Aussie landed face down, injuring his tailbone. The hotel's on-call doctor decided it was not safe to bring him down without assistance, so they called local authorities for help. Footage from the incident showed emergency services carefully lowering the 30-year-old to the ground on a stretcher. Dylan was heard groaning in pain and saying 'I can't' and 'oh my god'. The Aussie was taken to BIMC Hospital in Kuta for further treatment. He did not suffer any life-threatening injuries. Denpasar Police spokesperson Ketut Sukadi said police have launched an investigation. Kuta has a controversial reputation among travel bloggers, as it has become known for 'over-tourism' along with its rowdy nightlife and heavily congested traffic. The district in the south of the capital, Denpasar, was rocked by a similar tragedy earlier this year. Melbourne woman Courtney Mills died after falling from her hotel balcony in Kuta. Ms Mills, a passionate DJ, was found lying on the side of the hotel's pool around 1am. Hotel staff had taken her to her room around an hour earlier. Her sister Kiani praised the DJ's 'sparkle' as she paid tribute following the tragic incident. 'Our hearts are shattered as we share the devastating news of the sudden passing of our beloved Courtney Mills, in Bali,' she wrote on Facebook. 'Courtney touched the hearts of everyone she met. Her light, sparkle, and spirit will forever remain with us.

Three killed and others seriously injured after train crash in southwestern Germany

Several people were killed when a passenger train derailed in southwestern Germany near the town of Biberach, close to the border with France, German media reported on Sunday, citing security sources. Police in Stuttgart, who were cited by media in initial reports of the crash, were not immediately available for comment. A picture published in German media showed carriages had left the tracks and rolled over. Federal police told dpa that the severity of the injuries was not immediately clear. Roughly 100 people were aboard the train when at least two carriages derailed in a forested area around 6:10 p.m. local time (1600 GMT), dpa reported. The crash happened near the town of Riedlingen, dpa reported, roughly 158 kilometers (98 miles) west of Munich. Reports say there had been a storm in the area shortly before. Storms passed through the area before the crash and investigators were seeking to determine if the rain was a factor. 'There have been heavy rains here, so it cannot be ruled out that the heavy rain and a related landslide accident may have been the cause. However, this is currently the subject of ongoing investigations," said Thomas Strobl, interior minister of the state of Baden-Württemberg . German chancellor Friedrich Merz said he was monitoring the situation. He wrote on X: 'The train accident in the Biberach district shocks me. I am in close contact with the Interior Minister and the Transport Minister and have asked them to support the rescue forces with all available means. We mourn the victims. I express my condolences to their relatives.'
