Tampa Bay Sun face in-state rivals in first-ever final

Axios17-06-2025
The Tampa Bay Sun will face off against Fort Lauderdale United in the inaugural USL Super League Championship final this weekend.
Why it matters: They are the first professional women's sports team from Tampa Bay to compete in a playoff game. This is also the first USL Super League final, and we're hosting it in Tampa.
Zoom in: The final is set for Saturday at 7:30pm at the Blake High School Riverfront Stadium. Tampa Bay has the most wins at home of any team in the USL Super League during the regular season.
There are still some tickets on sale, starting at $25. You can also watch the final on Peacock.
State of play: The Sun has met its in-state rival four times this season. The first three bouts ended in ties, while the Sun won in the last match.
The Sun earned the No. 2 seed in the USL Super League playoffs and notched a 2–1 win at home over Dallas Trinity in the semifinal. Fort Lauderdale United is the No. 4 seed.
What they're saying: " They're a team that is built for adversity. They have each other's back," Sun head coach Denise Schilte-Brown recently told the Tampa Bay Times. "They're super supportive, and they never give up."
"I think we've seen the best of them when we're behind a goal," she added.

Lakers jersey history No. 3 — Anthony Brown

Through the 2024-25 season, the Los Angeles Lakers have had a total of 506 players suit up for them, going back to their days in Minneapolis. Some were forgettable, some were serviceable, some were good and a select few were flat-out legendary. As the Lakers approach their 80th season of existence (they were founded back in 1946 as the Detroit Gems in the National Basketball League), LeBron Wire is taking a look at each player who has worn their jersey, whether it has been a purple and gold one or the ones they donned back in the Midwest during their early years. In this article, we take a look at Anthony Brown, a forward who once had a brief stint with the Lakers. A native of Southern California, Brown headed up north to play for Stanford University after leading Ocean View High School in Huntington Beach to a CIF Southern Section championship. In his fifth year with the Cardinal, he averaged 14.8 points and 6.9 rebounds a game. The Lakers took him in the second round of the 2015 NBA Draft. He appeared in 29 games with them during the 2015-16 season and averaged 4.0 points and 2.4 rebounds in 20.7 minutes a game. Brown stuck around in the NBA for two more seasons and played for the New Orleans Pelicans, Orlando Magic and Minnesota Timberwolves. He would go on to have numerous short stints with pro basketball teams overseas, and in July, he signed with Beşiktaş Gain, a pro team in Turkey.

Eagles GM reveals how AJ Brown trade nearly fell apart during 2022 NFL Draft

The Philadelphia Eagles enter the 2025 NFL season as the favorites to take home another championship after winning Super Bowl 59 in dominant fashion last season. Philadelphia fielded one of the best offenses in the NFL last season thanks to stars like running back Saquon Barkley, offensive tackles Jordan Mailata and Lane Johnson, quarterback Jalen Hurts and wide receivers A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith. Only two of those players were not drafted by the Eagles: Barkley, a free agent acquisition last offseason, and Brown, who Philadelphia acquired via trade during the 2022 NFL Draft. Turns out, Philadelphia's trade for Brown was minutes away from falling through on draft night. Eagles general manager Howie Roseman revealed on an episode of the "Bussin' With The Boys" podcast that he was down to the wire on getting a deal done for the wide receiver during the draft. Roseman and Jon Robinson, the Tennessee Titans' general manager at the time, had a deal in place the morning of the draft for the Eagles to acquire Brown. The only issue was finalizing a new contract for the wide receiver. "We had to get a contract done with him," Roseman explained. "I said, 'Jon, if we can't get a contract done, we can't do this trade. We can't trade you a [first-round pick] and a [third-round pick] for one year of a player. We got to get a contract done first.'" Howie Roseman breaks down the inner workings behind the blockbuster AJ Brown trade Philadelphia held the No. 12 and No. 18 overall picks in the first round of that draft and were planning to send No. 18 to Tennessee for Brown. At No. 12, they picked Jordan Davis but still didn't have a contract in place for the wide receiver, causing Robinson to pressure Roseman about what was happening. "Jon's like, 'what are we doing? What's going on here?'" Roseman said. "Between [picks] 12 and 18, I'm trying to finish the contract." This deal was kept secret from many Eagles' front office members even as the first round of the draft went on. "Nobody knew except a couple of people that we were even doing it because I said, 'imagine if this falls apart,'" Roseman said. "Like, I'm going to be the GM who can't get a deal done with AJ. ... When we finished it, it was about pick 14." Roseman decided to break the news to the rest of the draft war room. "I'm just going to say, 'hey guys, we're picking AJ Brown," he said. "And they're all going to look at me like, 'what the (expletive) is going on?' But they're going to be excited as (expletive). And so it was really fun, it was really great energy." Brown was a second-team All-Pro in his first year with Philadelphia as the Eagles made a run to Super Bowl 57. He was a second-team All-Pro in 2023 and 2024 as well and had five catches for 43 yards and a touchdown in Super Bowl 59. AJ Brown trade details Philadelphia ended up trading the No. 18 and No. 101 overall picks to Tennessee for Brown. The Eagles immediately signed him to a four-year, $100 million contract. Tennessee selected wide receiver Treylon Burks at No. 18 overall and packaged the No. 101 pick in a deal to send the New York Jets the No. 26 overall pick. Here's who they selected with the picks they received from New York: McCreary and Burks are the only players still on the Titans' roster ahead of the 2025 season. Robinson was fired during the 2022 NFL season. Then-Titans coach Mike Vrabel disagreed on this trade as well as a later trade for wide receiver Julio Jones, leading to his firing.

Sun's Marina Mabrey breaks silence on viral Caitlin Clark altercation

The post Sun's Marina Mabrey breaks silence on viral Caitlin Clark altercation appeared first on ClutchPoints. Connecticut Sun guard Marina Mabrey admits she overreacted when she shoved the Indiana Fever's Caitlin Clark during an altercation between the two teams in June. 'It wasn't like 'I hate her, here I go,'' she told Sportskeeda's Mark Medina. The incident occurred after Jacy Sheldon, then playing for the Sun, inadvertently poked Clark in the eye, then bumped into her after the whistle. Clark bumped her back, causing Mabrey to come in and knock Clark to the ground. Mabrey was initially given a technical foul for the play, but it was upgraded to a flagrant 2 after-the-fact. She said she believed that happened because of the outcry from Clark's fanbase. 'I thought it only got upgraded to a flagrant 2 because of the way the fans reacted to it,' Mabrey said. 'They gave me a tech for it. I don't care, honestly. I really don't. Obviously, I'm not trying to hurt anybody. I'm not trying to go after certain players for certain s–t.' She also pointed to a play from last year when Clark shoved her to the ground in a scuffle for the ball. 'Me and Caitlin were cool,' Mabrey added. 'Me and Caitlin have competed against each other in the playoffs. She threw me into the benches in the quarterfinals. We didn't go after her for it. She's competitive, and I was about to get the ball. I get it. Throw me out of bounds. We got back up and kept competing.' 'So at the end of the day, it was a play on the ball when she did it,' she continued. 'And I probably overreacted a little bit. But my teammate is getting hit, and I'm not okay with that.' Mabrey and the Sun are currently in the midst of a league-worst 5-26 season. The Fever, meanwhile, won the Commissioner's Cup, but have been playing without Clark, who is recovering from a groin injury. They come into Tuesday at 18-14, good for a tie for fifth in the WNBA.
