Five years of Netflix's 'Bulbbul': Ahead of Kajol's 'Maa', revisiting the atmospheric thriller with a luminous cast of Triptii Dimri, Rahul Bose, Avinash Tiwary
Netflix's 'Bulbbul' that was produced by Clean Slate Films (Anushka Sharma and Karnesh Sharma), completes five years today. The Hindi film landscape is currently flooded with horror stories laced with chaos and comedy. It all began with the clutter-breaking Stree and went till the record-breaking Stree 2.
Between 2018 and 2024, we saw horror-comedies like Bhediya, Kapkappi, The Bhootnii, and many more. Most of them failed to scare us or laugh. But in between, there came Bulbbul that went beyond and subverted the genre and broke the cliches we usually witness in titles of such nature. It's a film about love, loneliness, longing, witches, and everything else in between.
STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD
The frames were luminous and so was the ensemble. Triptii Dimri, Rahul Bose, Avinash Tiwary immersed themselves into their characters and made them their own. Dimri was gorgeous from the first scene to the last. Tiwary was stunning and Bose was bone-chilling.
Though Triptii Dimri became a face with Animal, she found Bulbbul to be more challenging than the action drama. With a film that was not everyday cinema, Triptii Dimri portrayed the emotional complexities of loss of love, life, and also pulled off scenes by showing the destructive power of female rage. She shared the screen space with the known actor, Rahul Bose, and had earlier revealed that she couldn't have asked for a nicer co-star.
Triptii pulled off a role that showcased her transformation from a naïve girl to a fearless woman. Demonstrating her acting range to the fullest, Triptii picked up a layered role that was mentally exhausting and at times, she found herself getting tired of physically essaying it. Despite this, the role turned out to be rewarding for her.
The actress counts on Bulbbul as a huge learning experience, and shares that there was always something new for her to learn as an actor and as a human being.

‘Wednesday' Season 2 Part 1 review: Jenna Ortega's return to Nevermore is promising, but lacks bite
Netflix's Wednesdayhas always had its task cut out. Coming on the back of several notable adaptations portraying the spook-embracing Addams Family, Wednesday created waves with its first season by increasing focus on the fan-favourite Wednesday Addams, isolating her away from the celebrated family, and placing her in an institution with other teenage 'outcasts'. More mysterious and dramatic than the humorous legacy of The Addams Family, Wednesday's first season found success in its teen-centred approach. Now, three years later, it returns with a second season (well, only half of it for now), and finds itself maybe haunted by expectations. It handles this pressure by reaching out in several directions. The second season, helmed by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, doubles down on its teenage murder mystery hook that worked well the first time around, while also bringing the Addamses together in hopes of sparking the nostalgic joy that shot this family to fame in the first place. Stilted in some aspects, while making strides in others, the first half of the second season comes across as a mixed bag. Quickly catching us up on the summer Wednesday (Jenna Ortega) had, in which she honed her psychic abilities and took down a serial killer in Kansas, the show drops the deadpan teen back at the Nevermore Academy — a school she ended up saving from supernatural destruction. Not only is Wednesday plagued by the popularity that comes with being a local hero, but she must also brace for her family being a part of her life at Nevermore this year. Add to this the suspiciously friendly new principal, Barry Dort (Steve Buscemi), and Wednesday's latest psychic vision of her friend Enid (Emma Myers) being harmed, and you have all the trappings to a woeful start to a new year at Nevermore. However, Wednesday is quick to gain a pesky stalker, and a murderous trail in the neighbouring town of Jericho, so not all hope is lost as the teen looks forward to yet another macabre fall. Wednesday Season 2, Part 1 (English) Creators: Alfred Gough, Miles Millar Cast: Jenna Ortega, Emma Myers, Steve Buscemi, Isaac Ordonez, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Thandiwe Newton, Fred Armisen, Luis Guzmán, and others Episodes: 4 Runtime: 45 mins - 1 hour Storyline: Wednesday returns to Nevermore Academy this season, with more murders to solve and some family drama to unravel. There is also the infusion of new cast members, with Billie Piper singing her way into becoming a prodigious music teacher, and Christopher Lloyd as a Professor who exists as a disembodied head. Thandiwe Newton plays a psychiatrist working at the Willow Hill asylum, where we find ourselves face to face with the previous season's monsters and this season's inmates — Tyler Galpin aka the Hyde (Hunter Doohan) and his master Laurel Gates (Christina Ricci). It is a full house and full season at Nevermore this year, with more to come, including a guest appearance by Lady Gaga. Jenna Ortega, with her signature steely gaze, leads another season of good performances. Yet, it leaves some things to be desired this time around. While the murderous mysteries that Wednesday tasks herself to solve play out, the season's more arresting moments come in the form of her interactions with her mother. Catherine Zeta-Jones returns as a concerned Morticia who, this time around, seeks to look out for her daughter. Finding itself in the crosshairs of a falling out between a teenage daughter who wants to find herself away from her mother's shadow and her mother, who refuses to back down, is an unexpected and welcome change that the narrative takes. It lends new, interesting layers to not only Wednesday, but also the Addams family, whose dynamic so far had existed in a more humorous tone. Morticia also faces her own mother this season, with Joanna Lumley playing a scheming Grandma Frump. The show's plot, however, struggles a bit to marry the ambitious contrasting tones it takes up, and in the process leaves behind other relations and dynamics, including the fan favourite Enid and Wednesday, to operate on autopilot. However, all the critiques stand on unsure ground in light of Netflix's decision to divide the release into two parts. With a mid-season cliffhanger that will only be resolved a month from now, one can't help but wonder whether the show was written in a way to take a break after four episodes, or the streamer just chopped it abruptly in half. Both seem possible, but neither satisfies the audience. Much more will be resolved next month, and hopefully the show finds a more compelling rhythm to resolve it all. The first four episodes of Wednesday Season 2 are available for streaming on Netflix

Gandhi is our The Crown, says producer Sameer Nair: 'Richard Attenborough made it via a narrow lens'
Gandhi, the upcoming series directed by Hansal Mehta, will follow India's struggle for independence while providing an in-depth portrayal of Mahatma Gandhi at different stages in his life, says producer Sameer Nair, comparing the show's narrative depth to the acclaimed international series The Crown. Gandhi stars Pratik Gandhi in the titular role. Starring Pratik Gandhi in the titular role, the series promises an exploration of Gandhi's life and the diverse characters who shaped India's fight for freedom. Nair, the managing director of Applause Entertainment, said while Gandhi is a globally recognised figure, the show seeks to present a 'deeply personal story' that goes beyond his iconic status. 'When (Richard) Attenborough made Gandhi, he had only two and a half hours to make it, and he ended up making a story about Gandhi via a narrow lens. What we are hoping to do with this is to also tell the story of Indian independence, and there are so many other characters involved. Nair said they are planning to make the show into three seasons. "It's not just Gandhi, it's also about people who are with him, who were against him, the British and the whole situation. So, these three seasons are more like our The Crown (Netflix's hit show on the British royal family),' Nair told PTI in an interview. Mehta has enjoyed great success in the streaming space with critically-acclaimed shows such as Scam and Scoop, and Nair hopes Gandhi would turn out to be a show that the whole world watches. Gandhi will have its world premiere at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in September. The banner is known for shows such as Vikramaditya Motwane's Black Warrant, Nagesh Kukunoor's The Hunt: The Rajiv Gandhi Assassination, Hansal Mehta's Scam 1992, and Pankaj Tripathi-starrer Criminal Justice among others. Gandhi is based on renowned historian and author Ramachandra Guha's books – Gandhi Before India and Gandhi: The Years That Changed the World. The show will also feature Pratik Gandhi's wife Bhamini Oza as Kasturba Gandhi and Harry Potter star Tom Felton as Josiah Oldfield Nair informed that through three seasons they hope to track Gandhi's journey from 1888 through 1947. The first season is dedicated to the years 1888 to 1915, while subsequent seasons will cover 1915 to 1932 and finally, 1932 to 1947, he said. 'Gandhi is going to be a big one, and now it's ready. Hansal is there, Pratik is playing the role, and AR Rahman is doing the music. So, it's all come together quite well. Hopefully, that should be ready by the end of August. "Then we'll take it out there and see how to put it out. But that will be a big one. Season one is about the younger Gandhi that you don't know about, it's a young adult story, we call season one Mohan to Mahatma." Nair said the first season is about an 18-year-old who goes to London to study law. "So, it's not the Mahatma you see on the currency note or the person that we all know about. It's a different guy, and how he becomes that (Mahatma). So, it's very fascinating,' Nair added. Nair said they are hoping to release the first season of the show in India by December-end. 'It is quite an expensive project. It's not easy to do this. We've taken some time writing it because you are writing about extremely famous and large public figures, and it needs to be done (right). "We tell human stories. We take the camera very close to the people and we try to tell human stories. So it's not about the great, it's about the people, and how they became great,' he said, adding that they haven't shot for the subsequent seasons of Gandhi yet.
