US tariffs will have least impact on India, says BJP

Time of India6 hours ago
New Delhi:
BJP
on Tuesday emphasised that there will be minimal impact of the high tariffs imposed by the US on the
Indian economy
as it is largely domestic consumer driven.
"Many kinds of talks are happening regarding tariffs, and it is being said that this will ruin the country's economy. But the truth is that the impact of tariffs on India will be the least, the reason being that
domestic consumption
contributes about 58% to India's GDP," BJP spokesman
Syed Zafar Islam
told media persons at a press briefing at the party office in New Delhi.
Islam said the
Modi government
has taken steps such as rationalisation in GST, reduction in interest rates, and relief in income-tax to the middle class.

"These measures have provided the economy with an additional stimulus of about 100 basis points. That is why, whatever external impact there may be, the pace of India's economy will not stop, rather it will accelerate further," he said.
Islam
emphasised that India's economy is not export-driven, unlike Indonesia, Malaysia, or Singapore.
Taking a jibe on Congress leader
Rahul Gandhi
's 'dead economy' remark, Islam said Gandhi has not understood this fact and should know that the economy is strong. Talking about the recently announced
GST reforms
, Islam said this will benefit people and further accelerate the country's economy.

‘Successful strikes, not Mr Trump...': Shashi Tharoor backs India's stance on truce with Pakistan

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Tuesday heaped praise on Operation Sindoor, India's military move against terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, saying the operation sent a clear message that "we will not sit quietly of terror is unleashed on us". New Delhi: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor during the Monsoon session of Parliament, in New Delhi, Monday, Aug. 18, 2025. (PTI Photo/Ravi Choudhary) (PTI08_18_2025_000222B)(PTI) He also backed India's stance on the cessation of hostilities with Pakistan in May following days of a military conflict, and said that it was India's successful strikes "and not Mr Trump", that led Pakistan to appeal for a truce with India. In his address during the book launch of 'Whither India-Pakistan Relations Today? Can They Ever Be Good Neighbours?', Tharoor said, "The successful strikes on the night of 9-10 May and the ability of India to intercept the attempted Pakistani response, when they sent missiles to Delhi on the morning of 10th May, is what contributed undoubtedly, and not Mr Trump, to the call by the Pakistani DGMO to his Indian counterpart asking for peace." India and Pakistan declared a ceasefire on May 10, days after India launched Operation Sindoor, following a call by Pakistan's Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) to his Indian counterpart. However, US President Donald Trump has since claimed on many occasions that is was upon his mediation that India and Pakistan reached a ceasefire agreement, and that he stopped a "nuclear war". His claims have time and again been refuted by New Delhi, asserting that the truce was reached bilaterally. However, the Congress has often questioned the government over Trump's claims. Most recently, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi raked up the issue in Parliament seeking clarity on the US President's claims. The Congress leader dared Prime Minister Narendra Modi to directly confront Trump's claims, and said, 'If he has the courage, he will say here that Donald Trump is a liar. 50% Indira Gandhi ka courage hai toh ye bol dega,' Rahul Gandhi said in a dare of sorts to PM Modi and then went on to fix his reference to the prime minister saying, "bol denge, sorry'.

Congress, BJP spar over Himcare scheme

Commotion and uproar was witnessed during the ongoing Monsoon session of Himachal Pradesh assembly on Tuesday as Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu led Congress government and main opposition party Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spar over HIMCARE scheme. (HT Photo) The Mukhya Mantri Himachal Health Care Scheme (HIMCARE) is a health insurance scheme in Himachal Pradesh that provides cashless treatment coverage of up to ₹5 lakh per year per family. Lashing out at BJP on the issue of the Himcare health scheme, the chief minister accused the previous BJP government of misusing public money. 'The BJP misused Himcare funds, squandered them on private hospitals, and created irregularities in billing. We have already released ₹550 crore for the scheme and will ensure that poor and needy patients get treatment,' Sukhu said while speaking in the house in response to the question of BJP MLA from Nachan in Mandi district, Vinod Kumar. Dissatisfied with the government's reply on the Himcare scheme in the state Assembly on Tuesday, the Opposition staged a noisy protest and left the house, accusing the Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu-led Congress government of ruining the free healthcare facility started by the previous BJP regime. The uproar began during the Question Hour when BJP MLA Vinod Kumar raised the issue, alleging that under the Himcare scheme, people were not receiving treatment benefits in hospitals and were being forced to mortgage their valuables to pay for medical expenses. 'When questions are asked, the government says the scheme is running, but the reality in hospitals is completely different,' he charged. Responding to the allegations, Health Minister Dhaniram Shandil said that the scheme was burdened with pending liabilities of ₹364 crore. As the chief minister stood to speak about prevailing corruption in the Himcare scheme during the previous BJP government led by Jai Ram Thakur, the BJP MLAs amid loud sloganeering moved out of the house. 'Large-scale irregularities were seen in the scheme and the present government was trying to rectify,' said Chief Minister while adding 'The scheme was marred with corruption and Himcare is very much in operation in the state. We have started mapping and we are improving the same.' While speaking to the media persons outside the assembly, Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur accused the government of shutting down free treatment for the poor. 'The government has ended free healthcare for the poor. People are being forced to mortgage their jewellery to get treatment. When this issue was raised in the Assembly, the ministers and even the Chief Minister laughed. I have never witnessed such inhuman behaviour. Health and education in the state have sunk to the lowest level ever,' Thakur said.
