PBB Belia Piasau seeks public apology from Nurul Izzah on NCR remarks
SIBU (June 28): The Protem Youth Movement of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Belia N.73 Piasau branch has called on Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) deputy president Nurul Izzah Anwar to issue a public apology following her recent statements concerning Native Customary Rights (NCR) land in Sarawak.
Its chairman, Mohammad Aniq Ashwin Abuzar, said Nurul Izzah's remarks misrepresented legal and policy realities surrounding NCR land, potentially undermining public trust and inciting unnecessary tensions.
'We are compelled to respond firmly and responsibly, given the sensitivities and historical importance of this issue to our indigenous communities,' he said in a statement.
Mohammad Aniq stressed that as a prominent leader within the Unity Government, Nurul Izzah bears the duty to speak on national matters with accuracy, maturity, and a firm grasp of the facts — particularly on complex and sensitive matters such as land rights in Sarawak.
'We urge her to refrain from making uninformed remarks and to engage constructively with the Sarawak government and native community leaders before commenting on our internal affairs,' he added.
In a recent Free Malaysia Today report, Nurul Izzah had called for the expedition of land surveys and ownership approvals for native customary land in Sarawak, and a halt to the issuance of new licences on disputed land.
In view of this, Mohammad Aniq noted that Sarawak's legal and administrative approach to NCR land is grounded in law and upheld by the courts.
'The Sarawak Land Code (Cap. 81) recognises native rights including 'temuda' (cultivated land), 'pulau galau' (communal forest), and 'pemakai menua' (territorial domain) under specific conditions,' he said.
'As of 2024, over 1.5 million hectares of land in Sarawak have been identified or gazetted as NCR land under various categories. This process is overseen by native land registries and involves ground verification, community consultation, and legal scrutiny.
'We, therefore, demand a formal public apology from Nurul Izzah to the Sarawak Premier and the people of Sarawak for her misleading statements,' he added.
Mohammad Aniq also noted that this was not the first instance of Nurul Izzah disregarding Sarawak's autonomy and sensitivities.
He recalled that in December 2015, she was barred from entering Sarawak following public conduct that contravened the state's interest and legal process.
'Given her recent behaviour, PBB Belia Piasau proposes that an indefinite entry ban be placed on Nurul Izzah until she issues a public apology acknowledging her misstatement.
'Among others, she is to commit to a fact-finding mission in Sarawak, guided by native leaders, legal experts, and state agencies.
'Additionally, she must demonstrate respect for Sarawak's legal framework, policies, and cultural context,' he said, adding that this is not a political retaliation but a necessary safeguard for Sarawak's dignity, public trust, and internal harmony.

The proposal was shared during a courtesy call by the Sarawak Students Association in United Kingdom at the Astana Negeri in Petra Jaya yesterday. Also present was Wan Junaidi's wife Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi. In a Facebook post after the visit, Wan Junaidi emphasised that Sarawak's distinctive legal framework, including native customary rights (NCR) to land, requires practitioners who understand its intricacies. He expressed hope that a locally-rooted law faculty would produce legal experts who are not only academically trained but also deeply familiar with Sarawak's constitutional and legislative context. He also highlighted the importance of grasping key national documents such as the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), the Federal Constitution, and the Sarawak State Constitution, alongside the responsibilities of the Yang di-Pertua Negeri. He urged the students, particularly those pursuing legal training, to seek hands-on exposure through court visits and to avoid shortcuts in building their careers. He encouraged students to return home after their studies and contribute towards Sarawak's development, echoing the state government's commitment to creating job opportunities and nurturing homegrown talent. Both Wan Junaidi and Fauziah conveyed their appreciation for the students' visit and extended well-wishes for their future success. law faculty lead local universities Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar

Nurul Izzah pays tribute to Bangladesh's July Revolution at Dhaka conference
NEW DELHI: Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) deputy president Nurul Izzah Anwar on Sunday paid tribute to the 2024 student-led uprising in Bangladesh as a quest for sovereignty and dignity. Bangladesh is holding a series of events to mark the first anniversary of the fall of Sheikh Hasina's nearly 16-year rule as a result of what has become known as the July Revolution. She said the events of last year were not just a protest but became an avenue for the rebirth of the nation's spirit. "At the end of the day, any regime, no matter how powerful, cannot stand against the will of an awakened people," Nurul Izzah said. Hasina resigned and fled to India on August 5 as protests mounted against her rule across Bangladesh. Nurul Izzah said the July Revolution is a reminder that "stability without justice is fragile." She also referred to the ongoing genocide by Israel in Gaza in her speech, which covered wide-ranging topics such as democratic and political reforms, her own struggles, youth activism and economic empowerment. Nurul Izzah said the "enabling of the genocidal onslaught in Gaza by the hegemons and their ilk reminds us of the need to reaffirm our solidarity." She spoke alongside international and Bangladeshi speakers at the first International Conference on the July Revolution, organised by the Dhaka-based think tank Research and Integrated Thought (RIT) and Dhaka University's Department of Political Science. Yasin Aktay, a senior member of Turkiye's Justice and Development Party (AK Party), hailed the July Revolution as an event that represented an uprising against local authoritarianism and its foreign backers. The Bangladesh interim government's housing and public works adviser Adilur Rahman Khan said the deposed Hasina regime had made the state machinery a weapon of her Awami League party, and enforced disappearances and killings of dissidents became routine. – Bernama

Nurul Izzah Calls On Bangladesh Interim Government Chief
WORLD By Shakir Husain NEW DELHI, July 27 (Bernama) -- Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) deputy president Nurul Izzah Anwar called on Bangladesh interim leader Muhammad Yunus in Dhaka on Sunday. Yunus, during the meeting, sought Malaysia's support for Bangladesh to join the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). "We want to become a part of ASEAN, and we will need your support," he told Nurul Izzah, according to a Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha report. Bangladesh applied to become an ASEAN sectoral dialogue partner in 2020. Yunus also invited Malaysian companies to invest in Bangladesh's growing economy. "Asia is ageing rapidly, but Bangladesh has a lot of young people. Half of our population is under the age of 27. Set up your industries here and export from Bangladesh. It will help both our economies," he said. The interim government's chief advisor informed the PKR deputy chief about Bangladesh's political reforms following last year's uprising, which ended Sheikh Hasina's nearly 16-year rule. Nurul Izzah spoke at Dhaka University on Sunday at a conference marking the first anniversary of the July Revolution.
