KSPCB chooses ‘End Plastic Pollution' as Environment Day theme
The Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) has chosen 'End Plastic Pollution' as the theme of World Environment Day which will be celebrated on June 5.
KSPCB Chairman P.M. Narendraswamy on Thursday said that various events will be held in Bengaluru to mark the day, including a mass tree plantation drive, photo contest, green selfie challenge, online quiz contest, graffiti contest, walkathon and cyclothon.
Exhibitions on sustainable product demonstration, green energy demonstration, showcase of startups in new technologies, carbon credit for farmers concept promotion, e-waste recycling programme, and documentary screening of Environment related progrmmes will also be held.
He added that an environment awareness campaign, street play, carbon footprint awareness, carbon footprint audit for organisations and waste audit awareness would also be organised on the occasion.
An environmental walk will also be organised in front of the steps on the entrance of the Vidhana Soudha, and around 3,000 people, including ministers, dignitaries, officers, Scouts and Guides, and NCC Cadets, will participate in the celebrations to spread environmental concerns.
Mr. Narendraswamy said Chief Minister Siddaramiah will hand over the Karnataka State Environment Awards to individuals and organisations who have rendered significant services in the field of environment protection.
He said that ₹50 lakh would be provided to producing or making environment related films.
He added that KSPCB has proposed installing Reverse Vending Machines (RVM) in local civic bodies to recycle plastic bottles.
'When plastic bottles are inserted into the RVM kiosks they will be crushed and in turn it will reward ₹ 1 to the person depositing the plastic bottle. By this way we can keep our cities clean, recycle the plastic and the person who deposits the bottle will also get a reward,' he added.
S.S. Lingaraja, member secretary, KSPCB said about 1,65,000 checks have been conducted across the state in the last three years, during which around 1,012 tonnes of banned plastics have been seized and a fine of ₹5.6 crore has been collected.

Seed ball dispersal drive held in Udupi
Udupi: The Eco Club of Mahatma Gandhi Memorial College, in collaboration with the Karnataka forest department, Adi Udupi, and the Manipal Birding and Conservation Trust, organised a seed ball dispersal drive to mark World Environment Day . As part of the initiative, seed balls were prepared by the Eco Club students by combining red soil, vermicompost, and coco peat. Seeds of native tree species such as jackfruit, mango, Pterocarpus marsupium (Honne), Syzygium cumini (Nerale), and Terminalia bellerica (Taare), known to flourish in the local ecosystem, were selected to ensure better germination and long-term growth. The drive was inaugurated with an address by Shivanand, deputy range forest officer (DRFO), who stressed the importance of reforestation and the role of seed balls in enhancing biodiversity and sustaining the environment. He also stressed the need for community-driven conservation efforts. Guided by forest department officials, Eco Club students dispersed approximately 870 seed balls in selected areas of Badagubettu Reserve Forest to enhance the chances of natural regeneration. In addition to the seed balls, saplings provided by the forest department were also planted. Prof Vanitha Mayya, Principal of MGM College, extended her support to the programme. Maneetha TK, convenor of the Eco Club; Thejasvi Acharya, managing trustee of the Manipal Birding and Conservation Trust; and beat forest officers Devaraj Pana, Shrinivas Jogi, and Sowmya were present. Students who participated in the drive later shared their experiences of contributing to this green initiative.

Women's police station gets a new look in just 69 days
Doddaballapur: Once functioning out of a cramped police quarters building originally meant for a single family, the women's police station of Bengaluru Rural district has now un-dergone a remarkable transformation. In just 69 days, the station has been fully renovated and was officially inaugurated on Thursday. Located within the premises of the Doddaballapur rural police station, the women's police station was previously operating out of a small residential unit — a setup that significantly affected police operations. There was limited space for receiving com-plaints, conducting counselling sessions, and interrogating suspects, which ham-pered the station's efficiency. The transformation began after Inspector M.B. Naveen Kumar took charge on March 13. With a vision to improve the work environment and public service, he initiated the renovation work by March 29. He was supported by police personnel Lokesh, Hev, and Sunil Godrale. The project was made possible through CSR funds and contributions from donors, resulting in a completely renovated station within just over two months. Remarkably, a legal aid and counselling centre was also estab-lished within just 7 days. On the occasion of World Environment Day, Bengaluru Rural SP C.K. Baba inau-gurated the newly renovated station. Speaking to the media, he praised Inspector Naveen Kumar and his team for their dedication and efficient execution of the ren-ovation. 'They have not only renovated the station but also set up a special legal support centre. I extend my congratulations to them,' he said. SP Baba further shared plans for additional facilities to better serve the public, in-cluding setting up a library and a dedicated playroom for children visiting the station with their families.

HPCL Visakh Refinery exhorts people to do their part to save planet
Visakhapatnam: As part of World Environment Day celebrations at HPCL – Visakh Re-finery, a valedictory function was organised in the refinery. In his address, executive director (I/C) – Visakh Refinery R Ramakrish-nan stressed the importance of environmental protection and respon-sibility of individuals. While explaining this year's theme focusing on 'beat plastic pollution', he cited how each individual can contribute to reducing plastic pollution by using biodegradable materials in place of single-use plastic. Later, the World Environment Day pledge was administered to the employees by Abhishek Trivedi ED-VRMP, Ramesh Krishnan ED-Operations and Commissioning and B Ravi HoD- Technical. Prizes were given away to winners of various competitions like slogan, online quiz, poetry, photography, painting and memes. Street plays were organised in residential areas at Sriharipuram and Malkapuram. The refinery created awareness on the ill-effects of plastic pollution and biodegradable alternatives to plastic pollution among contract workers. Cloth bags and saplings of different varieties were distribut-ed to people. G Bhagavan, GM-Technical, briefed about several activities carried out by the refinery. Refinery employees, their family members, chil-dren and winners of various competitions attended.
