Gary Lineker left the BBC with no choice as he finally reaches full time
Following his retirement after a distinguished playing career, Lineker joined BBC Radio 5 Live as a football pundit before becoming a team captain on the sports game show They Think It's All Over from 1995 to 2003. The quiz in many ways helped him to have a more relaxed persona on screen, having initially seemed a little wooden in front of camera at times.
In 1997 he took over as host of Grandstand and when then-presenter Desmond Lynam was at Aintree for the Grand National which was abandoned due to a bomb alert. Lineker had hours to fill and learn to front live TV on the job.
Speaking last month about it Lineker said: 'I was thrust in there, just one camera, no autocue, or anything. It wasn't great, but actually it wasn't that bad either. But I tell you it was quite an experience, that was actually a defining experience because I thought if I can cope with this, than I can cope because you can't get anything more difficult than that.'
After honing his skills he replaced Lynam as presenter of the BBC's flagship football highlights programme Match Of The Day in 1999, when Lynam defected to rival ITV.
Lineker would later become the corporation's highest-paid presenter, with the BBC's latest annual report showing his salary to be to around £1.35 million a year.
All the while he was also advertising Walkers Crisps, made in his hometown of Leicester. The partnership was so strong they would rename a flavour Salt and Lineker in the Nineties.
Lineker also presented Match Of The Day in his boxer shorts in 2016 after losing a bet which saw Leicester win the Premier league.
But his relaxed and jokey manner then began to show cracks in the last few years as he was hit by a string of controversies.
He was temporarily suspended from the BBC in March 2023 after an impartiality row over comments he made criticising the then-government's new asylum policy on social media. Pundits refused to go on the show without him and he was reinstated. The BBC then issued new rules about twitter.
In November 2024 he announced he would be stepping down from presenting Match Of The Day at the end of the season, but would still host World Cup and FA Cup coverage.
In February this year along with 500 high-profile figures he signed an open letter in February urging the BBC to rebroadcast a documentary, Gaza: How To Survive A War Zone, to BBC iPlayer. The BBC board highlighted 'serious flaws' in the making of this programme.
In April he was outspoken again and said some BBC bosses 'wanted' him out of the corporation, despite still having a contract with them for more than a year.
And finally a month later he is exiting the broadcaster early, however, after apologising for sharing and then deleting a post on his Instagram account from the group Palestine Lobby, illustrated with a picture of a rat, which prompted calls for him to be sacked from the Campaign Against Antisemitism (CAA).
Lineker was an iconic football presenter who millions will know as one of the faces of England's highs and lows in World Cups and European Championships. But having famously never been booked in his football career where he was so level headed, he has been asked to leave by the BBC for an ill advised decision.

What Marcus Rashford gets right – and wrong
Marcus Rashford, formerly of Manchester United, now of Barcelona, has opened up about his time at Old Trafford in a podcast interview with Gary Lineker (and an excitable Micah Richards) ahead of the start of the Spanish and English seasons on Friday. Despite Lineker interceding as often as possible to talk about his glory days in Spain (did you know he once played for Barcelona? and got a hat-trick against Real Madrid?) Rashford managed to get in some astute and revealing comments about the modern game and how topflight clubs (and one in particular) are often their own worst enemies. It is refreshing to hear such honest and forthright views, expressed seemingly without so much bitterness as frustration Rashford, who more than any other player witnessed the psychodrama of the post-Alex Ferguson Manchester United, pulled at the threads of the Gordian knot of his former club's seemingly interminable malaise (United finished 15th last year losing 18 games in the process). Rashford seems to lay on the blame on a 'reactionary' (meaning reactive) mindset which saw managers fired before they had had sufficient time to establish any sort of system. Rashford saw nine different managers (full and caretaker) come and go and it seems to have been dizzying: for example Louis van Gaal wanted to play with flair, his successor Jose Mourinho just wanted to win at all costs and wouldn't criticise or offer advice to Rashford on his off-days if United had still managed to win. 'People say we've been in a transition, but the transition hasn't started yet', Rashford continued, using the present tense for his former club (he is still a fan). 'You have to make a plan and stick to it. We've had that many different managers and that many different ideas that you end up in no man's land… if your directions always changing, you can't expect to win the league'. He highlighted the importance of having 'principles', such as existed during the fabled Fergie era and which permeated throughout the entire club, but, he believes, no longer do. Another part of the problem it would seem is the at times hysterical denunciations of former players. Rashford took a swipe at the old pros (surely Gay Neville and Roy Keane) who have made a habit of seemingly unfiltered clickbaity rants about current players and teams. Rashford said he would never do that and had no interest in being a pundit post-retirement, despite Lineker's rather unctuous assurances that he would make a great one. Some might suggest a degree of inconsistency in Rashford's argument. Managers may be dispensed with far too quickly but it could be argued that Rashford was given ample chances, perhaps even too many. He played 426 games for the club scoring 138 goals. At times he threatened to be the answer to the club's prayers for a consistent bang-them-in-every-week striker in the mould of a van Nistelrooy, van Persie or Andy Cole, without ever quite nailing the role. He was finally farmed out to Villa last year from whence he has moved onto Barcelona in what many see as a somewhat generously offered and possibly final chance at the very big time. Rashford perhaps doesn't appreciate the enormous commercial pressures that top clubs face, with massive rewards and penalties for failing to secure a Champion's League place, finishing in the bottom half of the league or God forbid relegation. With literally hundreds of millions at stake the pressure to fire a manager and possibly revitalise a team and thus save the season must be immense – and it wasn't quite like that in the Fergie era. In that light, the decision to keep United's current manager Ruben Amorim despite a nightmare season seems positively enlightened – Europa cup-winning Angelos Postecoglou was shown the door. The average tenure of a Premier League manager (according to a study by Issuu) is 1.42 years. Still, it was refreshing to hear such honest and forthright views, expressed seemingly without so much bitterness as frustration, from a player who been criticised for lacking commitment but seems to have moved on. There was no mention of changing the world, his previous obsession, and Rashford looked to be fully focused on his career. He admitted to sometimes playing disappointingly at Manchester United and seemed committed to a fresh start (including language lessons) in Spain and cementing his place in the England squad ahead of next year's World Cup. As evidence of this, when Linker suggested Rashford had been overly criticised in the past because of his skin colour, Rashford refused to take the bait, preferring to stick to football matters. At a time when the FA has finally begun to unwind it's long and lamentable association with Stonewall, and taking the knee, rainbow laces and arm bands appear to be on the way out, it was a further signal of a welcome change in the football zeitgeist. As for Lineker, he will apparently soon present a quiz show called The Box. Many will be wishing all that woke baggage which he so enthusiastically championed could be put in one, which would then be securely sealed, and we could all get back to just talking about football.

John has made it abundantly clear he wants Robert out of the way, deliberately targeting him and this is only set to continue. Amid spoilers revealing Robert and ex Aaron Dingle grow closer, sparking affair predictions, we will see Aaron's husband John desperate to keep the pair apart. So how far will he go to get rid of his brother, and could it see Robert sent back to prison? Robert was released earlier this year after six years inside over the death of Lee Posner. Fans are now concerned that if Mack is killed off, John will cover his tracks and pin it all on Robert to get him locked up yet again. One fan posted on social media: "John better not frame Robert for Mack's murder." Another viewer said: "He'll probably frame Robert and Aaron carries on being blind until next spring." It comes as actor Lawrence addressed the rumoured exit for the first time on Loose Women on Wednesday. He said: "There are lots of rumours, and rumours they shall remain", before adding: "I've always said that being in the show that I never want to be too prescriptive with it. " But when asked how he would feel about being killed off, he admitted that he would always feel grateful for the time he's had on the show, as he issued a warning to fans. He said: "I've always enjoyed doing what I'm doing. If, and when, the time to leave comes, whether that would be my choice or the choice of the producers, then I will be thankful for the time that I've had. Ultimately, no one is safe in the show", before quipping: "Especially not in that village!" On the future for Mack amid a row with his wife Charity Dingle and the stuff with John, Lawrence recently remained coy but did hint at bad things ahead. He simply said: "It's not looking good." Lawrence went on: "Whilst Mackenzie has got the argument with Charity on his plate, he's also got a pretty critical moment with John on his plate as well. And, combine these two things and it does not spell good things." Princess Andre's 'dark' world as Katie Price's ex Kieran Hayler issues grovelling statement
Katie Price's marriage to her third husband was marred by toxicity, persistent infidelity and a 'Mucky Mansion' - now Princess Andre has spoken of her childhood pain Princess Andre has a new reality show and The Princess Diaries is already giving us plenty of insight into her relationship with mum Katie Price. One of the big takeaways from the the ITV show is that the 18-year-old influencer's admission that Katie's troubled past had led her to experience things 'kids shouldn't see'. "I wish I could have had a happier childhood," she said. "I had so much on my plate at such a young age and had things at the back of my mind." Princess, who is the daughter of Katie's first husband Peter Andre, was 10 when her mum split from third husband Kieran Hayler after five years together. "Mum was heartbroken and she went through a dark time and it was things kids shouldn't see and when we needed our mum there, she wasn't there because she had her own problems," the teenager said on the show. "I'm not healed or fully recovered from it but mum has fixed herself compared to how she was back then." Katie, 47, and Kieran married in Weston-Super-Mare in 2013 and went onto have two children together, Jett and Bunny. They renewed their vows in Barbados in 2016 on what was said to be a make or break holiday, with Kieran cheating on Katie multiple times throughout the course of their relationship. One of Kieran's mistresses was Jane Pountney, Katie's friend of 20 years and he cheated on her with a second pal, Chrissy Thomas. The vow renewal didn't work - in 2017 the former glamour model found out Kieran had been unfaithful once more with their children's nanny, Nikki Brown and the following year they went their separate ways. "He did a lot of stuff and when they split up everything kind of went downhill," said Princess. "My mum, obviously being heartbroken, didn't deal with that the best way. She went through a very, very like dark time, which is understandable." Katie later opened up about her 'toxic' marriage to Kieran, blaming him for the 'disgusting' state of her home and her depression, which saw her want to stay sleep all day. The 38-year-old reality star told the Daily Mail this week he would love to apologise in person to Princess for the impact his troubled relationship with Katie had on her. "I am as sorry as I can be to Princess witnessing us go through such a horrible separation," he said. "Leaving them was one of the hardest things I ever had to do." But Kieran, who revealed he longer has a relationship with his former step-children, also told the publication he had been the best step dad he could be. "I regret the way things happened but at the same time those are issues I never put around the children, they were put around the children by everything becoming so public," he said. Kieran moved on with Michelle Penticost and they had son Apollo before they split earlier this year. In 2019, Michelle secured a restraining order against Katie for harassing her.
