One password, 700 jobs lost: How a ransomware attack crushed a 158-year-old UK firm

Time of India22-07-2025
It took just one weak password for cybercriminals to bring down KNP, a 158-year-old transport company based in Northamptonshire—leaving 700 people without jobs and a legacy in ruins.
KNP, which operated a fleet of 500 lorries under the Knights of Old brand, is one of tens of thousands of UK businesses hit by ransomware gangs. Even retail giants like M&S, Harrods, and Co-op have been recent targets. Co-op's CEO confirmed that data from all 6.5 million members had been stolen in a recent attack.

In KNP's case, the breach likely began with hackers guessing a single employee's password. That opened the door to a full-scale digital siege. The attackers, identified as the notorious Akira ransomware group, encrypted the company's systems, locking staff out of critical data. The only way out? Pay a ransom that experts estimated could be as high as £5 million—a sum KNP couldn't afford.
"If you're reading this it means the internal infrastructure of your company is fully or partially dead…Let's keep all the tears and resentment to ourselves and try to build a constructive dialogue," read the ransom note.
Despite industry-compliant IT systems and cyber insurance, KNP had no way to recover its data. The company collapsed under the weight of the attack. Director Paul Abbott, visibly shaken, says he never told the employee whose password may have triggered the disaster.
Live Events
The UK has been the victim of many high-profile ransomware attacks in recent years, from the "WannaCry" cyber attack that crippled Britain's National Health Service in 2017 to the British Library suffering disruption when it refused to pay a ransom in 2023.
Ransomware, which is malicious software used by criminals to access victims' computer systems, encrypt data, or steal information and hold it hostage until a ransom is paid, is estimated to cost the economy millions of pounds each year.

Merck to cut jobs and costs as demand for Gardasil in China remains weak

Drugmaker Merck & Co on Tuesday announced job and cost cuts it said will save $3 billion a year as it posted lower second-quarter results due to continuing weak demand for its Gardasil vaccine in China. The company said the cost cuts include $1.7 billion in annual savings from the elimination of certain administrative, sales and R&D positions. It also plans to reduce its global real estate footprint and optimize its manufacturing network. The company expects to achieve the full $3 billion in annual savings by the end of 2027. Investors have been concerned about where Merck will replace revenue from its blockbuster cancer treatment Keytruda - the world's best-selling drug, which is set to lose patent protection toward the end of the decade. Gardasil's problems in China have also been a drag on the company's results. Live Events Merck said it earned $5.4 billion, or $2.13 a share, in the quarter , down from $5.8 billion, or $2.28 a share, a year earlier. Analysts, on average, had forecast earnings of $2.01 a share. Merck's quarterly R&D costs were lower than expected. Revenue in the quarter was $15.8 billion, down from $16.1 billion a year earlier. Analysts, on average, were expecting revenue of $15.9 billion. Gardasil sales missed already weak Wall Street estimates. The company said it sold $1.1 billion of the vaccine, which prevents cancer caused by the human papillomavirus, down 55% from a year ago. Analysts had been expecting $1.3 billion of Gardasil sales in the quarter. Merck paused shipments of Gardasil to China in January. It said the decline was primarily in China, but lower demand in Japan had hurt sales as well. Sales of Keytruda rose 9% to just under $8 billion in the quarter, topping analyst forecasts of $7.9 billion. The company, which announced a $10 billion takeover of UK-based Verona Pharma earlier in July, narrowed its full-year revenue forecast to a range of $64.3 billion to $65.3 billion. It had previously forecast revenue of $64.1 billion to $65.6 billion for the year. It now expects to earn $8.87 to $8.97 a share in 2025. Analysts had forecast 2025 earnings to be $8.87.

Indonesia expects palm oil exports to India to exceed 5 mn-tonnes mark in 2025: IPOC Chairman

Indonesia expects palm oil exports to India to exceed the 5 million-tonnes mark in 2025, up from 4.8 million tonnes in 2024, following India's decision to cut import tariffs, a senior industry official said. The world's top palm oil producer is also shipping 100,000 germinated palm seeds to India this year to support the South Asian nation's ambitious plan to expand palm cultivation to 1 million hectares by 2025-26, Indonesia Palm Oil Council (IPOC) chairman Eddy Martono told PTI in an interview. Indonesia's palm oil exports to India fell to 4.8 million tonnes in 2024 calendar year, from 6 million tonnes in 2023, partly due to higher palm oil prices compared to soybean and sunflower oils for most of 2024. Live Events However, palm oil prices have traded below soybean oil since April 2025, improving competitiveness. "I think there is no problem with the price this year. In 2025, I am sure we will increase exports to India," Martono said. India is ramping up palm seed imports as part of its National Mission on Edible Oils-Oil Palm (NMEO-OP), which aims to expand cultivation from the current 350,000 hectares to 1 million hectares by 2025-26. The country purchased about 500,000 seeds in 2023 and 2024 combined, with 100,000 more expected this year, Martono said. About 200 palm seeds are required for cultivation per hectare. Indonesia supports palm seed exports to India through business-to-business arrangements and can provide technical guidance given its experience in palm cultivation, he added. IPOC and the Indian Vegetable Oil Producers' Association (IVPA) recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding to enhance collaboration in the palm oil sector. "India is a very important market for Indonesia. Hope to see stable exports to India after the MoU," Martono said. The partnership also aims to address consumer concerns about palm oil's health impacts in India. "Consumers in India still have misconceptions about Indonesian palm oil. Palm oil is very healthy oil," Martono said, adding that IPOC is collaborating with IVPA to counter negative campaigns about Indonesian palm oil. India is the world's largest importer and consumer of edible oils.

RBI proposes easing business authorisation norms for urban cooperative banks

Mumbai, Jul 28 (PTI) The RBI on Monday proposed to replace the existing norms for urban cooperative banks (UCBs) with a harmonised eligibility criteria for certain business authorisations, permissions and approvals. The Reserve Bank has proposed that large UCBs (falling in Tier 3 and Tier 4 categories) which are in compliance with eligibility criteria for business authorisation (ECBA) and having a minimum assessed net worth (ANW) of Rs 50 crore may extend their area of operation beyond the state of registration, subject to prior approval of the Reserve Bank. The UCB would be permitted to extend its area of operation to a maximum of two states in a financial year, subject to the availability of adequate headroom capital required for opening at least five branches in each proposed state, said the draft Master Direction – Business Authorization for Co-operative Banks (Directions), 2025. A UCB may extend its area of operation to the whole of its district of registration without prior permission from the RBI, it said. 'A UCB in compliance with ECBA may extend its area of operation to a maximum of three districts of its choice within its state of registration (other than its district of registration), without prior permission from the Reserve Bank," said the draft on which the RBI has invited comments till August 25, 2025. The RBI has categorised UCBs in four tiers for regulatory purposes. UCBs with deposits of more than Rs 1,000 crore and up to Rs 10,000 crore fall in Tier 3 and those with deposits of more than Rs 10,000 in Tier 4. The draft also said a bank should determine its compliance with the ECBA every year based on the audited financial statements as of 31 March of the immediately preceding fiscal year and place it before its Board within 30 days from the date of adoption of the audit report.
