Pointless Celebrities star says breaking world record made 'boring TV'

Yahoo19-04-2025

Pointless Celebrities contestant Georgie Barrat has recalled breaking a world record in VR.
Speaking to the format's long-running host Alexander Armstrong on Saturday, 19 April, the 35-year-old explained how her 26.5-hour Minecraft marathon didn't make for compelling TV material.
Apparently, a producer on The Gadget Show (which Barrat has co-presented since 2017) even went as far as to label it "the most boring bit of television" the programme had ever created.
"Fabulous to have you here," Armstrong told Barrat before her first attempt at Pointless.
"Now you present The Gadget Show; I would like to know what's the gadget that we should all have?"
She replied: "Well I love virtual reality. [VR headsets] are really, really good fun," before opening up about clinching a recognised world record.

"So you're looking at the person that's been in VR the longest playing one VR game.
"I played Minecraft for 26 and a half hours straight! Lucky I don't get sick, some people feel quite nauseous when they're in VR for too long," Barrat continued.
"But I did it for The Gadget Show and at the end the producer said to me: 'That's the most boring bit of television we've ever made. I've got 26 and a half hours of footage of you just sort of sat in the corner with the VR headset on...' I'm like, 'I had a good time!' I built a lot of stuff in Minecraft in that time."
Launched by Swedish developer Mojang Studios in 2011, Minecraft has gone on to become the bestselling video game of all-time, shipping over 300 million copies as of last year.
Players spend their time exploring a "procedurally generated, three-dimensional" landscape, where they're supposed to unearth and extract raw materials, fashion tools, and build structures and machines in voxel form. Minecraft offers gamers two primary modes (survival mode and creative mode), plus three others (spectator mode, adventure mode and hardcore mode).
Such is the franchise's behemoth status, Hollywood released a live-action adaptation titled A Minecraft Movie this month, starring Jack Black, Jason Momoa and Peacemaker's Danielle Brooks.
At the time of writing, its box office haul has already soared past $662 million.
Pointless Celebrities airs on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

DC Studios May Have a Movie-Free SDCC This Year

If you were hoping to learn more about DC Studios' future movie slate at this year's San Diego Comic-Con, that might not be in the cards. We recently learned Marvel Studios wasn't planning on having a Hall H panel for this year's San Diego Comic-Con. Now, it sounds like DC Studios is going to follow suit, at least for the cinematic side of its business. In the Hollywood Reporter's recent Heat Vision newsletter, the outlet claims DC isn't looking to show off anything for Superman or Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow during the annual festivities. The former will have been out for two weeks by that point, and the latter isn't due for almost a full year later, not to mention other projects like The Batman Part II or The Authority seemingly haven't hit any real progress yet. As such, the studio is reportedly 'biding its time before making any reveals.' What will be at SDCC this year, however, is Peacemaker. The HBO Max series' second season is dropping in mid-August, so DC Studios is said to be going 'all in,' said Heat Vision. 'Peacemaker will have a big footprint at the convention. […] And, while DC had no comment, there could be a Hall H panel for the show.' Lanterns, the other big DC show for HBO Max, is currently in production. Depending on how far along things are, it could potentially make an appearance of some kind. San Diego Comic-Con runs July 24-27, and we'll have more information on what DC Studios plans to do for the event in the coming weeks. [via IGN]

Panellists on hit BBC One show left bemused at Southampton council meeting

Panellists on the hit BBC One show Have I Got News For You were left bemused after watching clips from Southampton City Council's "interspecies democracy meeting". The creative council meeting saw actors and councillors play species that cannot speak or vote in an election speak on the challenge they face in Southampton, as part of the campaign for the city to become a National Park City. Councillor Dave Shields played an owl in the interspecies democracy meeting. Southampton's National Park City campaign continues as it looks to become the first national park city outside of London. Southampton Test MP Satvir Kaur backed the movement in Parliament, later posting on social media: "I often say that the quality of natural spaces we are blessed with in Southampton is the jewel in our crown, and I am doing everything I can in Westminster to support the efforts for National Park City status."

Princess Sofia Missed a Dazzling Tiara Moment After Debuting Baby Princess Ines at Royal Event

State banquets are always a highlight on the royal calendar, filled with pomp, ceremony, elaborate decor and, of course, tiaras. The Swedish royal family owns quite the collection of jewels, and they brought out the bling for a state banquet in honor of an Icelandic state visit on Tuesday, May 6. While King Carl XVI Gustaf, Queen Silvia, Crown Princess Victoria, Prince Daniel, Prince Carl Philip, Princess Madeleine and her husband, Chris O'Neill, attended the glittering event, Princess Sofia was notably absent. Although 40-year-old Sofia, who is married to Prince Carl Philip, recently brought her three-month-old daughter, Princess Ines, for her first balcony appearance on April 30, she stayed home from the banquet. The Swedish princess gave birth to baby Ines on Feb. 7 and therefore is officially on maternity leave, but she did step out on the palace balcony last month as it was her father-in-law the king's birthday. Along with baby Ines, Princess Sofia and Prince Carl Philip are the parents of three boys: Prince Alexander, 9, Prince Gabriel, 7, and 4-year-old Prince Julian. Sofia might have skipped this week's state banquet, but her mother-in-law and sisters-in-law dazzled in heirloom family jewelry—and even sneakers—at the event. Queen Silvia kept it comfy in white trainers as she recovered from a foot surgery, pairing her sneakers with a sparkly pink gown and matching wrap. And although her footwear might have been sensible, she went big with her jewels. The Swedish queen wore a diamond tiara known as Queen Sofia's tiara, adding a massive pink topaz and diamond necklace and matching earrings. As for Crown Princess Victoria, she repeated a white gown covered in colorful floral appliqués, adding the Swedish Aquamarine Kokoshnik tiara to her look. Meanwhile, Princess Madeleine—who wore a strapless, berry-hued gown—debuted a special family diadem, wearing the King Edward VII Ruby Tiara. Per The Court Jeweller, Madeleine is the only modern royal to have worn the 120-year-old piece other than Queen Silvia.
