Indonesia's sovereign wealth fund Danantara seeks up to US$10 billion loan: sources

Business Times30-06-2025
[JAKARTA] Indonesian sovereign wealth fund Danantara is seeking a multicurrency borrowing of as much as US$10 billion, in what could be South-east Asia's largest loan, according to people familiar with the matter.
Danantara, formally known as Daya Anagata Nusantara, sent a request for proposals to regional and international banks for a loan with tenors of around three to five years, the people said, who asked not to be identified discussing private matters. Lenders have been asked to provide underwritten commitments and proposals on an uncommitted basis, they added.
The loan will be unsecured and will not carry any guarantee nor come with letters of comfort or support from the government, the people said, adding that proceeds will be for general corporate purposes.
Danantara did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The fund, which reports directly to President Prabowo Subianto, is a core component of the president's vision to propel South-east Asia's largest economy to 8 per cent growth during his presidency. With Indonesian state-owned enterprises under its supervision – including some of the nation's largest banks, oil and gas giant PT Pertamina and the holding company for the government's mining interests – executives have suggested the fund will have more than US$1 trillion in assets.
However, many of the details about how Danantara will operate are 'understandably' still unclear given its infancy, making it tricky to discern both the risks and the upsides, said Nicolas Painvin, global head of international public finance at Fitch Ratings in an interview with Bloomberg News in May.
Earlier this month, Danantara's managing director Arief Budiman said that the sovereign wealth fund plans to invest in projects from eight sectors, including renewables, digital infrastructure and healthcare.
The largest Indonesian loan was from the government itself, which raised a 3 billion euros (S$4.5 billion) facility in September 2023, according to Bloomberg-compiled data. The biggest borrowing from South-east Asia is a US$9.75 billion bridge loan that had backed a Singapore consortium's acquisition of soft drinks producer Fraser & Neave in November 2012, the data showed.
The International Financing Review, or IFR, first reported on Danantara's loan. BLOOMBERG

Bessent says US tariff revenues to rise ‘substantially,' focus on reducing debt

Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent expects to substantially revise upward his earlier estimate of US$300 billion (S$3.8 billion) in revenues from the tariffs. WASHINGTON - US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said he expects a big jump in revenues from sweeping tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump, and said the money would be used first to start paying down the federal debt, not to give rebate cheques to Americans. Mr Bessent, speaking in an interview on CNBC's Squawk Box, said he expected to substantially revise upward his earlier estimate of US$300 billion (S$3.8 billion) in revenues from the tariffs, but declined to be more specific. Mr Bessent said he had not spoken with Mr Trump about the idea of using funds from the tariffs to create a dividend for Americans, but stressed that both of them were 'laser-focused' on paying down the debt. 'I've been saying that tariff revenue could be US$300 billion this year. I'm going to have to revise that up substantially,' Mr Bessent said. 'We're going to bring down the deficit to GDP. We'll start paying down the debt, and then at that point that can be used as an offset to the American people.' The US economy could return to the 'good, low-inflationary growth' of the 1990s, Mr Bessent said, but he blamed higher interest rates for problems plaguing some pockets of the economy, singling out housing and lower-income households with high credit card debt. A cut in the Federal Reserve's key interest rate - which Mr Trump has continually pressed for - could help facilitate a boom or pickup in home building, which would help keep prices down in one to two years, he said. The US Census Bureau on Aug 19 reported a small increase in groundbreaking for single-family homes and permits for future construction in July, even as high mortgage rates and economic uncertainty continued to hamper home purchases. Recent indications of softening in the job market, however, have largely convinced investors that the Fed will cut rates by a quarter of a percentage point when it meets in mid-September. That expectation has helped bring down mortgage rates in recent weeks. Mr Bessent has previously said a 50-basis-point cut in rates was warranted. REUTERS

What is B30A? Nvidia Prepares New, More Powerful Blackwell-Based AI Chip for China

US-based semiconductor giant Nvidia is developing a new artificial intelligence chip for the Chinese market, sources familiar with the matter revealed. The processor, known internally as the B30A, will be based on Nvidia's latest Blackwell architecture and is expected to be more powerful than the H20 chip currently approved for sale in China. Nvidia X The move comes after U.S. President Donald Trump signaled last week that Washington may allow more advanced chips to be exported to China. However, approval remains uncertain as U.S. lawmakers continue to express concerns about providing Beijing with access to high-performance AI technology. The B30A will reportedly use a single-die design, offering roughly half the computing power of Nvidia's flagship B300, which uses a dual-die configuration. Despite the scaled-down performance, the chip will feature high-bandwidth memory and Nvidia's NVLink interconnect, similar to the H20 but built on newer technology. Although the final specifications are not yet confirmed, Nvidia aims to deliver samples of the chip to Chinese clients for testing as early as next month. In a statement, the company said it regularly evaluates new products to remain competitive "to the extent governments allow," emphasizing that all offerings comply fully with regulatory approvals. China accounted for about 13% of Nvidia's revenue last year, making it a critical market despite heavy restrictions. In July, the U.S. allowed Nvidia to resume sales of the H20, which had been halted earlier this year. Trump later suggested that future Nvidia chips for China could come with "30% to 50% off" in computing power compared to flagship models, calling the H20 "obsolete." The question of how much AI hardware China should access remains one of the most sensitive issues in U.S.-China trade relations. Nvidia has argued that continued engagement with Chinese firms is necessary to prevent them from switching entirely to local rivals like Huawei, which is rapidly improving its chip capabilities. Chinese state media have recently raised security concerns about Nvidia's chips, warning local companies about potential risks. Nvidia has denied those claims, saying its hardware contains no hidden vulnerabilities. Alongside the B30A, Nvidia is also preparing another China-specific chip, the RTX6000D, designed mainly for AI inference tasks. This processor, also based on Blackwell architecture, will have reduced specifications to comply with U.S. export thresholds. Small batches are expected to reach Chinese clients by September.

US hikes steel, aluminum tariffs on imported wind turbines, cranes, railcars

WASHINGTON :The U.S. Commerce Department on Tuesday said it is hiking steel and aluminum tariffs on more than 400 products including wind turbines, mobile cranes, bulldozers and other heavy equipment, along with railcars, furniture and hundreds of other products. The department said 407 product categories are being added to the list of 'derivative' steel and aluminum products covered by sectoral tariffs, with a 50 per cent tariff on any steel and aluminum content of these products. The department is also adding imported parts for automotive exhaust systems and electrical steel needed for electric vehicles to the new tariffs. A group of foreign automakers had urged the department not to add the parts saying the U.S. does not have the domestic capacity to handle current demand. The new tariffs take effect immediately and also cover compressors and pumps. "Today's action expands the reach of the steel and aluminum tariffs and shuts down avenues for circumvention – supporting the continued revitalization of the American steel and aluminum industries," said Under Secretary of Commerce for Industry and Security Jeffrey Kessler. Steelmakers including Cleveland Cliffs and others had petitioned the administration to expand the tariffs to include additional steel and aluminum auto parts.
