Fahmi calls on Madani Communities to tackle fake news and misinformation
SANDAKAN, April 27 — Madani Communities must become communities that understand 3R (race, religion, royalty) issues and be capable of tackling slander and fake news related to the government.
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said to realise this, Madani Communities — multiracial volunteer bodies managed by the Information Department (Japen) — are reminded to verify information before spreading it publicly, and to play their role as proper delivery channels.
'Don't normalise, copy information and then spread without verifying beforehand. Spreading fake news can land you in prison, spreading untrue things can result in hefty fines, so we have to issue reminders.
'Tell the public not to be easily deceived by information they get, we want to spread what's true,' he said during the 2025 Sabah Zone Series 1 Madani Community Retreat Programme Discussion Session here today.
Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, Japen director-general Julina Johan, Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) editor-in-chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj and Sabah Japen director Jainisah Mohd Noor also attended the session, along with about 500 participants from 109 Madani Communities throughout Sabah.
Fahmi also reminded everyone to be careful with the newest tactics of using links that look like wedding invitations employed by scammers.
'There are individuals who sent links that seem to be their children's banquet invitation, but when I asked for the screenshot of the invitation, they asked me to click the link.
'I have asked the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to look for the individual, and they immediately deleted the link... so I advise everyone to please be cautious, scammers are very shrewd,' he added. — Bernama

Mohd Na'im Urges Firm Action Against Misuse Of Children's Images On Social Media
KUALA LUMPUR, June 13 (Bernama) -- Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs), Senator Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar, has urged authorities to take firm action against the misuse of children's and teenagers' images on social media, particularly involving immoral content. He was referring to recent revelations by actress and social media influencer Mek Yun, who disclosed that a photo of her from her school days was circulated in a Facebook group allegedly promoting sexual content involving children. 'Even more shocking was the open confession of a group member who admitted to committing sexual assault against a child. 'This is a heinous and disgusting crime that not only violates the law, but also transgresses the boundaries of humanity and the moral values of society,' he said in a statement today. Mohd Na'im stressed that protecting children was a shared responsibility that must be upheld by all members of society, and such heinous acts should not be allowed to persist. He also advised adults to be mindful of their behaviour and language when dealing with children, both in person and online. At the same time, he reminded the public of Islamic teachings that emphasised protection for the vulnerable. 'In this regard, the words of Allah provide very clear guidance, namely: 'Allah does not like evil words to be uttered publicly unless by one who has been wronged. And Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing' (Surah An-Nisa': 148). 'The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) also warned against neglecting the rights of the weak, particularly orphans and women. Yusoff Rawther Case: Police To Review Judgment, Ready To Improve Investigation SOPs
KUALA LUMPUR, June 13 (Bernama) -- The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) is awaiting the full written judgment in the Yusoff Rawther case to identify any gaps or shortcomings in the investigation process. Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said the force is prepared to enhance its investigative procedures through internal evaluation and a review of existing standard operating procedures (SOPs). 'PDRM acknowledges, respects and welcomes the reactions and views expressed by various quarters concerning the High Court's decision in the Yusoff Rawther case. 'These views reflect a genuine interest in ensuring that the country's criminal justice system continues to uphold the principles of justice and human rights,' he said in a statement today. He added that all police reports are investigated fairly and without prejudice, including cases involving high-profile suspects, and that decisions on prosecutions are made in accordance with Article 145(3) of the Federal Constitution, under the discretion of the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC). Razarudin said the police report lodged by Yusoff Rawther on 12 September 2024 was investigated in parallel with two investigation papers relating to the discovery of cannabis and imitation firearms. He added that there was no necessity to record a statement from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, as the required action had been taken at the initial stage of the complaint. 'At that juncture, PDRM had submitted both investigation papers to the AGC with recommendations for prosecution. Based on the available evidence at the time, it was deemed sufficient to charge Yusoff Rawther without the need to interview any other parties to complete the investigation. 'As with other cases previously decided by the courts, PDRM remains attentive to judgments that are not in its favour and is committed to taking proactive measures to improve the quality of investigations and strengthen prosecutorial outcomes,' he said.
