‘Ka for Kaba, Ma for Masjid': MP convent school under fire over alphabet charts

A convent school in Madhya Pradesh's Raisen found itself at the centre of a raging controversy after an alphabet chart containing Islamic references was allegedly distributed to children. The material, said to resemble charts used in madrasas, was flagged by parents.(Representational Image) The flashpoint? Hindi alphabet charts reportedly handed out by the principal of Baby Convent School, IA Qureshi, which listed religious terms like 'Ka' for Kaba, 'Ma' for Masjid, and 'Na' for Namaz. According to PTI, the incident triggered protests and a formal inquiry by the education department, officials said on Saturday. Members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad staged a protest on Friday and gheraoed Qureshi after the incident. The material, said to resemble charts used in madrasas, was flagged by parents and quickly drew the attention of local Hindu groups. Police were called to the scene to prevent escalation. Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Pratibha Sharma said police personnel controlled the situation. "The matter is related to the education department and referred to the district education officer (DEO)," Sharma said. DEO DD Rajak confirmed that an inquiry is underway. "As per the Education department's guidelines, study material containing religious symbols of any particular faith cannot be taught in schools," he added. School principal's stance In her defence, Principal Qureshi admitted the mistake but insisted it was unintentional. Principal Qureshi admitted her "inadvertent" mistake, stating that one or two such books with mixed Urdu-Hindi multiplication tables had reached students. She claimed the charts of alphabets were sourced from Bhopal and, due to the seller's error, three to four such items, generally used in madrasas, were included. Meanwhile, in another separate incident, two teachers at a madrassa in this Uttar Pradesh district have been booked for allegedly assaulting and threatening a 12-year-old student for two consecutive days, police said on Friday. According to the police, the boy, who hails from Jalhoopur village in Varanasi's Chaubepur area, was staying in the hostel of Madrassa Imdadul Uloom in Khamaria along with his elder brother for studies. On August 5, a theft reportedly took place inside the madrassa. Following the incident, the boy's father alleged that on August 6, teacher Numan Saeed beat his son with a stick, and on August 7, another teacher, Rizwanuddin, assaulted him in a similar manner, accusing him in connection with the theft. The repeated beatings left the boy's back, arms, and legs badly bruised and discoloured. He was also threatened, police said.

UP: Man kills 62-year-old lawyer in Jhansi over case dispute, held

Last Updated: Jhansi (UP), Aug 9 (PTI) Police have arrested a man for allegedly killing a retired Additional District Government Counsel (ADGC), citing resentment over the lawyer's handling of his criminal case, officials said on Saturday. City Superintendent of Police Gyanendra Kumar Singh said that on the morning of August 5, 62-year-old Bhanu Prakash Sarwaria, a resident of Talpura under Nawabad police station, was murdered at his home by an unidentified assailant. The victim's son-in-law, Sachin Verma, a resident of Awas Vikas, lodged a case under section 103 (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), he said. 'During the investigation, police learned that Sarwaria also lent money at interest. He recently had a dispute with his neighbour, Sachin Verma, 26, son of Prem Kumar Dashariya, over such dealings. On being detained, Sachin confessed to the killing," Singh said. Police said that in 2001, Sachin had been jailed in a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act for kidnapping and sexually assaulting his girlfriend. Sarwaria was representing him in the matter, but Sachin believed the lawyer was neglecting his case. Last year, due to alleged lapses in representation, a warrant was issued against Sachin, resulting in three months' imprisonment, police added. Sachin also owed Sarwaria Rs 60,000, and the lawyer had seized his motorcycle over the unpaid debt. Fearing conviction in the next hearing scheduled for September 19, Sachin allegedly entered Sarwaria's home through the roof on August 5 and strangled him, police said. 'On Friday evening, police arrested Sachin Verma near Kanpur Road Chungi and sent him to jail," Singh said. Seven killed as wall collapses in Delhis Jaitpur amid heavy rains

New Delhi, Aug 9 (PTI) Seven people were killed when a wall collapsed near Mohan Baba Mandir in Jaitpur amid heavy rains in the national capital on Saturday morning, police said. While the Delhi Fire Service (DFS) earlier claimed that eight people had died in the incident, police later stated that seven victims were confirmed dead and one injured person was undergoing treatment. According to DFS officials, the department received a call regarding the wall collapse at 9:16 a.m. Three fire tenders, along with police teams, rushed to the spot. The downpour, which began late Friday night around 11 pm, had lashed several parts of Delhi-NCR, and the India Meteorological Department had issued a red alert for Saturday. Police said the PCR received the first call about the collapse at 9:13 a.m., with the caller stating in Hindi, 'Badi deewar gir gayi hai," and that four to five persons were trapped under the debris. A senior police officer said that upon receiving the call, the Station House Officer (SHO) of Jaitpur, along with all available staff, immediately reached the site carrying ropes and other rescue tools. 'Rescue operations were initiated without delay. Additional DCP (South-East) Aishwarya Sharma and ACP Ravishankar also arrived to oversee the operations," the officer said. The officer added that the wall was broken through to rescue those trapped. Eight persons were pulled out and rushed to the AIIMS Trauma Centre and Safdarjung Hospital. 'Of the eight, seven — including three men, two women, and two minor girls — succumbed to their injuries during treatment. The injured person, identified as Hasibul (27), son of Khushana, a resident of Gangadhari, Jortalapara in West Bengal's Murshidabad district, is undergoing treatment at Safdarjung Hospital's trauma centre," said the officer. Police said a thorough search was carried out by the Delhi Fire Service and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams, but no other persons were found under the debris. The exact cause of the wall collapse is yet to be ascertained. However, officials pointed to the possibility of waterlogging and soil weakening due to the overnight heavy rainfall. A senior DFS official said, 'The intensity of the rain since Friday night has been very high, which may have led to weakening of structures in low-lying and vulnerable areas. In this case, we are still examining whether poor maintenance, construction defects, or natural causes triggered the collapse." The national capital received heavy rainfall through the night, causing waterlogging in several areas, traffic snarls, and reports of minor wall collapses and tree falls from across the city. Police said a case is being registered under appropriate sections of law, and an investigation will be taken up. 'We will look into the structural condition of the wall, ownership, and any negligence involved. Statements of witnesses and survivors will be recorded," the officer said.
