Drunk driver who killed deputy and his daughter in Riverside County pleads guilty
Scott Bales, 47, admitted to all allegations, including previous driving under the influence charges and the two counts of second-degree murder, according to the Riverside County District Attorney's Office. The court sentenced him to 30 years to life in prison.
The deadly crash happened in November 2022 along the winding two-lane highway, Gilman Springs Road, in Moreno Valley. The California Highway Patrol said Bales was driving his Chevrolet Silverado while drunk and swerved into oncoming traffic, striking a Honda Insight head-on.
The collision launched the sedan off the road, killing Correctional Corporal Daniel Jacks Jr. and his 19-year-old daughter Hannah.
Jacks, 45, began his tenure with the RCSD over a decade ago and was assigned to a few jails in the Inland Empire. During his career, he was stationed in Indio and Palm Springs. He was only recently promoted to corporal.
In 2022, the Riverside County Sheriff's Department said they were saddened to announce the deaths of the father and daughter and noted that they belonged to a loving family of four.

Chargers LB Denzel Perryman arrested on weapons violations
Los Angeles Chargers linebackers Denzel Perryman was arrested on weapons violations on Friday night, according to USA TODAY. Perryman was booked on a felony charge, per the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. "NFL player, Denzel Perryman, was arrested by South Los Angeles Station deputies on Friday, August 1, 2025. Deputies conducted a traffic stop of Mr. Perryman's vehicle for vehicle code violations. During their investigation, Mr. Perryman was arrested for multiple weapons violations," the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said in a statement to USA TODAY Sports. "Mr. Perryman was extremely cooperative with deputies throughout the investigation." According to TMZ, the 32-year-old Perryman, who is in his 11th NFL season, was on his way to a gun range when he was pulled over by police. Officers searched his car and found two AR-15 rifles and three handguns in his trunk. The rifles were reportedly non-compliant, which is against the law in California. Perryman is expected in court on Tuesday. Perryman was selected in the second round of the 2015 NFL draft and spent the first six seasons of his career with the Chargers. After signing with the Carolina Panthers in March 2021, he was dealt to the Las Vegas Raiders five months later. Following two years with the Raiders, he signed a one-year contract with the Houston Texans. He re-joined the Chargers in March 2024.

Lake County Sheriff's Office releases photos of pickup truck sought in fatal hit-and-run in Beach Park
The Lake County Sheriff's Office is asking for the public's help in locating a pickup truck wanted in connection with a fatal hit-and-run crash involving a motorcyclist in Beach Park last week. Just before 6 a.m. on July 27, deputies responded to the intersection of Green Bay Road and Sallmon Avenue for a report of a downed motorcycle and rider in the roadway. The rider was pronounced dead at the scene. The office identified him as 19-year-old Adrian Rogel-Villanueva of Waukegan. Deputies said the Kawasaki sports bike the victim rode had damage consistent with being hit by the truck that fled from the scene. The office said investigators have identified the vehicle as a maroon 2017 GMC Sierra pickup truck, which is believed to be currently garaged or at a body repair shop. The truck would have front-end damage and damage to the passenger side. Crash investigators believed the owner removed the license plates, so it's possible the truck has no plates or plates that do not match the vehicle. The truck has two decals on the top of the rear window, but they may have been removed by the owner. Anyone with information about the vehicle's location or the hit-and-run is asked to contact the sheriff's crash investigators at 847-377-4000 or Lake County CrimeStoppers at 847-662-2222.
