Sports Seriously
Quarterback Jayden Daniels' rookie season was so good that it convinced a former Cowboys wide receiver to come out of retirement to play with him.
Michael Gallup, who announced his initial retirement last July, is returning to pro football to play for the Commanders. The team announced Thursday it had signed the six-year NFL veteran to a contract. Details are still to come.
"They've got a good foundation here. They're building something good. I want to be a part of it," the veteran wideout said in his introductory press conference.
Gallup played six seasons for Dallas from 2018 to 2023 before the team released him in a salary cap-related move. He went on to sign a one-year contract with the Raiders last April, but fewer than three months later, he announced his retirement from the NFL. Gallup, then 28, did not play during the 2024 season.
DEEBO SAMUEL TRADE: How Brock Purdy, 49ers, Commanders are impacted
The Cowboys drafted Gallup out of Colorado State with a third-round pick in 2018. In six seasons in Dallas, the wideout played in 86 games (starting 67) and had 266 catches for 3,744 yards and 21 touchdowns.
Gallup dealt with some injury troubles in the latter years of his time with the Cowboys. In 2021, he missed seven games with a calf injury he suffered in Week 1, and in Week 17 of that same season, he tore his ACL. His production never returned to the heights of 2019 and 2020, when he had back-to-back seasons with more than 800 yards and at least five touchdowns.
In 2023, Gallup's most recent season, he caught 34 passes for 418 yards and two touchdowns.

Baltimore Ravens rookie LaJohntay Wester receiving one-on-one coaching from John Harbaugh

AI-assisted summary Former Colorado wide receiver LaJohntay Wester, a sixth-round NFL draft pick by the Baltimore Ravens, is impressing coaches with his special-teams play. Wester has been working closely with Ravens head coach John Harbaugh on improving his punt return skills during OTAs and minicamp. While primarily drafted for special teams, Wester's performance and coaching interactions could lead to a larger offensive role. Wester's impressive punt return statistics at Florida Atlantic earned him the AAC Special Teams Player of the Year in 2023. While most eyes have been on former Colorado stars Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter through the NFL's offseason programs, a few Buffs have gone under the radar, including the speedy receiver LaJohntay Wester. Wester was selected in the sixth round of the NFL draft and is expected to be an immediate playmaker on special teams, making his transition to the pros promising. With this combination of size and explosiveness, along with his toughness, Wester has been turning heads throughout OTAs and minicamp, even getting some one-on-one coaching from Baltimore head coach John Harbaugh. Harbaugh was spotted giving some advice to Wester that should help tune his return skills. The two spoke during drills, with Harbaugh coaching Wester on ball-tracking skills and drills he can use to improve his technique. Wester went on to implement those drills, improving with each punt he caught. In his lone season at Colorado, Wester had nine punt returns, with a 76-yard return against Utah, and averaged 12 yards per return. In his time with Florida Atlantic, however, he had carved out a role as a special teamer, returning 14 punts for 278 yards and one touchdown in 2023, earning him the American Athletic Conference Special Teams Player of the Year. Though he is pegged as a special-teams contributor, his performance and rapport with Harbaugh could give him a broader role. Wester will still need to prove himself on Baltimore's special teams, especially as a sixth-round pick, to gain a larger role on the Ravens' offense. However, showing out during the offseason is a step in the right direction. Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle With training camp around the corner, Wester has laid a strong foundation. While nothing is guaranteed, his willingness to learn and apply feedback from Harbaugh speaks volumes to his character. Legendary Rams QB named among highest-graded players since 2000

Legendary Rams QB named among highest-graded players since 2000 The Los Angeles Rams' history over the past 25 years has been up and down. The franchise enjoyed a great start to the millennium with two consecutive playoff appearances and one Super Bowl berth before not seeing much success until Sean McVay became head coach in 2017. But over the past 25 years, one Rams quarterback made Pro Football Network's top-25 highest-graded quarterbacks list: Kurt Warner. He was a three-time Pro Bowler, two-time All-Pro and two-time MVP during his six years with the Rams after going undrafted in 1994 and playing for the AFL and NFL Europe. "Kurt Warner's career started before the QB+ era, but it includes some of the best years measured by the metric. In 2000, he led the NFL in completion percentage (67.7%), yards per completion (14.6), and net yards per pass attempt (9.03). "Warner made his mark with the St. Louis Rams during 'The Greatest Show on Turf,' one of the NFL's most explosive offenses. He later had a successful run with the Arizona Cardinals, earning a Pro Bowl nod in 2008 at age 37. Warner finished his career with 32,344 passing yards, 208 touchdowns, and a 93.7 passer rating. In 2001, he led the league with 4,830 yards and 36 TD passes. "From an advanced standpoint, Warner's numbers weren't elite but were solid — +0.13 EPA per dropback and 7.5 net yards per attempt. Those numbers, combined with his playoff success, helped earn him a spot in the Pro Football Hall of Fame." As PFN noted, Warner was the leader of "The Greatest Show on Turf" alongside Torry Holt, Isaac Bruce and Marshall Faulk. The group only won on Super Bowl together in 1999, but proved to be one of the most exciting teams to watch in the NFL at the turn of the century. Now, his bust sits in the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a sign of one of the greatest Rams players ever.
