USC women's basketball to face former Pac-12 foe Cal in San Francisco on December 21

When USC moved to the Big Ten last year, the Trojans lost several of their longtime Pac-12 rivalries. For one USC team, however, that will change this winter. On Wednesday, it was announced that USC women's basketball will face former conference foe Cal at Chase Center in San Francisco on December 21.
"Old friends; old foes," head coach Lindsay Gottlieb wrote on social media. "Bay Area, see you in December!"
Gottlieb, of course, is quite familiar with Cal, having served as the head coach of the program from 2011-2019. In 2013, she took the Bears to their only Final Four in program history.
The matchup with Cal is one of numerous high-profile nonconference matchups that USC will face next season. The Trojans also have games scheduled against UConn, Notre Dame, South Carolina, and NC State. Gottlieb seems to be sending a clear message with her scheduling philosophy: The Women of Troy are not afraid of afraid of anyone, and will gladly face off against the best teams in the country.

Collin Morikawa's struggles on the greens continue: 'No confidence today'

Collin Morikawa isn't just searching for a new caddie. He's trying to find his putting stroke, too. Morikawa shot 3-under 69 Thursday to open the Rocket Classic. He was six shots off Min Woo Lee's early lead, having missed only three greens and scrambling perfectly on those few occasions. But he also made just over 42 feet of putts while losing over four and a half strokes to the field on the greens (that stat will obviously change over the course of the afternoon, though once all 156 competitors had logged at least a hole, it ranked Morikawa last in the field). 'I hit it good enough to play well, putted like a blind man, honestly,' Morikawa said. 'It's just an uncomfortable feeling shoving everything and not being able to square up the face. It's tough. … You've got a lot of poa growing in, you have to just be confident with your stroke, and there was just no confidence today after seeing a couple miss.' Morikawa put an Olson Tour Matrix 1.0 Round putter in the bag ahead of last week's Travelers Championship, replacing the TaylorMade TP Soto he was previously using. He went on to finish 45th out of 72 players in strokes gained putting, and despite leading the field off the tee, he tied for 42nd in the tournament. He entered this week ranked No. 109 in strokes gained putting for the year. In Thursday's first round at Detroit Golf Club, Morikawa converted just one putt from outside 5 feet – a birdie putt from 6 feet, 3 inches at the par-3 fifth. He also missed eight putts inside 12 feet, including a 3-footer at the par-4 second. Morikawa blamed mostly his stroke and not his reads. 'Today was just, you know, nothing starting online, and that's tough when your speed's a little bit off, not starting online,' Morikawa explained. 'You're just essentially wishing, and not ideal for a course like this where you've got to take it low. … I feel like I'm reading 'em fine, it's just whether I can actually start it and have it with decent speed.' Asked if he planned to trying something else on Friday, Morikawa responded, 'Yeah, very highly likely for tomorrow.' It wasn't all frustrating, though. Morikawa, who has former Cal teammate K.K. Limbhasut on the bag this week after splitting with caddie Joe Greiner, gained around three shots on approach, boosted by his near albatross at the par-5 17th, where he flagged his second shot from 276 yards out to 3 inches. 'I've never made a 2 on a par 5,' Morikawa said. 'Sucks, but I'll take 3 any day there.'

LSU baseball transfer portal: Could Tigers add elite west coast infielder?

Fresh off its eighth national championship, LSU baseball is looking to reload in the transfer portal. One major hole to fill is at second base with every starter Daniel Dickinson heading to the MLB. The Tigers have a few options to plug in, but it would serve them better to bring in an experienced addition. Enter Jarren Advincula, who started all but one game in the middle infield for Cal since he stepped on campus. A 2025 second-team All-ACC honoree, he batted .334 with 150 hits and 64 RBI through two seasons with the Bears. The Santa Clara, CA native boasts a .970 fielding percentage over his two years of collegiate baseball. He enjoyed a 22-game hit streak midseason, which included three hits in a win at Duke, and then stroked three hits between Cal's two upsets over Miami and Georgia Tech in the ACC Tournament. Advincula has enough quality experience as a hitter and fielder to join LSU's starting lineup. The Tigers already received commitments from transfers Brayden Simpson and Seth Darder, but both are more suited for third base, as is returner Tanner Reaves. LSU has become a premier transfer portal destination, but the Tigers have some competition for Advincula with Tennessee also making a push.

ESPN analyst ranks USC's Ja'Kobi Lane as top wide receiver prospect for 2026 NFL draft

After a relatively quiet freshman season in 2023, USC wide receiver Ja'Kobi Lane broke out last fall. Following a massive performance in the Trojans' Las Vegas Bowl victory over Texas A&M. Lane now enters 2025 as an unquestioned leader in USC's wide receiver room. Lane's breakout attracted the attention of not just his Trojans teammates, but NFL Draft scouts as well. Recently, ESPN analysts Matt Miller and Jordan Reid released lists of their top prospects at every position for the 2026 NFL Draft. Reid was very high on Lane, ranking his as his top wide receiver on the board. Here is what Reid had to say about Lane: "I have the 6-4, 195-pound redshirt sophomore ranked higher than everyone and will continue to reside on that island," Reid wrote. "But he is a polarizing prospect who has many scouts needing to see more. Despite 12 touchdowns last season, Lane had only 528 receiving yards and was held below 50 yards in eight of USC's 13 games. There isn't a true WR1 in this class yet, so, with a bit more consistency, Lane has the opportunity to rise and be the first receiver off the board." As Reid highlights, Lane certainly showed major flashes of his potential last season. But he still has a way's to go in terms of establishing himself as an elite NFL prospect. Fortunately for Lane, he will have plenty of opportunities to do so this fall.
