
WestJet CEO says reducing industry costs would help foster national unity
In a speech to a Calgary business audience, Alexis von Hoensbroech questioned why transport infrastructure like bridges, passenger rail and ferries get federal support, while the government imposes a host of costs on the airline industry that are then passed along to consumers.
"We need to build Canada — now even more than in the past — and aviation plays a key role," he said Tuesday.
Von Hoensbroech quipped that his address had to compete for attention with the throne speech delivered on the same day by King Charles in Ottawa, which set out the Liberal government's legislative agenda.
"But the King actually said today, 'The government is guided by conviction that the economy is only truly strong when it serves everyone,' and many, many Canadians are struggling to get ahead," von Hoensbroech said.
His presentation included a slide comparing government-imposed costs in Canada versus the United States. In Canada, sales tax, navigation fees, airport improvement fees and security fees amounted to $133 in a round-trip ticket price, whereas south of the border the excise tax and segment fee, passenger facility charge and security fee added up to $49.
He said it's "fundamentally wrong" that air travel is not treated as essential in a country where it's the only connection to the outside world in many communities.
"If the government wants to unite Canada and take down internal trade barriers, then reducing the cost of air travel by reducing fees that are imposed on air travel and ultimately make tickets cheaper would be the right thing to do," von Hoensbroech told reporters.
"Right now, there are millions of Canadians that cannot afford an air ticket, and a lot of this is because of the infrastructure costs and fees and charges are so high, and so much higher than in most other countries."
Von Hoensbroech's remarks follow calls from several business leaders in recent months to reduce internal trade barriers and expand Canada's international reach as the U.S. becomes an increasingly unreliable trading partner.
In a backlash against U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs and expressed desire to make Canada the "51st state" and treatment of marginalized groups, many Canadians have cancelled trips and booked flights to spots outside America over the past five months.
The WestJet CEO said bookings into the next couple of months suggest Canadians' cross-border travel on the airline is down in the "mid-to-high-teens percentage points" compared to last year, but that traffic is shifting to Europe and the Caribbean.
Rival airline Air Canada said in an email Monday it will suspend three more U.S.-Canada routes — Toronto-Indianapolis, Montreal-Detroit and Montreal-Minneapolis — starting this fall for "commercial" reasons.
The cuts come after the country's largest carrier in March reduced flights by 10 per cent to Florida, Las Vegas and Arizona — usually go-to hot spots during spring break season. Competitors Flair Airlines and Air Transat have made similar moves.
Last month, the number of Canadians returning home by air from the United States dropped 20 per cent compared with April 2024, according to Statistics Canada. The number of American plane visitors to Canada fell 5.5 per cent.
Trump has in recent weeks tamped down his Canadian annexation talk and he seemed to strike a genial tone during an Oval Office meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney earlier this month.
Von Hoensbroech said his airline is already seeing signs the U.S. market is picking up a bit.
"What we have seen in the past in our industry is that whenever there's a change in demand patterns for political reasons, it's usually transitional and long-term demand trends usually flow back to where they were in the past," he said.

BC Greens leadership to take youthful turn, with contenders' average age of 30

Greens in 1993 after campaigning against McDonald's use of ozone-damaging foam packaging. He said youth alone won't be enough to sustain the next leader of the Greens, in a race where the average age of the contenders is just 30. 'So yes, I got in as the young, radical urbanite, but I maintained my leadership of that party for seven years by spending my time on the road,' said Parker, who has also run for the New Democrats and more recently has worked for the B.C. Conservatives. Parker said he campaigned not on his age, but by shaking as many hands as possible, and meeting and listening to people. The Greens' leadership contest, with a voting period from Sept. 13 to 23, features 24 year-old Emily Lowan, who is an organizer with Climate Action Network Canada, 23-year-old student Adam Bremner-Akins, and family doctor Jonathan Kerr, the elder of the group at 44. By comparison, the last two Green leaders, Sonia Furstenau and Andrew Weaver, were 54 and 59 respectively when they stood down. Lowan and Bremner-Akins have no doubts that they are experienced enough to lead. 'I absolutely think I am, and I don't think that is just arrogance,' Lowan said, adding she has a 'decade of extremely relevant experience as a movement-builder, as a campaigner and a policy researcher.' Bremner-Akins, meanwhile, pointed to his experience on the party's provincial council and two runs as candidate for the party. 'It's not always used on the younger end of the spectrum, but age is just a number,' Bremner-Akins said. 'Whether you are in your 60s, 70s 80s or 20s — it is just a number, and I have been through a lot. If people want to know, I'm seasoned. I have been fired for union organizing. I have taken on roles inside the party. I have run for election.' UBC political science lecturer Stewart Prest said having two candidates in their 20s offered a 'silver lining' for the party, because it was a chance for renewal and to distinguish the party from rivals. But there were also risks. 'At same time, it makes it that much harder to make the claim that they're a party ready to govern, that they are ready to compete and offer an alternative both to the NDP and to the Conservatives,' he added. 'So, I don't know that there is a single personnel choice here available to the Greens to turn things around.' Whoever wins, the B.C. Greens are leaning into the youth movement, both rhetorically and logistically. The party's website describes the contest as 'an opportunity for a bold new vision, fresh energy, and renewed commitment to building a sustainable, just, and prosperous British Columbia.' And party membership is free for everyone aged 14 to 29. Party members as young as 16 can vote in the contest. That emphasis isn't solely the Greens' domain. The NDP's 2022 leadership contest let members as young as 12 vote, while the Conservatives' 2023 race set the age limit at 14. Neither of the Greens' two MLAs, Rob Botterell and Jeremy Valeriote, who is the interim leader, are seeking the leadership. The Greens may have maintained a presence in the legislature after last year's election, but the party's vote share dropped from about 15 per cent to just above eight per cent, amid an increasingly polarized political environment. Prest added that 'barring a change in the electoral system ... there's only so much the Greens can do here to remain relevant.' He said the Greens should instead focus on a regional strategy. Kerr, a twice-elected municipal councillor in Comox on Vancouver Island and vice-chair of the Comox Valley Regional District, disagreed. He said his leadership campaign tour across B.C. showed 'there is Green support everywhere,' including in northern and central B.C., where voters want to see forestry practices that focus on conservation, selective logging, and value-added production to keep mills open. 'People care and see what we've been doing isn't working,' he said. 'I am focused on the environment and climate. That is how I got involved with the Greens. But I'm equally focused on creating a clean economy, a new economy that's better.' When asked whether young party members should take a flyer from a 44-year-old, Kerr chuckled. 'Isn't that funny?' he said. 'I'm the old guy in the race.' Lowan said she was running because the party needed a 'true organizer to bring this party back to life,' so it can 'be a strong thorn in the side of the governing party.' Over the years, the party had lost its youth base and connection to social and climate movements, she said. She said she wanted 'to challenge the oligarchs that really run the show in the premier's office,' as well as projects she said were jeopardizing the climate and affordability. She said the Greens need to move in 'lockstep' with social and climate movements, with young people, workers, renters and Indigenous communities for the party to have a future. 'In this moment of time, the Greens have a real crossroads, between fading into the background, or choosing to be a bold, galvanizing party,' she said. Bremner-Akins said the party needed a leader 'who lives with the problems we're facing in the province, whether that's housing affordability, the rising cost of living, the existential threat of climate change we're facing,' he said. He added that people 'need someone who isn't just passionate about issues' but 'lives with them and is motivated to deal with them because people are frustrated' by the lack of 'relative urgency' from governments. Kerr said both Lowan and Bremner-Akins were 'great young leaders' with much to offer, saying as leader he would work to get them elected as MLAs alongside him. Prest cautioned that there was no guarantee the next leader of the Greens would win a seat in the legislature, let alone the two other candidates. But he said the two younger candidates' presence in the race pointed to an 'area of potential growth for the Greens'- young, progressive voters disenchanted with the NDP on issues including the environment and energy, after nearly a decade in office. Parker, who also led the B.C. Ecosocialist party before resigning in 2020 over comments that critics called transphobic, said the Greens were currently 'incapable of being relevant' in B.C. politics. But he had some advice. 'If you are a radical party, people are supposed to be offended by your opinions,' Parker said. 'If you are not offending anybody, you are doing it wrong.' Union says 'nothing scheduled' with Air Canada as strike by flight attendants halts operations
Social Sharing The union representing Air Canada flight attendants says no talks are scheduled with the airline as a strike that began early Saturday led to the airline suspending operations. The union and airline met late Friday night before 10,000 flight attendants walked off the job at 12:58 a.m. ET, Wesley Lesosky, president of the Air Canada component of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), told a morning news conference. Lesosky said their last meeting was Friday night, but Air Canada offered "nothing of substance" to bring back to members. Asked when Canadians could expect to be back on flights, Lesosky said it's up to Air Canada, but that public pressure on the airline will make a "huge difference" in reaching a settlement. CBC News has reached out to Air Canada for comment and will update this story with any response. Jobs Minister Patty Hajdu also met with both the airline and union on Friday night. "It is unacceptable that such little progress has been made. Canadians are counting on both parties to put forward their best efforts," Hajdu said on social media platform X. Picket lines set up across Canada All Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge flights are suspended for now. Around 130,000 customers will be affected each day the strike continues, said the airline. "Air Canada deeply regrets the effect the strike is having on customers," it said in a brief statement early Saturday morning. CUPE has set up picket lines at airports across Canada, including in Montreal, Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver. Striking flight attendants also plan to picket at airports in Halifax, Ottawa and Winnipeg. In the meantime, passengers around the world are feeling the effects of the flight attendants' strike. Keelin Pringnitz and her family are from Ottawa and were returning from a European vacation, but were left stranded after flights were cancelled. "It was an end of my maternity leave kind of trip. We went to the Faroe Islands and Norway, travelling through Air Canada to London," Pringnitz said from London's Heathrow Airport. She noted there was an option for travellers to go the U.S. but she and others were told there wouldn't be any further assistance once they landed in the U.S. "It didn't go over well with the line. Nobody really seemed interested, everybody seemed a little bit amused almost at the suggestion, or exasperated, because it is a bit ridiculous to offer to take stranded passengers to a different country to strand them there." For customers due to travel soon whose flights are not yet cancelled, Air Canada said it will allow them to rebook their travel or obtain a credit for future travel. Sides at an impasse on pay Air Canada and CUPE have been in contract talks for about eight months, but have yet to reach a tentative deal. Both sides say they remain far apart on the issue of pay and the unpaid work flight attendants do when planes aren't in the air.
