Hollyoaks star 'helpless' in secret health battle - 'My body's exhausted'

Daily Mirror20-05-2025

Hollyoaks' Isabelle Smith has become a fan favourite as troubled teen, Frankie Osborne. Here, she talks her 'whirlwind' time on the soap - and the health battle that's 'not got any better'
Despite arriving in Hollyoaks just last year, Isabelle Smith has quickly become one of the soap's rising stars. The actress took on the role of troubled teen Frankie Osborne in January 2024 and, eight months later, she won Best Newcomer at the Inside Soap Awards. She has also been nominated for Best Dramatic Performance at the 2025 British Soap Awards, which takes place on 31 May.
With hard-hitting storylines and potentially more awards to come, it's hard to believe that Isabelle was working on checkout tills before landing the job. 'It's just been very surreal – I never expected any of this to happen,' she says. 'I was working in the supermarket before I got my job at Hollyoaks so it's been a whirlwind.'

Viewers have watched as Frankie endured harrowing abuse at the hands of her brother JJ and recently began taking and selling drugs. The scenes are intense and Isabelle has a health condition that she has to manage at the same time. 'Endometriosis affects me every single day as I'm sure it does a lot of women,' she says.
Endometriosis is a condition where cells similar to those in the lining of the womb grow in other parts of the body. Isabelle explains she underwent a laparoscopy – surgery to diagnose and remove endometriosis tissue – when she was 21, but she still suffers daily symptoms, which can include chronic pelvic pain, painful periods, heavy bleeding and digestive issues.
'It's been nearly three years since I had that and it hasn't gotten any better,' she reveals. 'When I'm on set, I'm just mindful that things might take me a bit longer. If I've done Pilates, I need to remember that I probably need a rest day in between. I get really bad fatigue so when I'm filming long days, sometimes I come home and I just go straight to sleep because my body's so exhausted. I try to keep my blood sugars up with snacks and make sure I have a hot water bottle and ibuprofen on hand, just in case.'
Isabelle, 23, says she's learnt not to push herself too far at work and to look after herself. 'That's coming more with age – the power of being able to say no to things and putting my health first,' she says. 'I've not been very good at doing that but I'm getting a bit older now and my friends and family are so understanding. I need to say, 'No, actually I can't do that because I need to rest,' which sometimes makes me feel a bit useless and helpless but everybody reminds me that it's just my body and I need to take care of it.'
After a challenging day of filming, Isabelle has boyfriend Adam Seel to spend time with – the couple live together in Manchester. 'We film in Liverpool so my drive home is where I do a lot of my de-stressing,' she says.

'I'll put on some good music, call my boyfriend to have a debrief then we'll have tea and watch a good series. If I've had a bad day, I'll put on Married At First Sight because that always cheers me up. I've got a little cat because I've grown up with animals and we didn't have one here so I was feeling a bit down. So we adopted a cat and it's crazy – they really are like emotional support animals.'
With her upcoming storylines sounding very dark, it's no wonder she needs to wind down after work. Viewers are set to see Frankie's sexual exploitation storyline develop as her parents, Darren and Nancy, try to find her after she's taken hostage by the gang who have been grooming her. Darren manages to find her at a manor house but, with the gang preventing their escape, it's unclear whether they'll make it out unharmed.
'We've been exploring sexual and criminal exploitation and Frankie is somebody who is very vulnerable at this time in her life,' says Isabelle. 'She's not really sure who she can trust so she's fallen into another trap. Frankie has been taken, she's not sure how she's going to get out and I think she's in a little bit too deep.

"She's quite isolated and that's when the sexual exploitation side of things really ramps up – there's going to be some harrowing scenes but it's so important that this stuff is given a spotlight because it does happen in real life. It can be very intense and quite overwhelming to film, but I just remind myself of why we're doing this and how it's helping so many people.'
As for Isabelle's future at Hollyoaks, the actress admits she thinks she might know when she's going to leave. 'I think I know in my head and I think they know as well – but Frankie is here for a while longer,' she says. 'But in the world of soap, I could get hit by a bus – you don't know what's going to come through with each script and that's what makes it so fun and fresh.'
For her next project, Isabelle admits there are certain actors she'd like to work with. 'I'd love to work with Siobhan Finneran – I think she's incredible. A dream would be to work with Jodie Comer. Just all these powerhouses of women.'

Hollyoaks Freddie Roscoe star breaks silence on exit with message to bosses

Hollyoaks favourite Freddie Roscoe's final scenes have aired and fans of the Channel 4 soap have been left heartbroken as Charlie Clapham shares sad announcement Charlie Clapham has bid farewell to Hollyoaks once again. The 33-year-old actor returned to the Channel 4 soap as Freddie Roscoe in 2024 after seven years in a huge twist fans didn't see coming. ‌ His comeback sparked a frenzy amongst avid viewers but it looks like Freddie has once again left the fictional village for pastures new. ‌ During Wednesday's (June 4) intense episode, Warren Fox (Jamie Lomas) returned to the village and got his revenge on love rival Freddie after learning he never gave his letter to Mercedes McQueen (Jennifer Metcalfe). Freddie got a shock when Warren cornered him in the garage with a gun, having evaded prison because of his "friends in high places". Threatening his daughter Lexi Roscoe (Marnie Fletcher) if he didn't comply, Warren demanded that Freddie writes a suicide note, remarking that everyone in his life would be better off without him. Freddie did as he was told and penned a goodbye letter to Mercedes and she was devastated to read about her partner's supposed death. Taking to Instagram, Charlie shared with fans: "What a ride. This isn't goodbye @hollyoaksofficial just a see you soon..., or maybe not, who knows!? Thank you for your kindess. Ciao 4 now." #onemoreepisode #bringlatersback #nohatersjustlaters. ‌ His hashtags are reference to Hollyoaks Later, a spin-off show which aired in a late-night time slot between 2008 and 2002 and delved deeper into the lives, loves and misdemeanours of some of the Hollyoaks characters and offered raunchier storylines and events than its parent programme which airs earlier in the day. Charlie has been unsurprisingly inundated with support from fans since his social media post confirming his final scenes have aired. ‌ One fan penned: "My heart is breaking all over again like 16 yr old me! will miss seeing you on my screen but wish you the absolute best of luck with whatever exciting adventure you're onto next! I can't wait to see! Freddie Roscoe will always have a huge place in my heart. " Another added: "What an absolute joy it's been having you back! Good luck with your next epic adventure Charlie!" A third person said: "You'll never be replaced and will ALWAYS be the hottest guy that Hollyoaks has ever seen." ‌ A fourth agreed: "Gutted . Wishing you luck in whatever you chose to do next. Ill be sure to watch whatever it is." Charlie joined the soap as Freddie back in 2013 and left in 2017 after seeking "justice" by assaulting on-off girlfriend Ellie Nightingale's attacker, leading to the lone-ranger going on the run. He was twice nominated for the best British Soap Actor award, Best Newcomer 2014 and last ever winner of TV soap's Sexiest Male award.

EastEnders star hints at Celebrity Traitors drama after filming 'stressful' show

EastEnders actress Tameka Empson, who plays Kim Fox on the BBC soap, told The Mirror all about her 'stressful' but 'great' stint on Celebrity Traitors, teasing drama ahead Soap star Tameka Empson found Celebrity Traitors so "stressful" she can never look at a circular table ever again, after filming the dreaded Round Table scenes. "Can we get a square table, maybe an oval one," the EastEnders favourite joked with The Mirror at this year's British Soap Awards. But despite some tense moments, all to be revealed when the show launches this Autumn, the Kim Fox actress, who took a short break from the BBC soap to film Claudia Winkleman's hit competition series, said she had a "great time". ‌ Tameka, 48, can't wait to see it all unfold onscreen, hinting she wasn't there for some of the moments set to air. Perhaps this could tease an early banishment for the comedian, while she told us of her appearance on the show alongside the likes of Clare Balding, Stephen Fry and Jonathan Ross: "It's out of the bag now. I loved it. ‌ "What I would say is that when you watch it and then when you are in it, it's two completely different things. Oh my God." Letting out a nervous laugh, she went on: "It is brilliant, but equally it can be stressful. You are working out who is who. I had a great time." As we asked whether the several comedians taking part, herself included, brought a light-hearted feel to the show, she teased this was not the case, with it set to be just as dramatic as the civilian version. She told us: "Well you have got to wait and see. I am looking forward to seeing it as well actually. "When you are watching it you are seeing everything else too, but when you are in it you are not. So I am interested to see it all." It's then that she commented on the brutal Round Table scenes, suggesting things could get pretty tense this series. She quipped: "I can't look at a Round Table again, I'm like, 'Do we have a square or oval please?'. Never a round table again." With Tameka away from EastEnders for filming in Scotland, she teased when her character Kim does return there's emotional scenes ahead. She spilled: "There is going to be more joy now that Kim is back on the Square, and she is going to be a bit emotional. ‌ "I hope viewers understand her pain. Maybe I've said too much." Tameka also teased a return for presumed dead Vincent Hubbard, Kim's late husband played by Richard Blackwood, who vanished from the show in 2018. It was claimed a few years later that he'd been killed, but could he be making a return? Tameka teased: "If he turns up then he's got to turn up with something in his hands. It's been a long while now. Watch this space people." Tameka then confessed she'd like to see Kim have two men fighting over her like onscreen sister Denise Fox. During the 40th anniversary, viewers got to vote for who Denise ended up with out of Jack Branning and Ravi Gulati. The actress reckons Denise and Jack's reunion was perfect as the pair, who have worked together for years, are like "old slippers". She's now hoping she too will have a similar twist.

Hollyoaks Clare's downfall 'confirmed' as axed character returns for revenge

Hollyoaks' Tom Cunningham actor Ellis Hollins told The Mirror all about his return to the Channel 4 soap, and a possible showdown with enemy Clare Devine after years apart There could be the showdown of all showdowns on Hollyoaks very soon, with a huge return possibly leading to revenge. Actor Ellis Hollins spoke to The Mirror about his big comeback just months after his axe from the role of Tom Cunningham. Fans were gutted when Tom left the show after more than two decades. ‌ Just recently we saw the return of villain and show favourite Clare Devine, played by actress Gemma Bissix. Clare and Tom had quite the history, and now that might be revisited in dramatic upcoming episodes. ‌ Speaking exclusively to The Mirror at the British Soap Awards, Tom actor Ellis confirmed his return and confirmed there'd be scenes ahead of Tom's nemesis Clare. Clare terrorised Tom as a child, but now Tom may get his vengeance. Ellis told us: "It's very strange to come back at the same time as Clare. It's almost like they're gonna cross paths... but we'll see what happens." The actor vowed that if a showdown was to happen, Tom would be prepared this time now that he's grown up. But he also teased a twist fans might not expect. Ellis explained to us: "He was vulnerable and defenceless, and there was only so much he could do as a child. So it's gonna be very interesting now that Tom is grown up, and he can fend for himself if needs be. "She was the muscle back then so it's gonna be very interesting to see what storylines will come up with that and what the writers can invent for the two characters." On the past coming back to haunt them both, he went on: "I think there's a lot there they can work with. There's a lot of history." ‌ But Ellis wondered whether in a major twist, Tom and Clare could be on the same side. He shared: "I had wondered if we'd form a partnership, but I'm not too optimistic about something like that happening. We'll see what goes on down the line and whether our characters diverge, or if they'll hate each other even more." Asked if a final showdown could be on the way, he revealed: "To really have that second chance for Tom to have redemption against Clare is important for a lot of people, as well as for Tom himself. It's gonna be so interesting to see whether Tom can get his revenge on Clare and whether he bides his time, and how orchestrated it will be." It doesn't seem as though we will find out what Tom has been up to since he left the village months ago as part of the show changes. He told us: "It's interesting, I'd love to answer that but as far as I'm aware I don't know. It's not something that has been communicated about a flashback, as much as it would be very interesting to see what Tom has been up to." On what fans can expect from the soap's 30th anniversary later this year, he spilled: "When I got the call I was assuming it was something to do with the 30th, but it's still quite premature. So I'm hoping there's gonna be something related to it but maybe on the sidelines, like reacting to certain people and not being in a crash!" Hollyoaks is available to stream on Channel 4's streaming service now, while it also airs Mondays to Wednesdays on E4 at 7PM. * Follow Mirror Celebs and TV on TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and Threads.
