JMM to stage protests demanding Sarna Code on May 27 in Jharkhand

RANCHI: To step up pressure on the Central government, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) has announced a statewide protest on May 27, demanding approval of the Sarna Tribal Religious Code Bill.
Party General Secretary and spokesperson Vinod Pandey has issued an official directive to all district presidents, stating that the 'Sarna Adivasi Dharma Code' Bill has been pending with the Central Government for the last five years, but no concrete steps have been taken on it so far.
According to Panday, there is deep resentment among the tribal communities of the state due to this situation, therefore, there is a need to make the voices of the people heard at the Central level.
The Party General Secretary also reiterated that until the Sarna Dharma Code is recognised, the phased movement will continue with the slogan "No Census".
Earlier, the demonstration proposed for May 9 on the issue, was postponed due to the tense situation between India and Pakistan. Now, the party has once again decided to raise the issue loudly.

JMM slams Modi's 11-year tenure, says India's global image has weakened

Ranchi (Jharkhand) [India], June 10 (ANI): The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) on Tuesday launched a scathing attack on the Narendra Modi-led government, alleging that the last 11 years of his leadership have seen '111 failures' that have pushed the country backwards. The party claimed that India's diplomatic standing has deteriorated. Addressing a press conference, JMM General Secretary Supriyo Bhattacharya said, 'Modiji has spent crores of rupees on his abroad trips and even after Pahalgam Attacks only Israel stood with us while everyone else did not take our side. The US President claims to ensure a ceasefire between India and Pakistan while the BJP is taking about nationalism. Where are the four militants who executed the Pahalgam incident?' Bhattacharya also took a jibe at India's global positioning, claiming the country now needs to 'give an application' to be invited to the upcoming G7 summit in Canada. On the domestic front, the JMM leader raised concerns over inflation, unemployment, and what he alleged was the misuse of institutions. 'Before 2014, MSMEs contributed 16 per cent to the GDP. Today, it's barely 7 per cent --the sector is nearly dead. The BJP had promised two crore jobs, but jobs were taken away.' He also rejected Union Minister Smriti Irani's claims that the last 11 years were focused on the welfare of the poor and women empowerment. 'The BJP claims that 25 crore people have been lifted from poverty but they are one who are providing foodgrains to 80 crore prices were Rs 28,000 per 10 grams in 2014 which has now increased to Rs 98,000 while the price of one dollar has increased from Rs 60 to 90,' he said. The JMM also questioned the construction of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. 'Even the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya has been constructed on orders of the Supreme Court and that too 12 kilometres away from where Ram Lalla was originally placed... the Ram Mandir has been constructed on orders of the Supreme Court and that too 12 kilometres away from where Ram Lalla was originally placed,' he said. The remarks come as the BJP marks 11 years of Narendra Modi's leadership. PM Modi assumed office on May 26, 2014, and was sworn in for a third consecutive term on June 9, 2024. Earlier, BJP leader Smriti Irani told ANI, '11 years of good governance were dedicated to the welfare of the poor, welfare of agriculture, and women empowerment. BJP workers, with a happy heart, heartily express their gratitude towards PM Narendra Modi... In the democratic history of our country, PM Narendra Modi has worked for the welfare of the country via various schemes... We pray for his strong leadership to continue...' (ANI)

Government notifies SEZ reforms to boost Semiconductor and Electronics component manufacturing

The Union government has introduced pioneering reforms in the Special Economic Zones (SEZ) rules to address the specialized needs of semiconductor and electronics component manufacturing sectors. Since manufacturing in these sectors is highly capital intensive, import dependent and involve longer gestation periods before turning profitable, rule amendments have been carried out to promote pioneering investments and boost manufacturing in these high technology sectors. After amendments in Rule 5 of SEZ Rules, 2006, an SEZ set up exclusively for the manufacturing of semiconductors or electronic components will require a minimum contiguous land area of only 10 hectares, reduced from the earlier requirement of 50 hectares. Further, amendment to Rule 7 of SEZ Rules, 2006, allows the Board of Approval for SEZs to relax the condition requiring SEZ land to be encumbrance-free in cases where it is mortgaged or leased to the Central or State Government or their authorized agencies. The amended Rule 53 will allow the value of goods received and supplied on a free-of-cost basis to be included in Net Foreign Exchange (NFE) calculations and assessed using applicable customs valuation rules. Moreover, amendments have been made in Rule 18 of the SEZ Rules to allow SEZ units in semiconductor as well as electronics component manufacturing sector to also supply domestically into the Domestic Tariff area as well after payment of applicable duties. The amendments will boost high-tech manufacturing, spur growth of semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem and create high skilled jobs in the country. These amendments have been notified by the Department of Commerce on 3rd June, 2025.

Kerala's kerosene distribution plans remain a non-starter

Despite receiving a Central allocation of 56.76 lakh litres of kerosene for distribution between April and June, the Kerala government is yet to fulfil its promise of supplying the fuel to all ration card holders. The impasse which stems from a deadlock over the proposed dealers' commission threatens to derail the State's first kerosene allotment in nearly two years. The Food and Civil Supplies department had planned to supply one litre of kerosene each to Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) card holders and half a litre each to Priority Households (PHH) and other ration card holders, at a fixed price of ₹63 a litre. Kerosene was last distributed through ration shops in the State at ₹83 a litre. Following discussions with representatives of kerosene dealers, the department had submitted a proposal that included a commission of ₹5 and transportation cost of ₹2 a litre. However, this was rejected by the Chief Minister's Office and the Finance department. Official sources maintained that the proposed plan would not have burdened the State exchequer as no subsidy was provided for kerosene sales. On the contrary, it would have generated ₹1.35 a litre in tax revenue. Anticipating the rollout, many dealers had also begun preparations by investing in tanker trucks and renewing expired distribution licences to lift the allocated stock from oil marketing companies. Despite the dwindling time-frame for distribution, Food and Civil Supplies Minister G.R. Anil remains hopeful. 'We are committed to lifting the full quota and completing distribution before the month ends. The allocation will not be lapsed at any cost,' he said. The Minister pointed out that the initial proposal was returned by the Chief Minister with instructions to reduce the dealer commission to ₹3 a litre. The revised proposal will be discussed with wholesale dealers to reach a resolution. The failure to find a solution within the month-end could result in the State losing the entire kerosene quota, potentially rendering the government's persistent efforts to achieve the allocation fruitless.
