The South African U20 rugby team hold the winner's trophy aloft after beating New Zealand in the World Rugby U20 Championship final in Rovigo on Saturday. Picture:Riley Norton and his all-conquering Junior Springboks will arrive back in South Africa mid-morning Monday as their country's newest heroes.
The Junior Boks won their first world title in 13 years when they defeated their New Zealand counterparts at the World Rugby U20 Championship in Rovigo, Italy on Saturday evening.
The win came just hours after the Springboks, currently two-time world champions, ended their midyear Test campaign with a comfortable victory against Georgia in Mbombela. They're next in action against Australia in the Rugby Championship.
The Junior Boks, who beat Australia, England and Scotland in pool play in Italy and Argentina in the semi-finals, edged their biggest rivals 23-15 in the final.
'Gees won it for us'
Coach Kevin Foote said his players' grit and spirt helped them get across the line.
'Defence is all about character, and there were moments when New Zealand were right on our line, but we held firm,' said Foote after the final.
'From a coach's perspective, you can't ask for more than that. It was a real South African defensive effort and gees (spirit) that won it for us.'
Foote, who took over as Junior Boks head coach at the end of last year, also described his winning squad as a special group of young players.
'I love our country and the Springboks, and I love working with this age group,' he said.
'Win for everyone back home'
'To see these young men grow from training in December to what they've achieved now is amazing. Being on this journey with them has been incredibly special, and I'll never take it for granted.'
Captain Norton, who led from the front, said: 'The ball was so slippery, and your fundamentals had to be spot on in these conditions, which was tough. There were a few handling errors due to the incredible humidity, and our jerseys were absolutely drenched in sweat, but I think we handled the conditions well. This win is for everyone who supported us back home.'
The Junior Boks captain also credited their intense training in Stellenbosch for helping them adapt to the Italian summer heat.
'We actually adapted very well to the local conditions, even though it was winter when we left Stellenbosch,' said Norton. 'That's thanks to our conditioning and the fact that we're used to training in similar summer weather back home.'

SA women's water polo side avoid wooden spoon at Aquatics Championships

Another international tournament, another forgetful series of results the South Africa's men's and women's water polo sides. Playing at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships in Singapore, the South African women's side were drawn in Group D alongside Spain, Great Britain and France. In their opening match, the South African side lost 23-4 (score by quarters: 9-1, 5-0, 4-2, 5-1) to Spain. That was followed by a 12-3 defeat against Great Britain (score by quarters: 5-0, 2-2, 4-1, 1-0) and a 13-6 loss to France (score by quarters: 4-1, 3-2, 3-3, 3-0). South Africa finished bottom of the group, scoring just 13 goals while conceding 48. The South African women's side then entered the 13th-16th place bracket where they lost 16-6 against Croatia. They then enjoyed their only success of the tournament in beating Singapore 8-4 (score by quarters: 3-0, 2-3, 2-1, 1-0) in the battle to avoid the wooden spoon. All-told, the South African women's side played five matches, lost four, won one, scored 27 goals and conceded 68 for an average loss of 14-5. Meanwhile, the South African men's side were drawn in Group A alongside Italy, Serbia and Romania. In their opening match, South Africa lost 27-3 (score by quarters: 8-0, 6-3, 4-0, 9-0) to Serbia. They followed that up with a 24-5 loss against Romania (score by quarters: 8-0, 3-1, 7-3, 6-1). In their final group stage match, the South African men's side were humbled 28-4 by Italy (score by quarters: 6-1, 9-0, 8-1, 5-2). South Africa finished bottom of the group, scoring just 12 goals while conceding 79. The South African men's side then entered the 13th-16th place bracket where they were outclassed 27-4 (score by quarters: 5-1, 10-1, 9-2, 3-0) by Australia. That defeat saw them contest the 15th-16th place playoff where they fell short 14-13 (score by quarters: 7-2, 3-4, 3-3, 1-4) against hosts Singapore. All-told, the South African men's side played five matches, lost all five, scored 29 goals and conceded 120 for an average loss of 24-6. Hopefully Minister of Sport Gayton McKenzie has a plan up his sleeve to turn around South Africa's water polo fortunes in time for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Black Caps encounter not just a practice game for Proteas

Proteas top-order batsman Rubin Hermann insists that their T20 Tri-Series game against New Zealand at the Harare Sports Complex on Tuesday is not a dead rubber, with the sides having already made Saturday's final. For the South African camp, it will be more than a dress rehearsal for the final against a Black Caps team who are yet to taste defeat, but more of a chance to fix their error-ridden performance against the same side last week. South Africa paid the price for a sloppy display with ball and then bat, slumping to a 21-run defeat in that showing. The bowlers let the Black Caps batsmen off the hook as they recovered from 74/5 to register a score of 173/5. Despite some thrilling batting from the top order, the Proteas' chase lacked consistency with too many batsmen throwing their wickets away.
