Pankaj Tripathi reveals he initially turned down Mimi until his wife convinced him to reconsider. The role went on to earn him a National Award.
With the return of the much-anticipated fourth season of Criminal Justice, actor Pankaj Tripathi once again steps into the role of Madhav Mishra, the endearing and sharp-witted lawyer navigating complex cases in the Indian judicial system. As the series premieres on OTT, Tripathi appeared in IMDb's exclusive segment 'The Essential Guide,' offering audiences a rare window into the key moments that shaped his career, the stories behind his most iconic performances, and what he sees as the pillars of his evolution in the digital entertainment space.
Reflecting on his time filming Raavan, Tripathi revealed, 'I enjoyed my feminine side while shooting for Raavan. During the filming, I wore a saree, with makeup, and sat on set for seven days. Even in my village, I had dressed up as a girl for the first play in my life. I haven't had the opportunity to play a character like that on screen again, but if it comes, the opportunity would be interesting."
He also shared a deeply personal story about a photo with his parents. 'In villages, there is no such culture of taking pictures. I had a mobile back then and requested a child nearby to click a picture of me with my parents. It was the first opportunity in my life when I got to place my hand on my father's shoulder, as such acts weren't followed in my village. In my house, no one knew what films were. No one used to read film magazines either and in fact there was no electricity there till 2016-17. I had told my family that I'm going to study theatre at NSD, post which I will become a professor. They thought I would get into teaching post my education there, so they agreed to let me go."
Speaking about how the industry came to acknowledge his versatility, Tripathi said, 'Neeraj Ghaywan helped me change my image from an aggressive man which I had got through Gangs of Wasseypur. People were surprised through Masaan that I can play a soft character as well. Both films – Gangs of Wasseypur and Masaan helped the industry realise that I am a versatile actor. Then Nil Battey Sannata helped the industry understand that I can even play a comic role too. I played a sincere school principal who wanted to help students move ahead in life. The film is a serious comedy. It was Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari's first film. She gave me the freedom to play the character the way I want and thus people got acquainted with the fact that I can do comedy as well."
Tripathi also recalled the moment he learned he had won a National Award for his work in Newton. 'I had a lot of fun filming Newton. Though I was fed up with lower back pain that I was dealing with at the time. Under the uniform I wore, I used to wear an orthopedic belt and kept it on during the entire filming. The film gave me my first National Award. I'll always be thankful and cherish that. I was with Saurabh Shukla and Anubhav Sinha, we were shooting in Lucknow. Saurabh sir then checked his phone and pointed it towards me saying that I won a National Award. I thought he was joking initially as we weren't aware that the announcement was that day. I went running to my room as I didn't have my phone. When I reached, there were around 30-35 missed calls. Some media folks, some from the fraternity. It was an emotional moment and I shed a few tears. I called my wife and informed her. It was always my dream to win a National Award for cinema, I was emotional for a few days thereafter."
Looking back on Bareilly Ki Barfi, Tripathi shared, 'I was quite fit then, so I had to wear a bodysuit under a sweater to look heavier. Many girls approached me after the film sharing that they made their fathers watch it and through the movie, their equation with them changed."
He also reflected on the characters that shaped his digital career. 'Guruji in Sacred Games, Kaleen Bhaiya in Mirzapur and Madhav Mishra in Criminal Justice. While acting, I feel that I should just keep thinking and it should transform into an expression that defines the character."
Finally, speaking about Mimi, a film he initially declined, Tripathi said, 'I initially didn't want to do Mimi. Dinesh Vijan and Laxman Utekar called my wife, asking her to convince me. I gave in and did the film. It was a great experience to be a part of this movie that is amongst the most viewed films on OTT. Kriti and I both received National Awards for the film. It wasn't just a supporting role, it was something else altogether."
As Madhav Mishra returns to our screens in Criminal Justice: Season 4, Tripathi's journey from village plays to national acclaim stands as a testament to perseverance, range, and the quiet power of letting characters speak for themselves. His stories not only reflect his humility and depth as an artist, but also highlight the subtle, transformative power of authenticity in Indian cinema.

Asha Negi opens up about challenging role in Criminal Justice 4, breaking her ‘girl-next-door' image with it

The gripping legal crime drama Criminal Justice has returned with its fourth season, once again featuring Pankaj Tripathi in his acclaimed role as lawyer Madhav Mishra. This time, the story revolves around a complex murder case within a troubled family, presenting three conflicting versions of the truth. Joining the cast are Zeeshan Ayyub, Surveen Chawla and Asha Negi, each playing pivotal roles in this intense and emotionally layered narrative. (Also Read: Asha Negi says she still gets 'so many gaalis from fans' for breakup with Rithvik Dhanjani) In an exclusive conversation with Hindustan Times, Asha Negi spoke about being a part of the hit franchise. She plays Roshni Saluja, Zeeshan's girlfriend, who is murdered. Asha opened up about her limited screen time in the series and why she chose to take on the role despite that. Asha revealed that it was the story and the nature of her character that drew her in, 'because for the longest time people have seen me play the girl next door and those kind of roles. And I really want to experiment and do something different. When this show came to me, we all know it's a great show, the character, even though the screen time is less, it has so much to do. It has a lot of layers, and it was very challenging to play this.' A post shared by Asha Negi (@ashanegi) She described the most demanding aspects of bringing Roshni to life and said, 'Most of the days were quite challenging because when you're working opposite actors like Zeeshan Ayub. I had so many scenes with him and he's such a fantastic actor. So when you have scenes with somebody like him, you have to buckle up and bring your A-game, right? You can't just do anything and get away with it. So most of the days were quite challenging and most of the scenes that I did were challenging, which is amazing because it also helps you push as an actor and helps you learn and grow so much.' Asha admitted she had initial doubts about accepting the role, 'I was sceptical that my character dies eventually, toh kya hi hoga iska (what will happen to her) but then I was told to read the screenplay and character brief and I was like maybe yeah, screen-time is less but there are times when the character is very impactful. So it's one of the most beautifully written characters. It was also so challenging, I felt like I didn't know if I'd be able to do this or not, it seems difficult to me. But whatever I had, I gave it my all.' She also shared that nervousness is a part of every project she does and added, 'I am always nervous before starting a project. I get sleepless nights when I am about to start a new project. So, even this time, I was nervous. But it was so fun, you also see your growth and how much you learnt.' Criminal Justice 4: A Family Matter premiered on JioHotstar on May 29. However, only three episodes have been released so far, leaving many fans disappointed. Directed by Rohan Sippy and produced by Applause Entertainment in association with BBC Studios India, new episodes of the show will drop every Thursday.

Rekhas Iconic Film Umrao Jaan To Be Re-Released In Theatres On THIS Date

Mumbai: Evergreen actress Rekha's iconic film 'Umrao Jaan' will be re-released in theatres. Directed by Muzaffar Ali, 'Umrao Jaan' has been restored in 4K resolution by NFDC- NFAI. The makers have now given a chance to audience to witness the magic of the timeless classic once again from June 27. To mark this momentous re-release, Muzaffar Ali has also planned to unveil a limited-edition coffee table book that offers a rare behind-the-scenes look into the making of Umrao Jaan, as per a press note. Featuring never-before-seen photographs, costume sketches, calligraphy, poetry, and personal anecdotes from the set, the book is both a collector's item and a deeply reflective tribute to the film's artistic vision. Recalling working in the cult film, Rekha said, "Umrao Jaan is not just a film I acted in -- she lives within me, breathes through me, even now. At the time, none of us could have imagined the timelessness of the film, the way it would gently etch itself into the soul of Indian cinema. To see it return to the big screen is like watching an old love letter being opened by a new generation. My heart is full." Muzaffar Ali also expressed his excitement about the re-release. He shared, "Umrao Jaan was not just a film--it was a journey into the soul of a lost culture, a forgotten tehzeeb. Through her pain, poetry, and grace, we tried to resurrect the elegance of an era where love and longing spoke in verse. I had actors who brought a lot of heft to their characters, and then there was Rekha, who lived Umrao Jaan and truly immortalised it. I am thrilled that the film is back on the big screen for a whole new generation to discover a time and culture that's very much a part of our being." Rekha won the National Award for her impeccable performance in the film as a courtesan-poetess in 19th-century Lucknow. Her graceful dance performance on 'Dil Cheez Kya Hai' is still admired and remembered by filmophiles. Screenings will begin across select PVR INOX cinemas in multiple cities from June 27th.
