Mysuru: The 'My School, My Responsibility' scheme, launched by the department of literacy and school education, received a good response in Mysuru district. The dept collected Rs 2 crore in donations from senior students for the improvement of the schools they studied in after forming the senior students' association.
CM Siddaramaiah promoted the scheme in his home district, by contributing Rs 10 lakh from his pocket for the development of the schools where he completed his primary education — Siddaramanahundi and Kuppegala Schools, Mysuru taluk. The scheme emphasises that each student has a role to play in ensuring their schools are positive and productive.
The department has already constituted more than 2,000 such alumni associations in about 2,000 lower and primary schools across the district.
Some students working abroad or outside the state transferred funds to the dept's bank accounts opened for this purpose after reviewing the status of the schools they studied in.
The department received tables, chairs, other furniture, dining tables, computers, and projectors for smart classes. It also received funds for school repairs, construction of compounds, setting up drinking water purifier systems, establishment of libraries, laptops, benches, notebooks, and for painting and modernisation of the schools.
The nodal officer, Pushpalatha MB, said that the formation of alumni associations is not only helping govt schools with their upgradation and empowerment of students, but also attracting students to govt schools with improved infrastructure. It also helped the department increase enrolments in school, improve the quality of education, attendance, and comprehensive development of the schools.
Speaking to TOI, DDPI Javaregowda said the My School, My Responsibility scheme received an overwhelming response after its launch in Mysuru.
Siddaramaiah donated Rs 10 lakh for the school he studied in, under the scheme, encouraging the development of state-run schools.

Ex-CM Vijay Rupani's identity confirmed at crash site, body to be taken to Rajkot

Three days after the catastrophic plane crash, the body of former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani has been identified at the plane crash site after DNA testing. A large team of forensic experts have been working around the clock to identify the bodies by matching the DNA of the deceased with samples collected from their relatives. The confirmation of Vijay Rupani's identification was announced by Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi while speaking to the media this morning. The last rites of Vijay Rupani will be done in Rajkot, where his family will decide on the cremation procedure. Rishikesh Patel, Gujarat Health Minister, speaking to IANS, said the state government will facilitate all the arrangements after the family decides on the funeral proceedings. 'Gujarat CM Bhupendrabhai Patel and Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi visited late Vijaybhai Rupani ji's residence today and told the family members that his DNA has been confirmed. His family will take call on last rites and final stage preparations for cremation. After consultation with them, all arrangements will be done,' he said. Reenaben Patel, a legislator, also confirmed that Vijay Rupani's body will be taken to Rajkot, where a lot of well-wishers and supporters of the former CM have been waiting to pay their tributes and bid a final goodbye. Former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani was onboard the ill-fated Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, operating as flight AI171 from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on June 12, that crashed minutes after take-off, killing 241 of the 242 people on board. Only one passenger had a miraculous escape from the flight, while all others were killed. Former CM was flying to London to meet his wife and daughter. Notably, the DNA-matching is a complex medical and legal process and involves layers of verification. It's only after an elaborate set of tests and confirmation of DNA samples, families are called up and asked to collect the bodies of their loved ones. In some cases, the analysis is repeated due to insufficient DNA material. The identification process takes up to 72 hours, depending on the condition of the remains.

Alcohol industry asks Maharashtra govt to rethink excise duty hike, calls for deliberations

Expressing concern over the increase in the excise duty on Indian made foreign liquor (IMFL) by up to 50 per cent by the Maharashtra government, the Confederation of Indian Alcoholic Beverage Companies (CIABC), the apex body of the Indian Alcoholic Beverage Industry, has urged the state government to reconsider the hike and hold deliberations with all stakeholders immediately. Sources in the excise department said the industry body was trying to protect its interest, but declined to comment on any possibility of a rollback. The state cabinet on Tuesday approved a hike in excise duty on IMFL, country liquor, and imported alcohol. The decision is expected to raise the state's annual excise collection by approximately Rs 14,000 crore as the prices of IMFL and premium foreign liquor brands are likely to increase by 50-80 per cent. The CIABC claimed that while the intent behind the proposed hike may be to enhance revenue collections by Rs 14,000 crore, the actual outcome may be contrary–driven by declining sales, rising illicit trade, and border leakages. The long-term impact could be deeply detrimental, not only for industry and employment, but also for public safety and overall state revenues. Stating that the CIABC had already written to the Maharashtra government urging it to start a consultative process with all stakeholders before releasing any final gazette notification, Anant S Iyer, Director-General, CIABC, said the hike in excise duty was projected to push maximum retail prices up by as much as 85 per cent, a step that could severely disrupt the market, erode the competitiveness of national brands, and jeopardise the availability of legitimate alcoholic beverages in the state. 'Such an unprecedented escalation in duties poses a serious deterrence to consumer access of established and reputed brands, compelling a shift toward lower-category products. This poses a serious threat to the stability of the IMFL industry in the state…such a move will have a far-reaching adverse impact,' Iyer said. He warned that higher MRPs often create a vacuum filled by illegal operators. The IMFL industry contributes approximately 60 per cent of the total excise revenue of the state.
