Hit Netflix movie racks up a staggering 23 million views in a week

Caroline Westbrook Published May 15, 2025 2:17pm Link is copied Comments It's that time of the week again, when we get to find out which movies have been lighting up the world of Netflix subscribers. Whether you're in the mood for a feel-good story, a compelling documentary or even a tense, suspense-filled action thriller, there's no shortage of options in this week's global top 10 chart. And it's also a week which sees non-English language movies making their mark with a whole brace of films from across the world racking up the millions alongside the Hollywood blockbusters. Let's get into it, shall we? Kicking off with this adaptation of Delia Owens' best-seller, Where the Crawdads Sing tells the story of Kya (Daisy Edgar-Jones), a young woman who grows up isolated in the marshes of North Carolina (although the movie was shot in Louisiana). When a local man is found dead, Kya becomes the prime suspect, leading to a gripping courtroom battle (Picture: Sony Pictures/Everett/REX/Shutterstock) Given how popular the Twilight saga was in the Noughties, a film version of Stephenie Meyer's book series seemed almost inevitable. Now the original film is making its presence known in the Netflix charts, with Kristen Stewart as teenager Bella Swan, and Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen - the vampire she falls in love with. The perfect nostalgia trip for your inner Noughties teenager (Picture: Summit Entertainment) The first of this week's new entries takes a deep dive into the world of Colombian singer-songwriter Karol G - aka Carolina Giraldo Navarro. The documentary sees the Grammy-award-winning star, considered one of the most influential figures in Reggaeton and urban pop, discuss her rise to stardom while navigating a sold-out stadium tour and releasing a new album (Picture: Netflix) Directed by Gareth Evans, known for The Raid, this one stars Tom Hardy as Detective Walker, a shady cop forced to navigate a city's criminal underworld after a drug deal goes awry. Expect plenty of brutal, visceral action in this one - including a memorable scene where Hardy's Walker uses a harpoon gun in a pretty gruesome way - and a plot which borders on the ridiculous. But it's still a lot of fun (Picture: Netflix) Another feature-length documentary now, this one focusing on the case of Jason Corbett, an Irish widower who was killed in a violent attack at his home in 2015. His American au-pair Molly Martens - whom he was in a relationship with - and her father, FBI agent Thomas Martens, claimed self-defence, with Molly pleading no contest and her dad pleading guilty to voluntary manslaughter. But what really happened that night? This film, which looks at both sides of the case, aims to find the answers (Picture: Netflix) Another crime thriller now and a 2019 sequel to Spike Lee's 2006 hit starring Denzel Washington, Clive Owen, Jodie Foster and Chiwitel Ajiofor. However, none of them appear in this belated follow-up in which an NYPD hostage negotiator and a federal agent join forces to rescue a group of tourists held hostage during a siege at the US Federal Reserve (Picture: Netflix) This charming movie with an all-star cast has taken Netflix by storm in its first three days, notching up more than 15 million views in the process. It tells the true story of Joe Scarvarella, the Staten Island restaurateur who honours his late mother by opening an Italian restaurant staffed by grandmothers - and features an all-star cast with the likes of Susan Sarandon and Lorraine Bracco on board. In any other week this would have already been your number one movie. But this is not any other week... (Picture: Jeong Park/Netflix) Pitching in at number three with an impressive number of views is this French thriller, the latest in a series of films which also includes 2020's Lost Bullet and Lost Bullet 2 (2022). This one sees a return for Lino (Alban Lenoir), an ex-convict and getaway driver who builds cars for criminal purposes. Except in this sequel he is out for revenge (Picture: Dupuy/Netflix) Not to be confused with the recent kidfluencer documentary of the same name, Bad Influence - this week's highest new entry - is a Spanish thriller which has proven to be a huge hit with viewers. The plot sees an ex-con hired to protect a wealthy heiress from a stalker, but as they grow closer the chemistry between them becomes impossible to ignore
(Picture: Netflix) Still pulling in viewers by the veritable truckload - and earning it a second week in the top spot - is this German action-thriller. Jeanne Goursaud takes the lead as Sara Wulf, a former Special Forces soldier. When her son disappears during a visa appointment at the US Consulate in Frankfurt, Sara uncovers a conspiracy involving corrupt officials and a cover-up tied to a past military mission of hers. The film's been picking up comparisons to Die Hard - and it's certainly pretty intense stuff

Jenna Ortega channels her inner Wednesday Addams in an eery gothic dress as she attends Paris premiere for the Netflix hit's second season

Jenna Ortega channeled her inner Wednesday Addams in a distressed gothic dress as attended the Paris premiere for the Netflix 's hit's second season in the French capital on Thursday. In the show, she plays the wily yet reserved protagonist who always manages to keep her cool under pressure. And Jenna channelled her starring character as she stepped out in a brown floor-length gown which featured a daringly high slit. Her gown featured a ruffled lining around the plunging neckline as she showcased her petite frame with a matching belt. She added inched to her statuesque frame as the actress slipped into a pair of towering brown platform heels. To accessorise, she kept in theme with her gothic ensemble as she wore an oversized cross necklace. The gothic comedy, which follows the antics of Wednesday Addams (played by Jenna), debuted on the streaming service in November 2022. It was quickly renewed for a second series in January 2023. It is one in a series of takes over the years on The Addams Family, the eccentric fictional old-money clan, famously macabre and gothic in manner and look. The second series of the Emmy-winning programme, executive produced and often directed by horror icon Tim Burton, 66, is set for release on 6 August 2025. And now, it has been announced that not only will Wednesday be back for a third series, but a spin-off programme is currently under discussion, according to Hollywood Reporter. Fans were delighted to hear the fate of the beloved show has been secured, taking to social media to express their excitement. Catherine Zeta-Jones posted on Instagram confirming the news: 'When Wednesday comes a better day. 'Wednesday season three. It's official... we shall return.' Her gown featured a ruffled lining around the plunging neckline as she showcased her petite frame with a matching belt One fan wrote in the comments section: 'And for many more seasons.'; 'I love this because then they can start filming soon and it won't be such a long pause between seasons! Or that's the hope!' The second series was announced in January 2023, but by the time it comes out later this year, it will have been more than two years in the making. The first series of Wednesday follows the titular troublemaker character after she is expelled and transferred to Nevermore Academy, a school for monstrous outcasts. Her cool, creepy manner and rebellious streak often see her in trouble and struggling to fit in. But after she discovers she is a psychic like her mother and applies her skills to solving a local murder case, she soon finds her stride. The programme boasts an impressive regular cast, with Game of Thrones' Gwendoline Christie and Narcos' Luis Guzman also starring. They feature as Nevermore headteacher Larissa Weems and Wednesday's father, Gomez Addams, respectively. The upcoming second series looks to be even more star-studded, with Lady Gaga, Joanna Lumley, Steve Buscemi, and Thandiwe Newton also joining the cast. Star Jenna and director Tim also worked together on Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the 2024 sequel to the original 1988 horror film starring Winona Ryder. And they have now told all about what fans can expect from the upcoming second series and the newly announced third instalment. Scream queen Jenna, who rose to fame in slashers Scream, X and Scream VI, was embroiled in controversy in recent months for comments she made during a podcast interview. She said she spent her time on the show 'changing lines' and 'had to put my foot down' because 'everything I had to play did not make sense for the character'. Jenna said she felt terrible about this and never meant it that way, simply meaning to say she improvised a lot and was permitted to. Tim sympathised with her, feeling the comments had been interpreted in a way she had not meant. But the pair revealed that after these events, Jenna is now a producer on the show. Co-creator Alfred Gough, who made the show with Miles Millar, said this made sense, as she is already so involved in every part of the show, as well as giving notes on the script, in a way he praised. Wednesday's first series pulled in a whopping 252million viewers globally, making it Netflix's biggest English-language series of all time. Alfred has now teased a spin-off: 'It's something we're definitely noodling; there are other characters we can look at.' Netflix chief content officer Bela Bajaria, meanwhile, added: 'There's a lot to explore in the Addams Family.' New cast member Joanna Lumley previously told Netflix news site Tudum: 'There's always something thrilling about working for Tim Burton. 'His whole mind takes him to a different world, and the world that they've created here for Wednesday and Nevermore and the family is just intoxicating. 'It's wonderful. I get to wear many, many huge wigs, one on top of the other — and lots of quite constraining clothes, so I love it.'

Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight set to write next James Bond movie

The British screenwriter Steven Knight has reportedly been tapped to write the next James Bond movie. According to Deadline, Knight recently met the director Denis Villeneuve and landed the job after various other writers were also considered. Villeneuve is currently filming the third Dune instalment. The 65-year-old writer is best known for co-creating the long-running gameshow Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? and creating the hit crime series Peaky Blinders. His other small-screen credits include Taboo, A Thousand Blows and The Veil starring Elisabeth Moss. On the big screen, Knight was written the scripts for the acclaimed dramas Eastern Promises, Dirty Pretty Things, Locke and Spencer. He also wrote and directed the sci-fi thriller Serenity starring Matthew McConaughey, which received negative reviews. The Guardian's Charles Bramesco called it 'magnificently terrible'. His upcoming credits include the Peaky Blinders movie The Immortal Man and period drama series House of Guinness for Netflix. When talking about The Immortal Man in 2023, Knight name-checked 007. 'The biggest difference between a film and TV series is the budget,' he said to the Mirror. 'When you do stuff for TV, you often have to ask people to imagine it. But with a film, you can really do it. You can blow stuff up. Will Tommy be giving James Bond a run for his money? Maybe. There are parallels. We always thought of Peaky as very cinematic, so we are finally finding a screen big enough for what we want to do.' While the role of James Bond remains up in the air, a June report claimed that Tom Holland, Harris Dickinson and Jacob Elordi were top of the wishlist. The news came just after the Dune and Arrival director Villeneuve was officially attached. 'I intend to honour the tradition and open the path for many new missions to come,' he said in a statement. 'This is a massive responsibility, but also, incredibly exciting for me and a huge honour.' The 26th Bond film will follow Daniel Craig's final outing, No Time to Die, which made over $774m at the global box office. Earlier this year, in a reported $1bn deal, Amazon MGM bought the rights to gain 'creative control' of the franchise. This week, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy mentioned the film during a Q3 earnings call. 'James Bond is in the hands of one of today's greatest film-makers,'he said. 'We cannot wait to get started on 007's next adventure.'
