Hyder Shah, father of a 30-year-old 'ponywallah' who was killed while trying to snatch a rifle from a terrorist during the attack in Pahalgam, said he felt proud because of his son's sacrifice to save tourists he ferried to the meadow.
His son Syed Adil Hussain Shah's heroic act caught national attention after Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah visited his funeral on Wednesday to participate in a prayer (Fatiha) with hundreds of mourners. Shah was laid to rest at his ancestral graveyard at Hapatnard village in Pahalgam.

The deceased's father stood inconsolable when the chief minister hugged him to share grief and express solidarity. 'I am very proud of him and his sacrifice. I am alive because of the pride I am feeling. Otherwise, I would have died the moment I saw his young, dead body. I am happy because of his bravery. Some people were saved because of him, and I am proud of it,' Hyder Shah told ANI on Thursday.
Syed Naushad, the deceased's brother, said that Shah had gone to Pahalgam for work, where terrorists shot him thrice in his chest. "He used to take tourists on pony rides to Baisaran. On Tuesday, when terrorists attacked tourists, my brother tried to stop them. A tourist whose father was killed in the attack told me about the heroic act of my brother at SMHS hospital,' he said.
Abdullah hailed Shah's courageous act to defend tourists he had ferried on horseback from the parking area to Baisaran meadow. 'Met his grieving family and assured them of full support — Adil (Shah) was the sole breadwinner, and his extraordinary bravery and sacrifice will forever be remembered. We are with them and will help them as much as we can,' he wrote on X.

Shah's funeral prayers were led by a local, Ghulam Hassan, who lauded the pony ride operator's sacrifice. 'He will be rewarded by Allah for his deeds. I pray nobody sees their loved ones die like this. We should always be ready to die for others, whether a Sikh, Pandit or a Muslim. That is what our religion teaches us,' Hassan said.

Bizman's aide held for killing 62-yr-old over property row

New Delhi: A week after a burnt body was found in northwest Delhi's Alipur, Delhi Police has arrested the business partner of the deceased. According to police, the victim was allegedly putting pressure on his partner to sell a property, which ultimately led to the murder. Police said that on May 2, a partially burnt body was discovered. During an inspection of the crime scene, an empty cartridge was recovered. Efforts were made to identify the deceased, and a case of murder was registered. The deceased was later identified as Santosh Kumar, alias Masterji (62), a resident of Nathupura. Deputy commissioner of police (Outer North) Hareshwar V Swami said that after analysing hundreds of CCTV footage, examining multiple call detail records of suspects, interrogations, and relying on local intelligence, one suspect—Jagarnath Shah, alias Lala—was apprehended. Shah was last seen with the deceased. Police said, Shah, who was also the deceased's business partner, confessed to the crime upon interrogation. "Shah has been arrested. He disclosed that the deceased was putting pressure on him to sell his property in Swaroop Nagar. The weapon used in the crime, the vehicle used to commit the offence, and an empty petrol bottle have been recovered," police said. According to police, on June 1, Shah took Santosh from his office in Swaroop Vihar for a drive in his XUV car, under the pretence of discussing property matters. He drove around various locations in Delhi, searching for a secluded place to commit the murder. Around 8 pm, they reached the Mukhmelpur-Hiranki Pushta Road, a deserted area. There, Shah allegedly shot Santosh in the head and set the body on fire in an attempt to destroy evidence before fleeing the scene. On the way, he disposed of the weapon and the inflammable bottle, both of which were later recovered by the police.

LDF & UDF trade barbs over support

Kozhikode: Welfare Party's support for UDF and PDP's backing of LDF have triggered a sharp political clash between rival fronts in Nilambur as they compete for electoral gains. Welfare Party is the political wing of Jamaat-e-Islami (JEI), while People's Democratic Party (PDP) is led by Abdul Nazar Madani, an accused in the 1998 Bengaluru serial blasts case. JEI and PDP announced their support for UDF and LDF respectively on Monday. CPM state secretary MV Govindan termed JEI a communal organization with global ties and an agenda to create an Islamic theocratic state. He slammed UDF for accepting JEI's support but defended the LDF's acceptance of PDP's backing, claiming PDP had suffered mistreatment in Kerala. Govindan slammed UDF for aligning with JEI, calling it 'a coalition of communal elements'. "They've followed this pattern in several elections, including Palakkad bypoll. UDF has become an alliance of communal forces and will face the consequences," he added. When asked about LDF accepting PDP's support, Govindan said PDP does not aim to establish a theocratic state. CPM leader Elamaram Kareem also attacked UDF, saying JEI promotes an ideology that supports terrorism. "How can the Congress claim to be secular while joining hands with them?" he asked. Opposition leader VD Satheesan accused CPM of double standards, saying it had previously held talks with JEI and accepted its support in past elections. "How is it okay for LDF to get support from Jamaat-e-Islami but not UDF? Those who criticize Welfare Party's support for UDF stay silent when PDP backs LDF. People will see through CPM's double standards—they once called JEI's support 'hopeful and exciting'. So why is Congress being targeted for accepting it now?" he asked. Satheesan also reminded Govindan of chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan's earlier comments about JEI, in which he described it as "one of the Muslim organizations with a clear political stand on national and international issues." Satheesan said that in all six elections he contested, JEI and Welfare Party had backed the LDF candidate. He added that after 2019, they shifted to support the Congress at the national level to fight communalism. "When they supported CPM, they were called secularists. Now that they support UDF, they're branded communalists? This is typical CPM hypocrisy," he said. BJP leader K Surendran accused UDF and LDF of seeking support from religious extremist and terror-linked groups just to win elections, warning that such alliances would harm society.

"US constantly bullying India in name of trade, Modi government is silent": Congress' Supriya Shrinate

New Delhi [India], June 10 (ANI): Congress leader Supriya Shrinate on Tuesday said the Donald Trump administration is constantly 'bullying' India in the name of trade, adding that the Modi government is silent against the threats being made by the United States. Speaking to ANI, Shrinate also pointed out that Indian students are facing issues with the admission procedure in the US, highlighting that a huge visa backlog has been created. 'Our students' visas are not being processed, a backlog is being created. The reality is that the admissions of our students are being cancelled. Another reality is that 682 Indians were deported to India, handcuffed, in military planes by America. The reality is that Donald Trump has taken credit for the ceasefire 12 times. Again and again, he says that he threatened India in the name of trade. I feel that the United States is constantly bullying and insulting us, and the Modi government is silent,' Shrinate told ANI. Earlier on May 31, US President Donald Trump claimed credit for brokering the cessation of hostilities between India and Pakistan, asserting that he used trade as a negotiation tactic. Speaking at the Oval Office during an event marking Elon Musk's departure from his advisory role at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), Trump said, 'We stopped India and Pakistan from fighting. I believe that could have turned out into a nuclear disaster, and I want to thank the leaders of India and Pakistan, and I want to thank my people. Also, we talk trade, and we say we can't trade with people who are shooting at each other and potentially using nuclear weapons. They're great leaders in those countries, and they understood and they agreed.' Meanwhile, India has clarified that the cessation of hostilities between India and Pakistan took place on May 10 following contacts between the two DGMOs and while there were conversations between Indian and US leaders on the evolving situation since Operation Sindoor was launched, the issue of trade or tariff did not come up in any of those discussions. (ANI) On video of an Indian student handcuffed and pinned to the floor at an airport in the United States that went viral on social media., Shrinate said, 'He is a young student who went to America with the hope of building his future. But the way he was treated -- the way he was slammed and thrashed, the way he was handcuffed, the way he was trampled under boots, the way he was deported -- why is he being treated like an animal? This is happening to our students continuously.' In this regard, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh on Tuesday criticised the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led NDA government and accused it of 'failing' to protect and safeguard the dignity of India and Indians abroad.
