KUALA LUMPUR: United Overseas Bank (Malaysia) Bhd (UOB) announced its role as joint coordinator, mandated lead arranger, underwriter, and bookrunner in one of Southeast Asia's largest data centre financing deals.
The landmark transaction, which involves a dual currency loan of RM15bil, is also the largest syndicated green Islamic facility in Malaysia.
The deal supports DayOne's transformative data centre development in the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ). UOB arranged the financing in syndication with six other banks.
UOB Malaysia chief executive officer Ng Wei Wei said the landmark transaction reflects the bank's commitment to supporting infrastructure projects that advance sustainable digital transformation across Asean.
'By jointly financing DayOne's data centre in the JS-SEZ, we are not only supporting Malaysia's digital economy but also strengthening the connectivity backbone that enables businesses from both sides of the Causeway to thrive in the digital age.
'We remain committed to the continuous support and development of the JS-SEZ as a strategic economic corridor that enhances regional connectivity and drives sustainable growth,' she said.
Headquartered in Singapore, DayOne is a global leader in digital infrastructure, with a growing footprint across tier-one and emerging markets, including Singapore, Johor (Malaysia), Batam (Indonesia), Greater Bangkok, Hong Kong, Tokyo, and beyond.
The financing facility enables DayOne to refinance existing loans while funding new data centre developments, creating a stable foundation for long-term growth and optimal capital allocation across their expanding regional portfolio.

Macquarie eyes investments in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: Global fund manager Macquarie Asset Management has expressed interest in investing across various sectors in Malaysia, Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said. He said Macquarie, one of the world's leading investors, sees strong potential in areas such as infrastructure and renewable energy, in line with the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 (NIMP2030) and the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR). "Their interest shows that Malaysia remains a top investment destination, particularly in high-technology and green sectors. "Their commitment further strengthens our efforts to position Malaysia as a sustainable and competitive regional hub," he said in a post on today. Tengku Zafrul added that he also held productive discussions with Macquarie on the matter. "I am confident that collaborations like this will drive economic growth and create more quality job opportunities for Malaysians," he said. Separately, Tengku Zafrul said he also met with leading global fund managers, including GIC, UBS and Manulife IM at the Invest Malaysia conference organised by Bursa Malaysia and Macquarie in Singapore. He said the discussions aimed to promote Malaysia as a neutral and resilient investment hub in ASEAN. "Among the key highlights we presented were the positive progress of NIMP2030 and the National Semiconductor Strategy (NSS). "We also shared updates on investment inflows, including RM63 billion secured in semiconductor investments. Malaysia to push for substantial conclusion of DEFA negotiations at AEM meeting

SINGAPORE: Malaysia will push for a "substantial conclusion" of the Asean Digital Economy Framework Agreement (DEFA) at the Asean Economic Ministers' (AEM) Meeting from Sept 24 to 26 in Kuala Lumpur, said Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz. Before the meeting in Malaysia's capital, the ministers will also convene at a special meeting on DEFA on Aug 28 via video conference, also to be chaired by Tengku Zafrul. "We will push for DEFA because it's important for Asean, especially Malaysia, as it is one of our PEDs (Priority Economic Deliverables) to be delivered this year. "The good news is that we have completed the negotiations for two PEDs, which are the Asean-China Free Trade Agreement (ACFTA) and the Asean Trade in Goods Agreement (ATIGA), that are targeted to be signed in October," he told Bernama after participating in the Bursa Malaysia Invest Malaysia session as part of the Macquarie Asean Conference here. Tengku Zafrul stated that the DEFA, the first of its kind in any regional framework, will enable small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to become part of a more inclusive Asean intra-trade ecosystem. He noted that of the 18 PEDs, half fall under the AEM purview, and he is confident they will be able to deliver all of them before the end of Malaysia's Asean Chairmanship. The minister also noted that his team was in New Delhi last week for negotiations on the Asean-India Trade in Goods Agreement (AITIGA) Review, and he was informed that there had been some positive progress towards its substantial conclusion. In his keynote address, the minister said that Malaysia, as Asean Chair, is also pushing to unlock greater investability through deliverables such as the adoption of the Asean Sustainable Investment Guidelines (ASIG) and by catalysing access to financing for a just transition and climate resilience in the region. He added that Asean is also striving to make its capital markets more sustainable, connected, and inclusive, and has made significant strides, from expanding green finance instruments to attracting green investments. "As the region continues to invest in sustainable infrastructure, during our year as Chair, Malaysia also hopes to pave the way for sector-specific initiatives, including an Asean EV Roadmap, a Minerals Development Action Plan, and an Asean Framework for an Integrated Semiconductor Supply Chain," he said.

MITI Hopes For Greater Support For Industry-based SMEs In Budget 2026 -- Tengku Zafrul

BUSINESS By Nur Ashikin Abdul Aziz SINGAPORE, Aug 18 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) is hopeful that small and medium enterprises (SMEs) will be appropriately supported to better prepare them for export and enter new markets, as part of its Budget 2026 wishlist. Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said that, given the current geopolitical uncertainties, industries and companies require policies that help them navigate the evolving global environment. 'Big companies can have the funding to gain market access, but SMEs and the supply chains supporting them, for example, need some support to enable participation in expos,' he told Bernama after attending the Bursa Malaysia Invest Malaysia session at the Macquarie 16th ASEAN Conference here. The minister added that MITI is also looking to support Malaysian companies in deepening their linkages within industrial ecosystems and increasing their level of sophistication in response to the complex geoeconomic and geopolitical backdrop. 'Their fundamentals have to be strong. They must invest in artificial intelligence (AI), be more productive, attract better talent, and strengthen their research and development (R&D) and innovation systems. 'All of this is necessary to enhance the capabilities of our companies -- our SMEs and our large local firms -- especially in the semiconductor sector,' he said. In his keynote address, Tengku Zafrul said he believed that Budget 2026, to be tabled in October, will support national priorities already set out in key policy frameworks. These include MITI's New Industrial Master Plan 2030, the National Semiconductor Strategy, the National Energy Transition Roadmap, and the Green Investment Strategy.
