New Bentley EXP 15 hints at the brand's luxurious electric future

TimesLIVE10-07-2025
Bentley has unveiled a striking ultraluxury electric concept car with three seats and an interior that artfully blends mechanical and digital elements.
Revealed at Bentley's new design studio in Crewe, England, the EXP 15 is not intended for production but hints at the British brand's future styling direction.
The EXP 15 takes inspiration from Bentley's early 20th century grand tourer heritage and interprets it in a modern way. The concept car has an iconic upright grille, long 'endless' bonnet and rearward cabin reminiscent of the 1930 Bentley Speed Six Gurney Nutting Sportsman coupé, often known as the 'Blue Train'. This famous Bentley was used by then-company chair Woolf Barnato to beat a luxury express train (Le Train Bleu) in a race from Cannes to Calais in France.
The concept has modern exterior surfacing, hi-tech lighting and active aerodynamic elements. Its big party trick, however, is it has three seats and three doors to provide extra legroom for the special few and has in-cabin storage for pets and hand luggage.
'Twin coach doors and part of the panoramic roof open upwards on the passenger side to allow smoother entry and exit via a passenger side seat that can swivel 45° outwards. This allows passengers to disembark with dignity for that perfect Instagram shot,' according to Darren Day, Bentley's head of interior design.
'If you look at the car we built for Her Majesty the Queen, it was designed around the aperture of the door and 'the art of arrival'. It was important for us to create that feeling here, too,' said Day.

The three-position passenger seat can be moved forward next to the driver in Co-pilot mode, slid back to the rear seat or reclined for Relax mode.
When the car is parked, the boot space can be used as upmarket picnic seating. Under the large rear hatch are two small seats that can deploy with a fridge stocked with cold drinks, which can slide back from the rear seats for luxury tailgate parties.
The cabin mixes physical features with futuristic digital elements that can be brought to the fore or melt away into the background. This includes an update of Bentley's Rotating Dashboard, which can reveal an infotainment screen or rotate back to a solid dashboard surface.
The boot can be transformed into a seating area.

The EXP 15's full-width dashboard can act as a digital interface for infotainment or switch off to reveal a veneered wood surface visible underneath the glass. Also mounted behind the screen is a clock-like device with multiple movable and illuminated fingers — which Bentley refers to as the 'Mechanical Marvel' as it can indicate the car's direction of travel, the state of its electric charge and much more — or just be a centrepiece to look upon.
Robin Page, Bentley director of design, said: 'We think people are going to get fed up with a fully digital experience and are pining for physical mechanical elements. By combining the two, you can get the best of both worlds. It's almost like wearing a beautiful mechanical watch on one wrist and a digital watch on the other.
Page added that the concept car positioned the brand's new design language and also tested where the market was going.
'It's clear that SUVs are a growing segment and we understand the GT market — through four generations of the Continental GT — but the trickiest segment is the sedan, because it's changing. Some customers want a classic 'three-box' sedan shape, others a 'one-box' design and others again something more elevated. So this was a chance for us to talk to people and get a feeling.'
EXP 15 is conceived as having a fully electric, all-wheel drive powertrain with a long range and quick recharging speeds, but Bentley gave no further technical details.

New Range Rover Sport SV Carbon edition revealed

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has unveiled the new Range Rover Sport SV Carbon, a lighter and more performance-focused flagship to be sold alongside the recently announced SV and SV Black variants. The British carmaker describes it as 'the ultimate expression of lightweight performance, featuring carbon finishes and exclusive colours'. Available in four standard exterior colours, along with a broader selection from the curated SV Premium Palette, the SV Carbon stands out with a Forged Carbon Exterior Pack and lightweight 23-inch forged alloy wheels paired with Anodised Black brake calipers. An exposed carbon fibre bonnet is optional, as are 23-inch carbon fibre wheels that reduce the vehicle's weight by 76kg, improving acceleration, handling and ride quality. Buyers can also upgrade to a carbon ceramic brake package, featuring eight piston SV calipers finished in blue, yellow, carbon bronze or black. Inside, four interior themes are offered with Windsor leather seats in Ebony, Rosewood and Ebony or Light Cloud and Ebony. A leather free option combines Cinder Grey and Ebony using perforated Ultrafabrics material. Forged Carbon detailing features on the seat backs and dashboard with a Twill Carbon finish also available. Other unique touches include Extended Moonlight Chrome accents, SV branded illuminated treadplates and Body and Soul Seat technology — an audio system that allows front occupants to 'feel' the sound. Power comes from a BMW-sourced, 4.4 l twin-turbocharged mild hybrid petrol V8 producing 467kW and 750Nm. This enables a 0-100km/h sprint in 3.7 seconds and a top speed of 290km/h. Underpinning the vehicle is JLR's sophisticated 6D Dynamics suspension system, which includes hydraulic interlinked dampers, height adjustable air springs and a 48V pitch control system that replaces traditional anti-roll bars. Custom SV calibrations have been applied to the intelligent all-wheel drive, all-wheel steering, torque vectoring by braking, configurable dynamics and active locking rear differential. These changes aim to enhance responsiveness and deliver a more focused driving experience. The Range Rover Sport SV Carbon will make its global debut at Range Rover House during Monterey Car Week on August 13. Local availability is expected from late 2025, with pricing starting at R3,822,300.

PB Balaji succeeds Adrian Mardell as new CEO of JLR

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), the British arm of Tata Motors, has appointed PB Balaji as CEO from November 2025. He succeeds Adrian Mardell, who retired after three years as CEO and 35 years with the company. Balaji has served as the group CFO of the Tata Motors Group since November 2017 and has 32 years of experience in the automotive and consumer goods industries, across finance and supply chain functions. He has led global teams in multicultural environments in Mumbai, London, Singapore and Switzerland, and has been closely associated with the successful transformation of the Tata Motors Group. Tata chair Natarajan Chandrasekaran said: 'I would like to thank Adrian for the stellar turnaround of JLR and for delivering record results. I am delighted to appoint Balaji as the incoming CEO of the company. He has been associated with the company for many years and is familiar with the company, its strategy and has been working with the JLR leadership team.' During Mardell's tenure, JLR posted its highest profit in a decade, eliminated £5bn (R118.8bn) in debt and posted its strongest operational performance to date. It also made progress in its Reimagine Strategy, which aims to transform the company into a modern luxury business focused on sustainability and electrification. It involves reimagining both the Jaguar and Land Rover brands, with Jaguar becoming an all-electric luxury brand and Land Rover to launch electric variants. Jaguar has a new logo and has undergone a dramatic styling renaissance. Its first new-generation electric vehicle (EV), based on the recently revealed Vision Type 00 concept car, is due to be unveiled later this year.

Wirtz unfazed by huge Liverpool price tag

"I just want to play football and how much money the clubs pay between each other, it doesn't matter," he said. Florian Wirtz says his huge price tag 'doesn't matter' as he prepares for his first season in the Premier League after a switch to champions Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen. The attacking midfielder arrived at Anfield for an initial £100 million ($132 million) that could rise to £116 million with add-ons, making his move a potential British record. ALSO READ: Son Heung-min to leave Tottenham this summer after decade However, speaking after impressing in a 3-2 friendly win over Athletic Bilbao on Monday, the 22-year-old brushed off the size of his transfer fee. 'I don't think about it. I just want to play football and how much money the clubs pay between each other, it doesn't matter,' he said. 'Of course the big challenge is to win the title again and it is the most difficult thing so (I will) try and just create chances and also work against the ball. 'I can also run a lot so (I will) bring this to the team and then with the ball I can make the team better and bring my teammates into better situations.' Liverpool face FA Cup winners Crystal Palace in the season-opening Community Shield on Sunday and kick off their Premier League title defence at home to Bournemouth on August 15. Germany international Wirtz said he was relishing the challenge. 'There are some differences to Germany but I think there is also something I can learn and make me better so I am really looking forward to it,' he said. 'It's more intense and more physical, every player is really strong, really fast. That is what everybody is telling me.' – Big spenders – Liverpool have spent more than £250 million so far in the summer transfer window on a clutch of new players including Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong, who also came from Leverkusen, and Giorgi Mamardashvili. The club are understood to have made a bid of around £110 million plus potential add-ons for unsettled Newcastle striker Alexander Isak last week, which was rejected. Manager Arne Slot said after two friendlies against Athletic Bilbao at Anfield on Monday that there was 'always room for improvement' despite the club's march to a record-equalling 20th league title last season. 'We've added a few, in my opinion, extra weapons,' said the Dutchman. 'So, Florian has a lot of creativity in the final third. We've lost with Trent (Alexander-Arnold, who has signed for Real Madrid) a lot of creativity from the back. 'Trent's crosses and picking out runners was so special -– I think Flo has this quality as well in a totally different position.' Liverpool paid tribute to late forward Diogo Jota in their first matches at Anfield since the forward and his brother Andre Silva died in a car crash in Spain last month. Slot said in his programme notes that it had been a 'tough time for everyone connected with the club, but especially for Diogo's family, his wife, his children and friends'. 'We cannot imagine the pain that they have been going through, and the club will continue to give them all the support they can going forward,' he wrote. 'We will always carry him with us in our hearts, in our thoughts, wherever we go.'
