Union Minister Bhupender Yadav slams Congress over Karnataka caste survey, calls it 'political cover-up'
New Delhi [India], June 17 (ANI): Union Minister Bhupender Yadav on Monday accused the Congress-led Karnataka government of misusing public funds and attempting a 'political cover-up' through its re-enumeration of the 2015 caste survey.
'The reason India was considered a fragile economy in 2014 was due to the Congress party's misuse of taxpayers' money through corruption and broke their trust. They must answer how Rs 165 crore was spent when Congress itself is now questioning the accuracy of that data. Who will take responsibility for that expenditure? Either they were simply travelling, as they often do,' said Yadav.
'Congress is repeating its old patterns, and we demand accountability for Karnataka's costly exercise. Their re-survey is nothing more than a political cover-up,' said Yadav.
Union Minister Bhupender Yadav also accused the Congress party, accusing it of consistently betraying the Other Backward Classes (OBCs) and reducing social justice to a mere political slogan.
'The OBC community has always been betrayed by the Congress. If the Congress had genuine intent, it would have formed a new commission after scrapping the Kaka Kalelkar Commission... Instead, they dismissed the commission's report and continued to rule... Later, when the Mandal Commission was constituted and the Supreme Court upheld its legality, the Congress worked to weaken the OBC Commission,'
'Congress has never stood with the poor, OBCs, or SC/ST communities. Their history shows a pattern of neglect. Even now, their actions in Karnataka expose their hypocrisy -- Rahul Gandhi calls the state an ideal model, yet the timing and contradictions around the caste survey re-enumeration prove that social justice is just a showpiece for them,' he added.
Yadav also expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for addressing the long-standing issue of reservations in admissions to central schools and credited the Modi government's economic initiatives with lifting crores of people out of poverty.
'Misleading the OBC community has been Congress's policy; delivering justice to them has never been their intent,' Yadav said, reiterating the BJP's commitment to inclusive welfare and empowerment.
This comes after Siddaramaiah earlier said that they accepted the suggestion made by top Congress leadership to re-enumerate the case census data.
'Discussions were held regarding the caste census as concerns were raised by some organisations, religious heads, and even a few ministers. The report submitted on the caste census has been accepted in principle. There is an agreement that a caste enumeration should be conducted. We have also agreed to this,' he said. (ANI)

Telangana govt grants administrative sanction for Phase 2B of Hyderabad Metro
Telangana on Monday accorded administrative sanction for Phase 2B of Hyderabad Metro Rail (Phase 2B), estimated to cost Rs 19,579 crore, as a joint venture between the state government and Centre. The order in this regard from the Municipal Administration and Urban Development department, dated June 16, is applicable to three upcoming corridors. According to the order, after careful examination of the matter, the government accorded 'administrative sanction for implementation of Hyderabad Metro Rail Phase-II (B) project consisting of three corridors for a length of 86.1 km to be undertaken by Hyderabad Airport Metro Limited as a 50:50 Joint Venture (JV) project between Government of Telangana and Government of India…' The estimated cost will be funded through a JV model, adhering to the Government of India's norms and policy guidelines. While the state government will contribute Rs 5,874 crore (30%) of the total cost, the Centre will provide Rs 3,524 crore (18%). A significant portion, Rs 9,398 crore (48%), will be sourced as debt or loans from financial institutions like Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Asian Development Bank (ADB), etc. Finally, a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) component will cover the remaining Rs 783 crore (4%). Under Phase 1, the state government operates three corridors covering 69 km and is the largest public-private partnership metro rail project in the world. Since 2017, the Hyderabad Metro Rail Ltd (HMRL) has been operating trains on the LB Nagar to Miyapur, Nagole to Raidurgam, and JBS to MGBS corridors. The stretch from MGBS to Falaknuma, however, has not materialised, mainly due to objections related to property acquisition and route alignment issues, and the new government has taken up the work for this stretch too along with the rest of the Phase 2 corridors. Under Phase 2A, a proposal covering five corridors (76.4 km) at an estimated cost of Rs 24,269 crore has been sent to the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA). Phase 2 A includes Corridor IV: Nagole – Shamshabad RGIA (Airport Corridor) stretching 36.8 km, Corridor V: Raidurg – Kokapet Neopolis covering 11.6 km, Corridor VI: MGBS – Chandrayangutta (Old City Corridor) extending 7.5 km, Corridor VII: Miyapur – Patancheru covering 13.4 km, and Corridor VIII: LB Nagar – Hayat Nagar stretching 7.1 km. The Hyderabad Airport Metro Limited (HAML) submitted proposals for Phase 2B to the government in May this year. Under Phase 2B, a 39.6-km stretch is proposed between RGIA to Future City (Skills University) as Corridor IX; a 24.5-km stretch is proposed between Jubilee Bus Station (JBS) and Medchal as Corridor X; and a 22-km stretch is proposed between JBS and Shamirpet as Corridor XI.

Congress says open to alliance in UP but also focused on rebuilding its strength on ground
Congress is in the middle of a month-long organisation-building campaign across all 75 districts in Uttar Pradesh (UP) to strengthen its grassroots presence, and the party is hopeful of striking a 'respectful and suitable' alliance to take on the BJP in the 2027 assembly polls. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Congress-Samajwadi Party alliance delivered a strong performance—the Congress winning six of the 17 seats it contested and the SP bagging 37 seats—reducing the BJP's tally from 62 to 33 in UP, the most populous state in the country. Perhaps that is why Congress general secretary and Uttar Pradesh in-charge Avinash Pande told PTI that while the party is focused on rebuilding its grassroots presence across the state, it would, in all likelihood, look to enter into a 'respectable and suitable alliance' under the INDIA bloc to take on the BJP in the next round of elections.' For the moment, however, Mr. Pande said, the party in the middle of "Sangathan Srijan" (organisation building) campaign across all 75 districts in UP is also gearing up for the panchayat polls, which would be held in 2026, a year ahead of the 2027 polls. Mr. Pande, who is on a seven-day tour of the state, meeting district-level leaders and workers to assess progress and energise the cadre, said a 100-day programme has been launched to drive the effort, with trained professionals overseeing implementation as the Congress is eyeing the panchayat polls to increase its rural penetration in UP. In the 2022 state polls, the two parties had contested separately. While SP improved its count from 47 to 111 seats, Congress was reduced to just two. "Talking about the alliance, the INDIA bloc is very much in existence, but as you know, an alliance of the regional parties and us (Congress) as a national party came together to give a strong opposition to the BJP. So, we are strengthening our organisation and because of that we will come together as a strong alliance," Mr. Pande told PTI. "We are trying to build our party stronger so that in case if we have a respectable and suitable alliance at the time of elections to defeat the BJP, then we should be in a good position to give a befitting result," he added. On the rise of regional parties like the SP and BSP and the BJP's current dominance, Pande said, 'I must tell you that regional parties came much, much later than the Congress, which was giving good governance to the people in Uttar Pradesh right from the freedom and after the formation of the state." "At present, we are focused on organisation rebuilding of the party in Uttar Pradesh, not just for contesting the elections alone but also doing a lot of other works which are directly related to the cause of the people and the welfare of the state." Mr. Pande also hit out at the BJP government, accusing it of autocratic functioning and sidelining the democratic role of the opposition. 'One thing that everybody can see is that the government is biased and trying to violate the Constitution by taking autocratic decisions. You can see all the decisions are being taken by suppressing the opposition, which is not being accorded due respect,' he said. He added, 'Obviously it is the government which is responsible to carry people's liking and welfare. They should take care of people's welfare—whether it is for infrastructure, education, employment or inflation. Congress is performing its responsibility as Opposition with full ability and best intentions.' On the organisational front, the senior Congress leader said the party's "Sangathan Srijan" campaign aims to rebuild its structure at five levels—state, district, block, mandal, and booth—following a resolution passed at the AICC plenary session. 'This is being undertaken in a phased manner under the leadership of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee and the guidance of the party's central leadership,' he said. On Congress' relevance in UP today, Mr. Pande said, 'I must tell you that Congress is the country's oldest party which played a role in the freedom struggle. It has always been very relevant and ideologically very close to the psyche of the common Indian,' he added. 'The Congress in UP is trying to restructure itself from the state level to the booth level,' he added. 'There is a visible sense of enthusiasm among the party workers, and I am confident Congress will perform well in the 2026 panchayat elections, the 2027 assembly elections, and the 2029 general elections. We aim to regain public trust and serve the people of Uttar Pradesh in line with their expectations,' he said.

The Thackeray camp in the party's mouthpiece 'Saamana' alleged that the chief minister's move to offer condolences, announce a compensation to the heirs of the deceased and the inquiry into the incident are a sham, and the Mahayuti leaders are shedding crocodile tears. "Chief Minister's close associate and state minister of disaster management Girish Mahajan seems to be waiting for such accidents. As soon as an accident occurs, he immediately announces an assistance of Rs 5 lakh each to the families of the dead and free treatment to the injured. Girish Mahajan puts the price of the lives lost due to government negligence at Rs 5 lakh each, but why are the lives being lost? But why did these people lose their lives? The editorial also referred to the cracks at the platform of the newly unveiled statue of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at Rajkot fort in Malvan, saying it is quite worrisome. 'First, the first grand statue there collapsed last year and now the platform of the new statue has caved in. This is a failure of the Public Works Department. Here, the bridge over the Indrayani River collapsed, and there, the platform of the statue of Shivaji Maharaj has deteriorated. So, where exactly did the crores of rupees spent on this go? If you are not going to investigate this, then your announcements of investigations and checks are in vain," said the editorial. The editorial also mentioned the death of five passengers who fell from a Mumbai local train, saying that its grief and shock are disturbing the state. "Railways, rivers, roads and air transport have all become unsafe in the state. A series of such accidents is happening one after another in the country and Maharashtra. This has raised a question mark over the claims of those who call themselves Vikas Purush or survivors of the people. Accidents are happening, people are losing their lives in them, and this is largely due to the government's inaction," said Shiv Sena(UBT) in Saamana. The editorial also targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying that he left for a three-nation tour, ignoring the grief after the Ahmedabad plane crash. "The pyres of those who died in the plane crash have not been extinguished. The tears of the families have not stopped as the Prime Minister came and left Ahmedabad. The same can be said of the rulers in Maharashtra. The government, which is wasting money on unnecessary projects, does not work on the bridge over the Indrayani River and in a moment, the bridge collapses and people are swept away alive," said the Saamana editorial.
