Congress councillors protest, seek removal of acting mayor
The councillors alleged that repeated appointments of acting mayors undermine democratic values and demanded immediate elections for the mayoral post. They criticised the BJP-led state govt for extending Yadav's tenure instead of taking strict action against her, despite recent developments in the case.
Congress councillor Dashrath Singh Shekhawat said that lease deeds worth over Rs 100 crore were allegedly issued fraudulently.
"Four officials were already suspended, including Kusum Yadav's OSD, Hansa Meena. This clearly indicates the mayor's involvement, yet the govt failed to act," he said.
Shekhawat said this is the third time the govt appointed an acting mayor, even though the Congress holds a majority in JMC-H. "We demand that elections be held immediately so that a democratically elected representative can lead the civic body," he added.

I pray to Lord Badri Vishal Ji for the well-being of the people affected by this accident,' Adityanath posted on X in Hindi. Lucknow, Aug 5 (PTI) Top Uttar Pradesh leaders, including Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, on Tuesday expressed concern over the cloudburst in Uttarakhand and prayed for the well-being of the people of the hill state. 'Our demand is that rescue and relief operations be carried out on a war-footing and every possible effort be made to save people's lives. Every single life is precious,' Yadav said, adding, 'Environmental protection is the guarantee of life preservation.' BSP chief Mayawati said the news of widespread destruction, including the collapse of houses and hotels, as well as several people missing due to the cloudburst in the Dharali village of the Uttarkashi district is extremely sad and concerning. At least half the village was buried under the fast flowing mudslide of slush, rubble and water, officials said as rescue personnel battled the elements in the ecologically fragile heights to contain the damage. Contiguous buildings, including three- and four-storey houses, fell like a pack of cards as the surging waters washed over them.
