Andhra to bring special law against false propaganda on social media
Amaravati, Aug 19 (PTI) Andhra Pradesh Home Minister V Anitha on Tuesday said that the government will introduce a special law against false propaganda on social media.
Anitha said that a fact-finding committee will be established to present facts before the public and counter misinformation that misleads people and creates insecurity across the state.
'The government will bring a special law in the Assembly to act against false propaganda on social media," said Anitha, addressing a press conference.
Unable to tolerate the NDA coalition government's welfare schemes, some are allegedly misrepresenting facts on social media, she said, adding that strict action will be taken against such campaigns.
The minister cited alleged 'false claims' such as Amaravati being submerged and Prakasam Barrage gates falling apart were attempting to 'malign the government deliberately'.
She highlighted that within just four days of Stree Shakti implementation, more than 18 lakh women travelled in buses at free of cost, gaining benefits worth nearly Rs 20 crore. 'Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu knows how to curb anti-social forces. Such elements will be dealt firmly, and peace will never be compromised," she added. PTI MS STH ADB

UN envoy warns of renewed violence in Syria a month into fragile ceasefire
Last Updated: United Nations, Aug 22 (AP) Syria's transition remains 'on a knife-edge" and violence could resume at any moment in the southern city of Sweida, which saw deadly clashes last month, the top UN envoy for Syria warned on Thursday. Geir Pedersen told the UN Security Council that while violence in Sweida has largely subsided following a ceasefire, 'the threat of renewed conflict is ever-present — as are the political centrifugal forces that threaten Syria's sovereignty, unity, independence and territorial integrity." Syria is grappling with deep ethnic and religious divisions following the ouster of Syria's autocratic President Bashar Assad in December, which brought an end to decades of Assad family rule. The transition has proven fragile, with renewed violence erupting in March along the coast and in July in Sweida, a city with a significant Druze population, highlighting the continued threat to peace after years of civil war. Clashes erupted in Sweida on July 13 between Druze militias and local Sunni Muslim Bedouin tribes, and government forces intervened, nominally to restore order but they ended up essentially siding with the Bedouins. Israel intervened in defence of the Druze, launching dozens of airstrikes on convoys of government fighters. Pedersen said in a video briefing to the council that although the July 19 ceasefire agreement has largely held, 'we are still seeing dangerous hostilities and skirmishes on the margins of Sweida. And violence could resume at any moment". The UN envoy said there is an urgent need for security forces under the transitional government led by interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa to demonstrate that they are acting to protect all Syrians. Pedersen called for major security sector reforms in Syria and the disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration of non-government forces. He warned that international support for Syria 'risks being squandered or misdirected" without a genuine political transition that lays the path for long-term stability, good governance, credible reforms and a firm commitment to the rule of law and justice. UN humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher called the humanitarian situation in Syria 'dire," saying 16 million people across the country need humanitarian support. He said aid workers need protection and safety, noting that humanitarian convoys came under fire this month. He said money for food and other assistance is desperately needed, pointing to the UN humanitarian appeal for $3.19 billion for 2025 being only 14% funded. Car bomb, helicopter attack in Colombia kill 13, including police officers
Agency: PTI Last Updated: Bogota, Aug 22 (AP) A car bomb and a separate attack on a police helicopter in Colombia have killed at least 13 people, according to authorities. President Gustavo Petro attributed both incidents, which took place on Thursday, to dissidents of the defunct Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, commonly known as FARC. Petro said on X that eight police officers died in the helicopter attack and noted that the aircraft was transporting personnel to an area in Antioquia, in northern Colombia, to eradicate coca leaf crops, the raw material for cocaine. Antioquia Gov Andrés Julián said on the same social media platform that a drone attacked the helicopter as it flew over coca leaf crops. Colombian Defence Minister Pedro Sánchez said that preliminary information indicates the attack caused a fire in the aircraft. Authorities did not immediately provide details of the conditions of the eight people who were injured in the helicopter attack. Meanwhile, authorities in the southwest city of Cali reported that a vehicle loaded with explosives detonated near a military aviation school, killing five people and injuring more than 30. The Colombian Aerospace Force did not immediately provide additional details of the explosion. FARC dissidents, who rejected a peace agreement with the government in 2016, and members of the Gulf Clan operate in Antioquia. Coca leaf cultivation is on the rise in Colombia. The area under cultivation reached a record 253,000 hectares in 2023, according to the latest report available from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. Punjab demands Rs 60,000cr from Centre, cites pending GST, rural fund, other dues
1 2 Chandigarh: Punjab finance minister Harpal Singh Cheema on Thursday urged the Centre to pay the state govt a total of Rs 60,000 crore, including a pending goods and services tax (GST) compensation and other outstanding funds. Cheema criticised the "arbitrary" rationalisation of GST tax slabs as a "gamble" by the Centre, calling it BJP's "jumlebaazi" (fraud). He also questioned the move to rationalise GST by slashing "sin tax" on goods like unmanufactured tobacco and cigarettes. After attending back-to-back meetings of the Union govt's group of ministers (GoM) on GST in New Delhi, Cheema told TOI that the state suffered substantial financial losses under the GST regime without receiving due compensation. "Centre wants to shatter the economy of the states and it is the biggest attack on India's federal structure. When states don't have funds to carry out developmental works, they will have to approach the Centre with folded hands for constructing schools and hospitals. Since the introduction of the GST regime, 27 exemptions have been given to various sectors and items, and rates have been revised 15 times already. It shows the Centre's GST system is faulty and needs to be corrected," he said. Providing a breakdown of the Rs 60,000-crore demand, Cheema said the amount includes Rs 50,000 crore for uncompensated GST losses, Rs 8,000 crore in pending rural development fund (RDF), and an additional Rs 1,000 crore that is set to be withdrawn from the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojna by dropping certain projects in the state. Cheema highlighted the financial impact on Punjab since GST regime was introduced. "Since the introduction of GST, Punjab has suffered a loss of Rs 1,11,045 crore," he said. He added that while the state's revenue projection was Rs 2,37,520 crore, Rs 1,26,485 crore was promised as compensation under the GST regime. The minister also voiced concerns over the Centre's handling of the compensation cess and the slashing of tax on "sin" goods. He alleged that Punjab suffered financial losses due to the Centre's "wrong policies". He added if the state had not joined the 'one-nation, one-tax' regime, its tax collection would have been much higher. Regarding the tax rate changes, Cheema accused the Centre of "gambling in the name of rationalisation" and randomly changing slabs. He cited the example of tax on unmanufactured tobacco being slashed from 90-98% to 40%, while the tax on cigarettes was reduced from 33-64% to 40%. He questioned how this could be a move to ensure people's health. He noted that the tax on processed food like pasta was proposed to be reduced from 12% to 5%. "At the meeting, we demanded that the state should be compensated on account of any losses due to rationalisation of GST rates," he said. Slamming the BJP, he said, "It is jumlebazi of the BJP-led Centre. They say people will celebrate Diwali, but they have played a gamble by trying to make some goods cheap and others costly... We have supported some of the changes, but the Centre should compensate the states for the losses." During his recent Independence Day speech, PM Narendra Modi announced that "next-generation GST reforms" would be unveiled by Diwali, referring to them as a "Diwali gift" and a "double Diwali" for the people.
