Man who caused FRU crash tragedy is being investigated

TELUK INTAN: The lorry driver involved in the crash that killed nine Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) personnel on Tuesday has been remanded for four days from yesterday.
Hilir Perak OCPD Asst Comm Bakri Zainal Abidin said the remand order against the 45-year-old man was issued by Magistrate Naidatul Athirah Azman.
The man is being investigated under Section 41 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death through reckless or dangerous driving.
If convicted, he faces a minimum imprisonment of two years and a maximum of 10 years, along with a fine of up to RM50,000.
Additionally, he will be disqualified from holding or obtaining a driving licence for a minimum of five years.
ACP Bakri also said the police will record statements from more than 60 individuals to assist in the investigation into the accident.
He said his department would call FRU members who witnessed the accident and the owner of the lorry company.
'This is to avoid a biased investigation.
'I also urge the public to come forward to provide information.
'We will look at it from all angles, namely human negligence, technical issues involving the vehicle as well as environmental issues,' he said when approached by reporters after the remand application for the lorry driver in the Magistrate's Court here yesterday, Bernama reported.
Meanwhile, DCP Bakri said an FRU member from Unit 5 Ipoh was placed in the Intensive Care Unit of the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital in Ipoh due to internal bleeding with head and abdominal injuries.
He added that eight more FRU personnel are still seeking treatment at the Teluk Intan Hospital.
The crash took place at about 8.50am on Tuesday when a truck transporting 18 FRU personnel, who were returning to Ipoh from an assignment in Teluk Intan, was struck by a gravel-laden lorry along Jalan Chikus-Sungai Lampam.
Nine FRU personnel were killed in the crash, two were seriously injured and seven others sustained minor injuries.

Klang boat tragedy: Victims may not have been wearing life jackets, say cops
KLANG: All victims involved in the capsized boat incident in the waters off Tanjung Harapan here Friday (June 6) were believed not to be wearing life jackets, says Asst Comm S. Vijaya Rao. The North Klang OCPD said initial investigations also revealed that the boat, which was being test-driven, was operated by its owner at the time. He said the absence of life jackets had made the search and rescue (SAR) operation for the remaining two missing victims among the six people on board more difficult. "Those who engage in activities at sea must wear life jackets, which are very useful during emergencies like this capsized boat incident, in addition to having swimming skills," he said at a press conference at the search site in Tanjung Harapan Saturday (June 7). ACP Vijaya said the location where the boat capsized had been identified, but strong currents may have swept the two missing victims away and caused them to drown. Meanwhile, he said police had recorded statements from three individuals, including one survivor. "The actual cause of the incident has yet to be determined, and the case is being investigated under Section 280 of the Penal Code," he said. In the incident at about 5pm, three individuals including a child died, one survived (Alvin Chang Yan Qin, 17), while a married couple remains missing. The deceased victims were Darren Gan, 3; Cheu Son Hin, 50; and Fong Yong Sen, 29, while those still missing have been identified as Gan Hon Tat, 32, and his wife Careen Man, 29, both from Klang Utama. - Bernama
