Former PM Manmohan Singh's portrait to be displayed at Golden Temple museum
A meeting of the SGPC executive committee, chaired by president Harjinder Singh Dhami, was held at the gurdwara body's head office on Tuesday.
The committee also discussed the three-page letter to the SGPC written by Balwant Singh Rajoana, a convict on death row in the Beant Singh assassination case.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Dhami stated the SGPC will soon take a decision on the mercy petition filed by Sikh body in Rajoana's case. He said Rajoana had written about the discrimination faced by Sikhs at the hands of governments. The letter also mentions Rajoana's request to withdraw the mercy petition filed by SGPC on his behalf.
Calling it a matter of community's concern, Dhami said the SGPC is making efforts to build a consensus by holding consultations with Panthic representative bodies, Nihung Singh groups, and Sikh sects. Two meetings have already taken place, and another meeting is scheduled for May 17 in Chandigarh with Sikh judges and lawyers. After that, a representative Panthic gathering will be convened, and a decision will be made in line with Panthic sentiment.
Dhami also said the SGPC has decided to give ₹5 lakh aid to the families of four Sikhs killed recently in an attack in Poonch, Jammu, amid India-Pakistan conflict.
He also announced plans for beautification of the path from Sri Guru Ram Das Ji Langar Hall to Gurdwara Baba Atal Rai Sahib at Sri Harmandar Sahib complex, including planting trees on both sides to create a lush and shaded environment for devotees. This service will be undertaken by Kar Sewa Baba Kashmir Singh Bhuriwale.
Additionally, he informed that the SGPC executive committee approved the display of portraits of Giani Mohan Singh (ex-head granthi of Harmandar Sahib), former Prime Minister of India Manmohan Singh, Baba Inderjit Singh Raqbewale, Baba Bishan Singh (Tarna Dal, Baba Bakala), and SGPC member Randhir Singh Cheema at the Central Sikh Museum.

The Akal Takht acting jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj on Thursday summoned Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) vice-chancellor Prof Karamjit Singh on the issue of his interaction with RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat during an event held in Mysuru, Karnataka. The video of the interaction shows VC 'briefing' RSS chief about education initiatives taken by the university. 'We have received complaints that you have hurt Sikh sentiments during an event held in South India. As per a viral video, which is also attached to the written complaints, you have made an expression against the distinct existence of Sikhs through research works in a chair of Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU), which is not as per Gurmat (Guru's teachings)', reads the letter issued by Akal Takht secretariat. It adds, 'As per the order of Akal Takht acting jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj, you will appear at the Takht secretariat in 15 days with clarification in this regard in person'. The video of the interaction shows the VC 'briefing' RSS chief about education initiatives taken by the university during an event titled 'Gyan Sabha – Education for Viksit Bharat', organised by Shiksha Sanskriti Utthan Nyas and Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham at BN Bahadur Institute of Management Sciences (BNBIMS) in Manasagangotri in Mysuru. The event focused on the role of education in building a developed India. Bhagwat was the chief guest at the July 28 event. After the video went viral on social media, several Sikh organisations, including Sikh Youth Federation Bhindranwale, United Sikh Students Federation, and Sath, raised objections and lodged complaints with the Takht. Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) had removed the VC from the panel formed by the gurdwara body to frame service rules for the Akal Takht jathedar post. A University spokesperson in an official statement had clarified that the invitations to the chief guest and other participants were issued by the administration of Amrita University, Kochi, and the Guru Nanak Dev University VC had no role in the invitation process. Despite repeated attempts, the VC couldn't be contacted for comments.

Seven decades of faith: When ‘Ardas' was performed to keep B'putra calm
Dibrugarh: For the Sikh community residing in Dibrugarh, Aug 15 is not just a day to celebrate the country's independence, but also a grim reminder of the time when the mighty Brahmaputra river threatened to wash away half the town. Observing 'Brahmaputra Ardas Diwas', a unique 70-year-old tradition, the Sikh community commemorates the events of Aug 15, 1950, when a catastrophic 8.6 magnitude earthquake struck Assam during Independence Day celebrations, drastically altering the region's geography and raising the Brahmaputra's riverbed and setting the stage for devastating floods that would follow four years later. "The earthquake changed everything about our landscape, but the real crisis came in 1954 when the river started eroding with unprecedented force. Almost half of Dibrugarh town was being washed away, and our gurudwara on Assam Trunk (AT) Road was directly in the path of its destruction," said Sardar Jaspal Singh Bhurji, current president of Shri Guru Singh Sabha Gurudwara. The situation became so dire that the district collector of then undivided Lakhimpur district (before Dibrugarh district was formed) announced plans to evacuate the population, if the river reached AT Road. Essential infrastructures, including the district court, DC bungalow and post office faced imminent danger. Faced with this existential threat, the gurudwara's leadership called for an emergency meeting. Dr Khiem Singh Grewal, the then-president, initially proposed dismantling and relocating the CI sheet-roofed Dibrugarh Gurudwara located on AT Road. However, prominent community members, including Dhanna Singh, Sorain Singh, Dileep Singh and others had different ideas. "The Sikh Sangat had complete faith in Shri Guru Granth Sahib and refused to abandon the gurudwara. Instead, they decided that if disaster struck, they would simply rebuild," said Rupa Rani Kaur, general secretary of the gurudwara. They resolved to begin an Akhand Path (continuous reading of the Guru Granth Sahib) and perform Ardas (prayer) to protect the town. The culminating moment came during the Bhog ceremony, when Sardar Dhanna Singh led the community in Ardas, while Sardar Pratap Singh and four other members offered prasad directly to the Brahmaputra, seeking to calm it down. "From that very moment, the erosion stopped. The gurudwara still stands in the exact same place today, and we believe it was by the grace of Waheguru that both our gurudwara and Dibrugarh town were saved," Sardar Jaspal Singh Bhurji said.
