SEATTLE (AP) — Randy Arozarena homered, George Kirby tossed 6 1/3 crisp innings and the Seattle Mariners shut out the punchless Pirates for the third straight game, winning 1-0 on Sunday as Pittsburgh wasted another strong start by All-Star Paul Skenes.
Arozarena hit his 14th longball of the season and sixth in seven games when he turned on a low fastball in the sixth inning from reliever Carmen Mlodzinski (2-6).
Skenes had a short but effective outing, striking out 10 and allowing five hits in five innings. He threw 52 of his 78 pitches for strikes and lowered his ERA to 1.94 but is just 4-7 this season.
Pittsburgh was beaten 6-0 on Friday and 1-0 on Saturday during its scoreless weekend in Seattle. Before making the trip, the Pirates blanked St. Louis three straight times at home. The streak of playing in six straight shutouts is tied for the longest in major league history.
Kirby (3-4) struck out nine, allowed four singles and walked none.
Andres Munoz, named an AL All-Star on Sunday, worked the ninth for his 21st save, which is one shy of his career high. Key moment
The Mariners came close to taking a 1-0 lead in the first on a single by Jorge Polanco, but Pirates center fielder Oneil Cruz made a 105.2 mph throw to nab Seattle's J.P. Crawford at the plate. It was the second-hardest thrown ball to produce an outfield assist since Statcast started tracking in 2015. Key stat
Polanco's hit was the 1,000th of his career. Up next
Pirates: Left-hander Andrew Heaney (4-7, 4.16 ERA) starts Monday night at Kansas City.
Mariners: Right-hander Logan Gilbert (2-2, 3.40) is scheduled to start Tuesday at the New York Yankees.

Dennis Georgatos, a longtime sports writer for the AP and San Jose Mercury News, dies at age 70

(Tina Susman via AP) LODI, Calif. (AP) — Dennis Georgatos, a longtime sports writer for The Associated Press and the San Jose Mercury News and author of multiple books on the San Francisco 49ers, has died at age 70. Georgatos died on June 25 following a battle with brain cancer, his family said. He spent his final weeks at his vineyard near Lodi, California, as he visited with family and friends. Advertisement Known both for his congeniality and his wit, Georgatos spent more than four decades as a reporter, working up until his cancer diagnosis in November. He covered sports in California for nearly three decades and spent another 17 years covering Colorado's professional and college teams. Georgatos graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, with an English degree — political science was a passion, too — before pursuing his Master's in journalism at Cal State Northridge. He began his journalism career at United Press International in Los Angeles before joining The Associated Press. After a decade in San Diego, he moved to San Francisco for an expanded sports role. Around 2000, he joined the San Jose Mercury News as their 49ers beat writer, a job that lasted until layoffs at the newspaper in 2008. Georgatos wrote several books on the 49ers, including 'Stadium Stories: San Francisco 49ers,' and 'Game of My Life San Francisco 49ers: Memorable Stories of 49ers Football.' Advertisement While recovering from brain surgery, he regaled visitors with his reflections on interviews he had with sports greats such as Steve Young, Al Davis, Tony Gwynn and Barry Bonds. Georgatos grew close to Brandon Crawford's family through his son, Daniel, who played sports with the former San Francisco star shortstop growing up. Georgatos was an invited guest when the Giants held 'Brandon Crawford Day' on April 26. Georgatos spent the last 17 years of his career as a sports freelancer for the AP in Colorado, where he covered the Broncos, Rockies, Avalanche, Nuggets, the University of Colorado, Colorado State and Air Force athletics, among other assignments. 'The only thing Dennis loved as much as his family and friends was his time covering sports — any sports,' said Tina Susman, who forged a lifelong friendship with Georgatos after working with him at the AP bureau in San Diego. 'He never lost his love of the game or his loyalty toward AP for giving him the chance to cover events.' While living in Denver, Georgatos bought and operated Melita's, a popular downtown Greek restaurant, for several years. His Greek heritage was important to Georgatos, who was born on the island of Kefalonia. He, his brother, Dean, and parents, Jerry and Helen, immigrated to the United States after the devastation caused by the Great Ionian Earthquake of 1953. Georgatos attended Amador Valley High School in Pleasanton, California, where he was a two-way football standout. Advertisement Georgatos is survived by three sons — Gregory Georgatos of Rocklin, California; Daniel Georgatos of San Jose; and Cole Schafer of Littleton, Colorado. A celebration of life for Georgatos will be held on July 27 at Pastas Trattoria in Pleasanton. ___ AP college sports:

Pete Alonso and Kyle Schwarber will skip Home Run Derby the night before All-Star Game

New York Mets slugger and two-time winner Pete Alonso joined Philadelphia designated hitter Kyle Schwarber in electing to skip the Home Run Derby. The derby will be held next Monday, the night before the All-Star Game, at Truist Park in Atlanta. Both told reporters of their decision Sunday. The hitters so far who have committed to the event are Nationals outfielder James Wood, Braves outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr. and Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh. Alonso was named a National League reserve for the All-Star Game in a season when he's hit 20 homers. He won the Home Run Derby in 2019 and 2021. It wasn't held in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. 'I'm not necessarily called this year to do it. I love the event. It's a sick event. I just didn't really feel motivated to do it this year,' Alonso said, according to . 'I just figured I'd take a break, use the break as recovery and get back at it, help the team win in the second half.' Although he's not participating this summer, Schwarber left the door open to taking part next season when the All-Star Game is held in Philadelphia. Schwarber has 27 homers this season as he made his third All-Star team. ___ AP MLB:

Former Notre Dame pitcher Joe Boyle recalled and shines for the Tampa Bay Rays

Former Notre Dame pitcher Joe Boyle continues to impress at the Major League level. The Tampa Bay Rays recalled the right-hander from Triple-A Durham on Sunday, and he tossed five innings of relief, allowing just one unearned run while striking out seven in a 7-5 10-inning win over the Minnesota Twins in Minneapolis. Boyle was the main piece in Tampa Bay's offseason trade with the A's for Jeffrey Springs. After pitching five shutout innings in a spot start against the Atlanta Braves on April 13, Boyle returned to Durham and continued to dominate. He posted a 1.66 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and an 86-to-25 K-to-BB ratio over 65 innings across his last 13 outings. He was named the Rays' minor league pitcher of the month and International League pitcher of the month for June. Boyle was scratched from a start this past Saturday ahead of getting the call back to the big leagues. Tampa Bay will play seven games in seven days to close out its first-half schedule, so Boyle could be in line to make a spot start during the final week before the All-Star break. He could also help relieve some stress on the Rays' bullpen, which has struggled lately, and he could help back up Drew Rasmussen as a way to limit his workload as he transitions back to starting in his return from his third major right elbow surgery. Boyle was originally drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the fifth round (No. 143 overall) in the 2020 Major League Baseball Draft.
