Man left in critical condition after trying to save Malcolm-Jamal Warner
The 54-year-old actor died after being swept away by a rip current on a beach in Costa Rica over the weekend and another unnamed man – who was injured in the incident – was actually a Good Samaritan who spotted Warner in difficulty and tried to save him.
The Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ) told PEOPLE in a statement: "The victim appears to have entered the sea and was apparently swept away by a current. The man was rescued by bystanders and taken to shore, where he received treatment from the Costa Rican Red Cross. However, he was declared lifeless at the scene."
A spokesperson for the OIJ confirmed to PEOPLE that the second victim "came in [the water] to help Mr. Warner."
The spokesperson added that the other person had no personal connection to Warner, but saw him from the beach and tried to help.
The Cosby Show actor Warner was on vacation with his wife and daughter at the time of the accident, according to NBC News.
The OIJ also confirmed that Warner's autopsy showed he died from accidental asphyxiation by submersion.
It added: 'The body will be removed from the Judicial Morgue by a funeral service company hired by Mr. Warner's family.'
Meanwhile, tributes to Malcolm poured in from across the showbiz world, with his 9-1-1 co-star Jennifer Love Hewitt stating that the tragedy "hurts my heart".
She wrote on social media: "This hurts my heart. A gentleman, an incredible talent and we were so lucky to have him in the 9-1-1 family. Heartbroken and sending love to his family."
Comedian Sherri Shepherd described Malcolm as "one of the most-grounded people I've met in our business" after working with him on the TV series Sherri.
She said: "As someone who grew up on TV, Malcolm remained one of the most-grounded people I've ever met in our business. To know Malcolm was to know a renaissance man that possessed humour, grace, humility and deep cultural appreciation. He was just a good guy!
"His passing is a true loss to the Hollywood community. He was a proud girl dad and loved his daughter so much. To his family, friends and all who loved him - my heart is with you."

Heidi Klum admits to being a 'control freak'
Heidi Klum is a "workaholic". The 52-year-old model has hosted all 20 seasons of Germany's Next Top Model since its premiere in 2006, while she's also served as a judge on America's Got Talent, and Heidi admits that she feels compelled to take a hands-on approach to her work. She told People: "I'm a workaholic, control freak. "I've been so focused with the shows that I have been doing and making sure that everything that comes out of them looks good. I love what I do." Heidi's passion for fashion and design remains undiminished. She said: "My fashion heart still goes [crazy] when I see something fabulous, when I see an amazing dress, when someone does something new, I'm like, 'How did you come up with that?' I'm still amazed at people and their talent." Heidi is also looking forward to getting older, insisting that she intends to embrace her grey hairs. She said: "Don't we all want to get old? I know we always say that, but it's the truth. I'm already looking at 60 and 70, hopefully 80 and 90. And if we're still kicking it then, let's celebrate." Earlier this year, Heidi observed that everyone should wear "what the heck they want to wear". The model believes people should be open-minded and ambitious when it comes to their sense of style. Heidi told People: "I feel like everyone should wear what the heck they want to wear. I feel like that's what makes us all individually special, so I feel like rules are just not the way to go. "But other than that, I feel like in fashion, anything is possible right now. "[There are] just no long trains anymore, unfortunately. I'm still wearing one. I don't care now. I'm going everywhere with a train." Heidi recently returned to host the hit TV show Project Runway, and she has relished the experience. The catwalk star - who originally appeared on Project Runway between 2004 and 2017 - said: "It's felt like coming home, really like coming home."

Sharon Osbourne 'heartbroken' over Ozzy's death
Sharon Osbourne is being "held up" by her family following Ozzy Osbourne's death. The Black Sabbath frontman passed away on July 22, aged 76, and Sharon has been left feeling "heartbroken" by her husband's passing. A source told People: "Sharon's heartbroken but very proud of the life the family built together. "Everyone's rallying around her. She's been the rock of this family for decades, and now it's her turn to be held up." Sharon had Aimee, 41, Kelly, 40, and Jack, 39, with Ozzy, and "the kids are making sure she's never alone". The insider added: "There's a lot of pain, but also a lot of comfort from the family time that they got to enjoy up until the very end." Ozzy's death was announced by his family, who revealed that he was "surrounded by love" when he passed away. They said in a statement: "It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning. He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family privacy at this time." Meanwhile, Ozzy's autobiography is set to be released in October. The upcoming autobiography will explore the ups and downs of Ozzy's life, including the cheating scandal that almost ended his marriage in 2016. A source told The Sun on Sunday newspaper: "This book was basically Ozzy's last confessions and contains a lot of passages about how he is sorry for the affair. "As he was always brutally honest during his life, it's been decided not a word will be changed, even about painful times in his life and how his affair affected Sharon." The 72-year-old TV star - who married Ozzy in 1982 - is expected to write a foreword to the book, which is titled Last Rites. The source added: "Sharon is made of stern stuff and the publishers know she will want to leave her fingerprint on this book. Writing its foreword will also be cathartic for her and act as a way of laying Ozzy to rest."

Billy Joel insists DUIs 'never happened'
Billy Joel is adamant he's never faced a drink driving charge. The veteran musician, 76, has addressed long-standing rumours about his past in his new documentary Billy Joel: And So It Goes and he has insisted he's never been prosecuted for a DUI (driving under the influence charge) despite previous reports suggesting he got in trouble with the law after a series of motoring mishaps. He explained: "There's this rumor that I have all these DUIs. That never happened. But people keep repeating the myth. 'Oh, he's got so many DUIs.' "I never had a DUI. So f*** you. The press can be mean. So having that much attention paid to you is not easy." Joel was involved in a number of car accidents over the years - including a 1999 accident, a 2003 crash when he drove his Mercedes-Benz into a tree in Sag Harbor, New York and another smash in 2004 when he crashed his car into a house in Bayville, New York. However, Joel has since insisted the car accidents had nothing to do with alcohol and were actually linked to the "deep depression" he was suffering at the time. In a 2013 interview with the New York Times, he explained: "{The accidents had] nothing to do with the booze ... I never had a DUI in my life. That's another fallacy. "Look at the police records. My mind wasn't right. I wasn't focused. I went into a deep, deep depression after 9/11. 9/11 just knocked the wind out of me, and "I don't know even now if I've recovered from it. "It really, really hurt that man could do that to man. And then there was a break-up with somebody, and it took me a while to get me back on my feet again." In the documentary, Joel also opened up about becoming embroiled in a feud with Sir Elton John after the pop icon encouraged him to go to rehab. Joel explained: "Elton had made a comment that he thought I needed real rehab. He chalked it up to, 'Oh, he's a drunk.' And that really hurt me. "I said wait a minute? Don't you know me better than that? And there was bad blood for a little while. There was a dovetailing of things that happened during that time." Billy recalled feeling at "rock bottom" when he read Elton's comments. He said: "I was disillusioned with what I thought it was all supposed to mean. It was like all the signs were pointing to me: enough. And I wrote this letter to the band. 'I don't want to do this anymore. I'm gonna stop.'" Elton made the comments to Rolling Stone magazine back in 2011, shortly after they toured together. The singer explained at the time that they had "so many cancelled tours because of illnesses and various other things, alcoholism". Elton - who also struggled with addiction in the 70s and 80s - added: "He's going to hate me for this, but every time he goes to rehab they've been light ... I love you Billy, and this is tough love." Billy did actually spend time in rehab in 2005, and he previously acknowledged that addiction created "problems" in his life. The singer stopped drinking altogether in 2021.
