Sean McVay: 'No doubt' Jimmy Garoppolo is a starting NFL QB
While he's no immediate threat to Matthew Stafford's role with the team, McVay still believes Garoppolo is a starter in the league. He added that Garoppolo is the best backup quarterback in the NFL.
"I look at Jimmy — he's a starting quarterback," McVay told Fanduel TV's Kay Adams this week. "Jimmy's played at a really high level. an he's going into Year 12. He's got so many things to bring to the table.
"... There's no doubt in my mind he's a starting quarterback in this league and I think he'll get a chance to be able to do that again. ... Having Jimmy has been a real blessing."
This mirrors what McVay said all offseason about Garoppolo before Stafford returned to the team and what the head coach said to reporters after training camp practice this week.
Garoppolo played one game for the Rams in 2024 — Week 18 game when L.A. didn't play its starters ahead of the playoffs. He completed 65.9% of his passes in that game for 334 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.
He's had to step in for Stafford during training camp while Stafford is limited with an injury.
The veteran chose to return to the Rams in 2025 despite reports of offers elsewhere because he enjoyed his time with the team. "I'm at that point in my career [where] those are the little things that make a difference to me," he said in the spring."
McVay's endorsement of Garoppolo could mean one of a few different things. He could just be confident in Garoppolo's ability to command the offense in the event Stafford misses time. Or, he could be hyping up Garoppolo for a potential trade if another team is looking for a starting-caliber quarterback. Another option, though, is a hint that Garoppolo could be the Rams' future starter in a post-Stafford world in the event they can't land a quarterback in the draft.
Either way, Garoppolo has a big fan in his head coach.

Ravens waived an undrafted rookie offensive tackle
The Ravens have made nearly a dozen roster moves over the past four days and just parted ways with another undrafted free agent. Baltimore signed former Jaguars running back D'Ernest Johnson on Saturday, and to make room on the roster, the Ravens waived undrafted rookie free agent offensive lineman Ozzie Hutchinson. Hutchinson (6-4, 305) signed with Baltimore following the 2025 NFL draft after he appeared in 41 games during his stint at Albany (2019-23), earning second-team All-CAA honors in his final season. Before the Hutchinson move, Baltimore announced five roster moves on Saturday, with the shocker being the release of undrafted rookie kicker John Hoyland. In all, the Ravens signed Brent Urban, Scotty Washington, and Baylor Cupp, while releasing Hoyland, tight end Sam Pitz, and linebacker Diwun Black. Former Falcons running back eligible for Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2026
Todd Gurley, who spent one season in Atlanta, will be eligible for the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2026 The class of 2026 is shaping up to be special 👀 With the conclusion of the NFL's Pro Football Hall of Fame weekend, future Canton hopefuls can now turn their attention to next year's class. Former Falcons running back Todd Gurley will be among the players with first-time eligibility in 2026. After five productive years with the Los Angeles Rams, Gurley was released following the 2019 season. The Falcons signed the former Georgia standout as a free agent in 2020. While Gurley made a name for himself with the Rams, his lone season in Atlanta was underwhelming. Knee injuries got the best of the former top-10 pick. Gurley rushed for 678 yards and nine touchdowns for the Falcons, adding 24 catches for 164 receiving yards. Atlanta got off to an 0-5 start in 2020, prompting team owner Arthur Blank to fire head coach Dan Quinn and general manager Thomas Dimitroff. This didn't help Gurley in what ended up being his final NFL season. Gurley's career may have ended quietly, but he played at an MVP level early on, and should have an outside shot at the Hall of Fame. In 2014, he won the NFL's Offensive Rookie of the Year award despite missing three games. In 2017, he rushed for 1,305 yards and 13 touchdowns, with an additional 64 catches for 788 receiving yards and six touchdown receptions. Gurley was nearly as good during his 2018 season, recording 1,831 yards from scrimmage and 21 total touchdowns. Jimmy Horn Jr. turning heads at Panthers training camp with his speed and toughness
Colorado football currently has four receivers on NFL training camp rosters who were on the team last season. Other than the Jaguars' Travis Hunter, the standout has been Carolina Panthers rookie Jimmy Horn Jr. Horn was a sixth-round pick by the Panthers in the 2025 NFL draft, but after a fantastic offseason, he is looking like a steal of the draft. With his speed and toughness, Horn is everything a team would want out of a sixth-round receiver. In a recent mock scrimmage at Bank of America Stadium, Horn impressed once again, scoring the first touchdown for the second team offense. Horn was in motion before the snap and then snuck underneath, and quarterback Andy Dalton found him for an easy walk into the endzone. While it was not a typical go-ball that the speedy Horn should see plenty of this season, it was a play that Colorado ran a ton with Horn. Get him the ball in space and let his open-field ability do the rest. Panthers head coach Dave Canales has loved what he has seen from the rookie receiver so far. "I think it's the energy he plays with," said Canales to "He doesn't quit on routes, he continues after the normal part of the protection he can count on, he continues to find space and play fast, and, it's a credit to his fitness, but it's also a credit to just the energy that he puts out there, that you want to throw to him." While sixth-round picks are far from guaranteed to make the final 53-man roster, Horn's performances through the offseason have made it almost a forgone conclusion that he makes Carolina's final group.
