UMS students and activist released on bail after rally
Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun confirmed their release on Thursday (June 26) but did not provide further details.
'They were released on bail on the same day,' he said briefly when contacted.
It is understood that Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) students Muhamad Fadhil Muhamad Kasim and Aliff Danial Badrul Akmal Hisham were arrested under the Sedition Act 1948 when they arrived at the Kepayan police headquarters to lodge a report about an incident where Fadhil's car was allegedly splashed with acid on Saturday (June 21).
Their arrests followed a peaceful overnight rally over the weekend led by UMS students, who gathered to protest against corruption and long-standing issues such as poor infrastructure and water supply woes in the state.
The rally drew controversy after participants burned placards depicting a caricature of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on the final day.

Sabah considers surveillance system to catch culprits disrupting water supply
KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah government is considering installing a surveillance system around State Water Department assets following cases of culprits tampering with water valves and causing supply disruptions. Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Shahelmey Yahya, who is also state public works minister, said the authorities were closely monitoring the matter, although the motives of those involved remained unclear. "In some cases, when Water Department patrol officers approach, the culprits run away. "We are not sure of their motives, but it could be sabotage, or perhaps they are 'acting smart' by trying to solve water supply problems in their own areas. "Of course it does (violate the law), because only Water Department employees are authorised to operate the valves, not members of the public," he said. Shahelmey, who is also Tanjung Keramat assemblyman, was speaking to reporters after concluding the nine-checkpoint Merdeka Convoi for Putatan yesterday. Commenting on the water supply situation in Kota Kinabalu and Putatan, he said it was stabilising following recent infrastructure works. He said the Telibung 2–Phase 2 pipeline installation was completed on July 14, while balancing activities at storage tanks had also been carried out. "We have received fewer complaints of water disruptions, except in early August when clarifier cleaning maintenance was carried out at Moyog. "However, that has also been completed and water supply is now stable," he said. Shahelmey added that the R3 main tanks supplying water to Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) and the Kingfisher area were in good condition. "I have not received reports of water supply disruptions, except for pipe bursts around Kota Kinabalu. Hotel water tank levels have also been reported to be sufficient," he said. He added that in Putatan, several areas such as Meruntum, Kampung Ulu and Lokawi were affected last week, but the situation has since improved.

Sabah sets aside RM600K to help gig workers open EPF accounts

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah is allocating about RM600,000 for gig workers in the e-hailing sector to open Employees Provident Fund (EPF) accounts. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said a total of 11,109 applications have been received from e-hailing workers to contribute to the EPF. 'I would like to announce that the... RM600,000 (is) to assist those (e-hailing workers) who have yet to open EPF accounts,' he said at Sabah Moto Day 8.0 at the Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Drill Field near here on Sunday (Aug 17). On the event, he said the large presence of around 60,000 riders and visitors proved that motorcycling activities continue to hold a place in the hearts of youths and the public. 'I am impressed to see the support shown by participants from all over Sabah, Sarawak and Brunei, regardless of age, race and religion, coming together to share the same passion,' Hajiji said. Advising participants to prioritise safety while on the road, he hoped the gathering would help create greater awareness of its importance among two-wheeler enthusiasts. Hajiji said the state government viewed youths as assets, with various initiatives implemented to develop human capital. He said it had spent a total of RM1.33bil – RM848.26mil for education assistance and RM485mil for talent and skills development programmes – from 2021 to 2025. After his speech, Hajiji led the participants in prayers for the late Zara Qairina Mahathir, the 13-year-old student who died on July 17, a day after being found unconscious on the ground floor of her school dormitory in Papar.

Sabah Umno at weakest point, faces critical juncture, says analyst
Losing the 17th Sabah election will leave Umno in a tough spot to recover support ahead of GE16, said academic Bilcher Bala. PETALING JAYA : Sabah Umno is at its weakest point in its history and faces a critical juncture in the upcoming 17th state election, says a political analyst. Bilcher Bala of Universiti Malaysia Sabah pointed to the statement by the state chapter's information chief, Suhaimi Nasir, that the state polls would determine whether Sabah Umno 'lives or dies'. Bilcher said that since losing dominance after the 2018 general election and exiting the state government two years ago, Sabah Umno has lost more than 2,000 grassroot leaders, leaving it at its weakest position to date. 'This state election isn't a normal political contest. It's set to test the people's belief in Umno's ability to regain its past prominence. 'Sabah used to be an Umno stronghold, and losing this state election would mean losing further political ground, which will be tough to recover ahead of the 16th general election (GE16),' he told FMT. On Friday, Suhaimi said the state election would be a 'life or death' battle for Sabah Umno as it would determine how the contests for parliamentary seats in GE16 play out. While the party currently holds seven of the 30 parliamentary seats in Sabah, the Libaran MP said forming the state government would enable Umno to win at least five more parliamentary seats in GE16. However, Bilcher said Suhaimi's 'life or death' remark could also be interpreted as aiming to stir the emotions of Sabah Umno's grassroots to unite the machinery and mobilise support. 'The reality is much more complex. The results of the polls will depend on the candidates, local issues, and the dynamic cooperation of political parties,' he said. On the other hand, Universiti Teknologi Mara's Tony Paridi Bagang believes that Umno would not face its end in Sabah so easily, given its long history in the state. He said the upcoming state election was more of a test of whether the party can return to dominance or not. 'While Sabah Barisan Nasional has reasons to be confident, it cannot be so sure because Sabah politics is so fluid,' he said. Tony said that even if Sabah Umno fails to form the next state government, it could still serve as a constructive opposition party to regain the people's confidence. 'As a national party that has been in the seat of government for nearly 61 years, Umno is experienced enough to record a comeback if it loses this state election,' he said.
