Andhra Pradesh government to distribute induction stoves to 11,400 Anganwadi centres from today
across the state on Thursday, 5 June, marking World Environment Day.

Plans are underway to extend this initiative to all 55,607 AWCs under the National Efficient Cooking Programme (NECP). The switch to induction stoves is expected to reduce recurring LPG costs, with annual savings estimated at around Rs 25 crore. It is also projected to prevent approximately 28,327 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year.
The NECP was formally launched a few months ago in Andhra Pradesh by chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu in the presence of Union minister for housing, power, and urban development, Manohar Lal Khattar.
The distribution of stoves and utensils will commence on Thursday.
Led by the AP dept of women and child welfare, the initiative aligns with the Union govt's 'Go Electric' campaign and the NECP, championed by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) and Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL).
The large-scale distribution programme will be inaugurated by minister for women, child welfare, and tribal welfare, G Sandhya Rani, alongside public representatives in Vijayawada on Thursday.
They will oversee the distribution of energy-efficient induction cooktops and compatible utensils to Anganwadi centres.
Minister Sandhya Rani, secretary (department of women and child welfare) Surya Kumari, and director M Venu Gopal Reddy expressed gratitude to chief minister Naidu and Union minister Khattar for their continued guidance. They also acknowledged the contributions of chief secretary K Vijayanand, BEE, EESL, and other state designated agencies for their collaborative efforts.

Anil Malik, secretary of the Union ministry of women and child development, praised Andhra Pradesh's efforts at a national conference held in Udaipur, Rajasthan.
"Having studied best practices from 12 major states, the partnership between AP govt and EESL serves as a national role model for implementing the NECP on a saturation basis. The women and child welfare department of the AP govt has taken the lead in eliminating fossil fuels from cooking at AWCs.
All other states will have to follow suit sooner or later," said Malik.
EESL CEO Shri Vishal Kapoor, along with top officials including CGM Shri Animesh Mishra, is currently monitoring and overseeing implementation.
Meanwhile, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency has assured full support for scaling and replicating Andhra Pradesh's clean cooking model across the country and encourages other states to adopt similar sustainable initiatives for long-term impact.

(Philippine Coast Guard via AP) The Philippines expressed serious concern on Tuesday over what it called "dangerous manoeuvres and unlawful interference" by Chinese vessels during a coast guard supply mission for Filipino fishermen in the Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea. Manila's Coast Guard deployed three vessels on Monday to deliver supplies, such as fuel and ice, to dozens of fishermen operating around the disputed atoll when they encountered "hazardous" and "blocking actions" from Chinese vessels in the area. "Their actions not only posed a grave danger to Philippine personnel and vessels, but also resulted in the unfortunate collision between the two Chinese vessels," the Philippine foreign ministry said in a statement. Philippine Coast Guard footage showed a Chinese Coast Guard ship trailing the PCG vessel before a Chinese navy ship suddenly cut across its path, colliding with it and damaging the Coast Guard's forecastle. It was the first known collision between Chinese vessels in the area. "Our assessment is that the real objective of the PLA Navy ship is to ram our Philippine Coast Guard (vessel). That is also (the) assessment of our Philippine Coast Guard," Armed Forces of the Philippines Chief of Staff General Romeo Brawner told reporters on Tuesday. China's actions also drew condemnation from the United States, a treaty ally of the Philippines. "We condemn this latest reckless action by China directed against a Philippine vessel... and commend the Philippine Coast Guard for their professionalism and their offer to render assistance," U.S. Ambassador to Manila, MaryKay Carlson, said on X. China's defence ministry and its embassy in Manila did not immediately respond to requests for comment. On Monday, China's coast guard said it took necessary measures to expel Philippine vessels from waters around the Scarborough Shoal. The confrontation marks the latest in a series of incidents amid a period of heightened tensions between Manila and Beijing over territorial disputes in the South China Sea. A 2016 ruling of an international arbitral tribunal voided Beijing's sweeping claims in the region, saying they had no basis under international law, a decision China rejects. PCG spokesperson Jay Tarriela said the PCG offered medical and search-and-rescue assistance via radio, but received no response from the Chinese side. He added there was no confirmation on whether any Chinese crew members were injured during the clash. "Yesterday's incident demonstrates the importance of adhering to international maritime rules," the Philippine foreign ministry said. It reaffirmed its commitment to diplomacy and dialogue in resolving differences. Rear Admiral Roy Trinidad, Philippine navy spokesperson for the South China Sea, warned at a press briefing on Tuesday that similar incidents could happen again as long as China continued to conduct what he called "illegal, coercive, aggressive and deceptive" activities in the strategic waterway.

The Lok Sabha on Tuesday passed the Indian Ports Bill, 2025, by voice vote amid continued protests by opposition members of Parliament demanding a discussion on the revision of electoral rolls in Bihar. The bill proposes modernizing India's port governance, enhancing trade efficiency, and solidifying India's position as a global maritime leader. 'Replacing colonial-era regulations, the bill reflects Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of a self-reliant, world-class maritime sector,' said the Union minister of ports, shipping and waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, who introduced the bill in the lower house. The bill replaces outdated provisions of the Indian Ports Act, 1908, with modern and contemporary regulations. It aims to simplify port procedures and digitalize operations to enhance ease of doing business (EoDB). The legislation also emphasizes sustainability, incorporating green initiatives, pollution control, and disaster management protocols for sustainable port development. Furthermore, it seeks to improve port competitiveness through transparent tariff policies and better investment frameworks, while ensuring uniform safety standards and planning across all Indian ports. It will reduce logistics costs by speeding up cargo movement and enhancing connectivity. It is also expected to generate significant employment opportunities in port operations, logistics, warehousing, and allied industries. Additionally, the bill outlines strict anti-pollution measures and eco-friendly port practices, contributing to a cleaner environment. Exporters and MSMEs will benefit from streamlined procedures and improved infrastructure, reducing bottlenecks and facilitating smoother operations. 'This bill marks a decisive step toward making India's ports globally competitive while safeguarding the environment and empowering coastal communities. It embodies the vision of 'ports for prosperity' and ensures our maritime sector remains future-ready,' said Sonowal. For ports themselves, the bill provides greater autonomy with accountability, allowing ports to set competitive tariffs within a transparent framework. It introduces integrated planning for long-term port development, ensuring cargo growth and improved hinterland connectivity. A boost to coastal shipping is also envisioned, with seamless integration with inland waterways and multimodal transport systems. The bill provides flexibility in funding, making clear provisions for public-private partnerships (PPPs) and foreign investment in port projects. The Maritime State Development Council (MSDC), comprising representatives from central and State governments, will coordinate national port development strategies. State maritime boards will have authority to effectively manage non-major ports, while dispute resolution committees will expedite the settlement of conflicts between ports, users, and service providers. 'The bill also aims to boost cooperative federalism as the MSDC is aimed at ironing out differences and laying down a smooth way forward for the holistic development of our ports. The bill also provides for the state maritime boards, which help to effectively manage non-major ports, allowing a comprehensive framework for port development," said Sonowal. "We are creating an ecosystem that will empower our ecosystem to spruce up the maritime prowess of Viksit Bharat, propelling India to become one of the top global maritime nations by 2047,' he added. In terms of sustainability and safety, the bill mandates waste reception and handling facilities at all ports. It also enforces stringent pollution prevention measures in line with international conventions like MARPOL and Ballast Water Management. Every port will require emergency preparedness plans for disasters and security threats, while promoting renewable energy and shore power systems will help reduce emissions and foster environmental sustainability.

Cabinet okays 4 semiconductor manufacturing units with Rs 4,600 crore outlay
New Delhi: The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Tuesday approved four more semiconductor projects under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) with an outlay of Rs 4,600 crore. The four proposals approved are from SiCSem, Continental Device India Private Limited (CDIL), 3D Glass Solutions Inc., and Advanced System in Package (ASIP) Technologies. With these, the total approved projects under the ISM have reached 10, with cumulative investments of around Rs 1.60 lakh crore in six states. "These four approved proposals will set up semiconductor manufacturing facilities with a cumulative investment of around Rs 4,600 crore and are expected to generate a cumulative employment for 2,034 skilled professionals, which would catalyse the electronic manufacturing ecosystem, resulting in the creation of many indirect jobs," a Cabinet communique said. SiCSem and 3D Glass will be set up in Odisha. CDIL is located in Punjab, and ASIP will be set up in Andhra Pradesh. SicSem Private Limited is collaborating with Clas-SiC Wafer Fab Ltd., UK, to establish an integrated facility of silicon carbide-based Compound Semiconductors in Info Valley, Bhubaneshwar. This will be the first commercial compound fab in the country. The project proposes to manufacture silicon carbide devices. This compound semiconductor fab will have an annual capacity of 60,000 wafers and a packaging capacity of 96 million units. The proposed products will have applications in missiles, defence equipment, electric vehicles (EVs), railways, fast chargers, data centre racks, consumer appliances, and solar power inverters, the Cabinet note said. 3D Glass Solutions Inc. (3DGS) will set up a vertically integrated advanced packaging and embedded glass substrate unit in Odisha. This unit will bring the world's most advanced packaging technology to India. The facility will have a large variety of advanced technologies, including glass interposers with passives and silicon bridges, and 3D heterogeneous integration (3DHI) modules. Planned capacity of this unit will be approximately 69,600 glass panel substrates, 50 million assembled units, and 13,200 3DHI modules per annum. The proposed products will have significant applications in defence, high-performance computing, artificial intelligence, RF and automotive, photonics and co-packaged optics, etc. According to the Cabinet, the Advanced System in Package Technologies (ASIP) will set up a semiconductor manufacturing unit in Andhra Pradesh, under a technology tie-up with APACT Co. Ltd, South Korea, with an annual capacity of 96 million units. The manufactured products will find applications in mobile phones, set-top boxes, automobile applications, and other electronic products. Continental Device (CDIL) will expand its discrete semiconductor manufacturing facility at Mohali, Punjab. The proposed facility will manufacture high-power discrete semiconductor devices such as MOSFETs, IGBTs, Schottky Bypass Diodes, and transistors, both in silicon and silicon carbide. The annual capacity of this brownfield expansion will be to the tune of 158.38 million units. The devices manufactured by these proposed units will have applications in automotive electronics, including EVs and their charging infrastructure, renewable energy systems, power conversion applications, industrial applications and communication infrastructure. "These would complement the growing world-class chip design capabilities coming up in the country, which are propelled by design infrastructure support provided by the government to 278 academic institutions and 72 start-ups. Already more than 60,000 students have availed the benefits of the talent development programme," said the Cabinet.
