Chris Taylor proves to be a difference-maker for Angels in win over Mariners

Angels second baseman Chris Taylor throws to first base after forcing out a Seattle Mariners runner during the Angels' 5-4 win Friday night at Angel Stadium. (Eric Thayer / Associated Press) Chris Taylor hadn't done much at the plate since the Angels signed him nearly two weeks ago. The 34-year-old veteran utilityman scuffled at the plate like he had when wearing Dodger blue — and joined the Angels at the front end of a five-game losing streak. Friday night at Angel Stadium, Taylor put together his best game so far — going two for three with a game-tying RBI double in his first multi-hit performance of the season (his first since Sept. 27). Advertisement Taylor also scored the decisive run in the fifth inning on a single from Nolan Schanuel to lift the Angels to a 5-4 win over the Seattle Mariners. In the bottom of the sixth, Seattle center fielder Julio Rodriguez robbed Taylor of a two-run home run to dead center field. In his first plate appearance in the third, Taylor scored on a single from Zach Neto to tie the score 1-1. The Angels put together one of their better performances at the plate. They combined for seven hits and struck out just seven times. With their third win in four games, the Angels (29-33) are three games back of second-place Seattle (32-30) and 5½ games behind AL West-leading Houston (35-28). Advertisement Catcher Travis d'Arnaud connected for a two-run home run in the fourth inning, his second of the season. Kyle Hendricks didn't have his best outing, giving up four runs on eight hits over six innings, but he did earn his 100th career win. Ryan Zeferjahn and Reid Detmers pitched a scoreless seventh and eighth, respectively, and closer Kenley Jansen tossed a scoreless ninth for his 13th save. Detmers hasn't given up a run — across eight appearances — since May 17. Analyst projects that Colts Jonathan Taylor gets another big payday down the road

Indianapolis Colts' running back Jonathan Taylor still has two years left on his current contract, but could be in store for another big payday when he hits free agency in 2027. Anthony Holzman-Escareno of put together his 'All-Paid Team of Tomorrow,' and at the top of the running back position group was Taylor. Holzman-Escareno projects that Taylor could earn $21 million per year on his next deal. Advertisement "With the cupboard bare of running backs who are poised to legitimately challenge Saquon Barkley for the All-Paid crown, Taylor is shunted to the top of the list," wrote Holzman-Escareno. Taylor signed a three-year, $42 million extension with the Colts back in 2023. At that time, he was still just 24 years old, and when he's set to be a free agent again, he will still only be 28 years old at that time. Currently, Taylor is averaging $14 million per year, which heading into the 2025 season, is the fourth-highest mark in the NFL. Taylor appeared in just 18 total games between the 2022 and 2023 seasons, but stayed relatively healthy in 2024--missing only three games--and he was highly productive once again. On the year, Taylor rushed for 1,431 yards, which was the fourth-most in football, and scored 11 rushing touchdowns.
