The Australian Wine Club: Deal on Italian reds

Some call it the king of wines – to others, Barolo can be more of a tyrant, brooking no argument and giving off astringently unwelcoming vibes. To say that Barolo is an acquired taste is a bit like acknowledging that not everyone likes caviar.
Some expensive experiences are simply not to everyone's tastes, and the tarry, tannin-drenched reds that give the Barolo region in northern Italy such a pedigree can be a disappointment for those expecting a different kind of wine.
The nebbiolo grapes – native to the northwest region of Piedmont – from which Barolo, by law, has to be made are little natural capsules of tannin and acidity. That's partly why a period of ageing is mandated for Barolo wines, to allow a certain degree of mellowing – even then, the power and mouth-coating richness are still its hallmarks.
But not all Piedmontese nebbiolo is destined for these heavyweight lipsmackers. With modern winemaking techniques, grapes grown a short drive from the defined boundaries of the Barolo Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita can deliver wines with beautifully fresh, fruit-driven profiles.
Wines like the Cossaro Monferrato Nebbiolo 2022, part of this week's special offer case from The Australian Wine Club – a thoughtful quartet of Italian reds that stray far from any cliche of Chianti in a basket.
As well as the nebbiolo there is the 2019 Amagia Etna Rosso, a blend driven by the nerello mascalese grapes from the mineral-rich slopes of Mount Etna with an RRP of $45. There's a 2022 Sartirano Figli Pinot Nero (Italian for pinot noir) and a Poggio al Lago Ripasso Valpolicella Ripasso 2021, from Verona in the northeast.
It's a mixed case that evokes undeniable pride in the voice of the Wine Club's man on the ground, Leo Bassano, who worked with winemaker Marco Cassaro to deliver something akin to Barolo's hip and engaging young nephew.
'Nebbiolo is the king of Piedmontese winemaking, but sometimes people have the perception before they drink a Barolo that it will be like a big, plummy Californian red, or even something from the Languedoc in France,' Bassano says. 'Then they get disappointed, but we wanted to show them that there are many styles of nebbiolo, and the wines from the Monferrato region are much softer.
'We wanted something that shows off the wild berry and red cherry flavours, the softness – there is tannin but it's riper and softer. It's quite skilful winemaking – you need to crush carefully, you need to control the temperature, you need to macerate very carefully, you need to handle the grapes very gently because otherwise you extract the harsher tannins.
'The fact that we have these relationships with these wineries allows us to do this – to source grapes and source wine across different areas and different denominations.'
Cossaro Monferrato Nebbiolo 2022
All of the hallmarks of Nebbiolo are here but in a fresh-faced, welcoming package – starting with cherry and liquorice bullets on the nose, floral notes but also a savoury undertow, and just a hint of tar and dried herbs. The palate is soft, silky and fresh, with plum and black cherry, espresso and chocolate, but also that tar for depth and tannins that are silky but structural to deliver a long finish. 14% alc, RRP $38 a bottle.

Armagia Etna Rosso 2019
It's hard not to picture a winter dessert straight from the oven as you breath in notes of cherry, vanilla, spiced plum, a hint of rhubarb and baking spices like cinnamon and nutmeg. But then the palate is juicy, washing those crunchy red fruits with lovely acidity and a touch more spice, and held in enough tannic structure to pitch it all in a perfect key. 13.5% alc, RRP $45 a bottle.

Sartirano Figli Pinot Nero 2022
With a medium garnet glint, the colour draws you in – but it's the aroma that seals the deal, full of floral notes with cherry and red berries giving way to chocolate, liquorice and a hint of leather. The palate is just so refreshing, more cherries and a hint of vanilla and sprinkled spice. Lovely, silky tannins give it an elegant length and medium body – Parma ham on the side anyone? 13.5% alc, RRP $40 a bottle.

Poggio al Lago Ripasso Valpolicella Ripasso 2021
An hour in a decanter before serving transforms this and unlocks a medley of ripe red fruits on the nose, cherry and summer berries, offset by cinnamon and chocolate. The cherry on the palate is lovely and ripe, along with chocolate and spice and just a lick of espresso. It's all very plush and concentrated but a splash of acidity on the finish gives a freshness and balance. 13.5% alc, RRP $35 a bottle.

GREENWASHING FAST FASHION Shein, which is one of the world's biggest online retailers, has been slapped with a $1.7 million Greenwashing fine for misleading customers on how environmentally friendly its products are. Shein, famous for it's ultra-cheap, trendy clothing, drops more than 9000 new products on its website each day and rakes in about $38 billion a year. But how good is all this fast-fashion for the environment? Well, according to Italy's competition authority or the AGCM, not good. See, it's just fined Shien about $1.7 Million dollars for greenwashing. That's basically when a product or a company is made to appear more environmentally friendly than it actually is. The AGCM reckons Shein hasn't been completely upfront or honest about its environmental impact and has been misleading customers with things like, claiming certain clothing lines were more sustainable than they actually were, that some items were fully recyclable when they weren't, and have also been vague about their commitment to reduce carbon emissions. The AGCM says this a big problem because it means customers aren't being told the real environmental cost before they buy. So in response, Shein has said they've improved their website to make sure their environmental claims are clearer and easy to understand. NSW WEATHER Parts of NSW have been hit with wild weather this week, and emergency and flood warnings are still in place for parts of the state. Residents in the state's Upper Hunter region, Northern Tablelands and Mid North Coast have experienced everything from snow, to winds, and heavy rain. The storms have impacted trees and powerlines and as a result, left thousands of people without electricity. The weather has also damaged buildings, including a school in Kempsey, where students were disrupted from sitting their HSC trials because their roof was left looking like this! PLASTICS TREATY A big meeting is happening in Switzerland where representatives from 179 countries are trying to agree on a global treaty to stop plastic pollution. Yep, plastics are a big problem for our environment. And while they might not seem like a big deal since most of us use plastic's everyday, experts say we're using and throwing out way too much of it. In fact, the world pumps out over 350 million tonnes of plastic waste each year, and that number is predicted to triple by 2060! It's why representatives from around the world are coming together to finish making a global treaty to control plastic waste. During the 10 day meeting, they'll talk about ways plastic's can be designed to be used for longer, what substitutes are out there and how to stop plastic's from ending up in the environment. It's something these environmentalists hope the UN figure out soon before it's too late. ALLIGATOR IN POOL First up, to a little situation in the US. Yeah, that's an alligator! This sheriff's deputy in Florida managed to wrangle the gator with his bare hands, and cool as a cucumber, took it out to his cop car, to be relocated. SPAIN HEATWAVE Now to a water park for dogs, in Spain. As the country sweats through its second heatwave of the summer, people and their pets have been looking for ways to keep cool. In some areas, temperatures have reached 42 degrees! VOLCANO ERUPTS And finally to a huge volcano erupting in Russia, sending ash 6 kilometres into the sky. The Krasheninnikov volcano hasn't erupted in hundreds of years, some records say 600, others closer to 500. Either way, it's been a long time. Experts reckon it's connected to last week's 8.8 magnitude earthquake in the region.

With six months to go, Winter Games organisers say they'll be ready

Six months before the start of the Winter Olympics, Italian organisers say that, after years of ups and downs, they are on schedule. "Preparations are progressing steadily and according to the timeline we have set," Andrea Varnier, the chief executive officer of Milan-Cortina 2026 Olympic and Paralympic Organising Committee, told AFP. The Olympic opening ceremony is on February 6, though curling kicks off the action two days earlier. The Paralympics open a month later on March 6, though curling again breaks the ice two days beforehand. "We are currently in the core phase of operational implementation," said Varnier. Simico, the public company responsible for delivering the Olympic facilities, last week promised that "all the planned sports construction projects will be completed before the start of the Olympics". Organisers have made a point of delivering a low-cost Winter games after recent extravangances. Sochi, in Russia in 2014, cost at least $40 billion (34.5 bn euros at current exchange rates). Pyeongchang, in South Korea in 2018, came in at over $12 bn. The Covid-hit Games in Beijing in 2022 officially cost $4 bn, but financial analysts said that including infrastructure costs put the total at around $38bn. Milan-Cortina estimate their final bill will be 5.2 bn euros ($6 bn). Of that 3.5 bn euros is going on infrastructure and 1.7 bn euros on staging the Games. The Games are using a host of existing venues - emphasising the point by holding the closing ceremony in the almost 2,000-year-old Roman amphitheatre in Verona. Organisers say that avoiding new construction reduces not only costs but environmental impact. - 'Compex global event' - This approach also means the Games will stretch across northern Italy from Cortina in the Dolomites in the east 350 kilometres to the western suburbs of Milan, with other "clusters" spread through the Alps. "As with any complex global event, challenges are part of the process," said Varnier. "We are moving forward with confidence." One of the few new venues will be briefly the Milano Santa Giulia Ice Hockey Arena before assuming its intended role as the multi-purpose Eventim Arena after the Games. While organisers have managed to avoid being lumbered with a little-used speed-skating track by temporarily converting two exhibition halls at the Milan fair grounds, another group of sports with few participants created a political and construction headache. Because Italy did not have a track for the bobsleigh, luge, and skeleton events, organisers considered using existing sites in Austria or Switzerland. Matteo Salvini, the second-in-command and Minister of Transport in Giorgia Meloni's hard-right government, insisted in late 2023 that the events be held in Italy. That meant a breakneck race to build a track in Cortina. It was completed just in time for pre-approval in March. Accommodation, which often poses a logistical and financial problem for Olympic organisers, seems to be locked up. The Milan Village, six seven-storey buildings to be converted into university dorms after the Games, will be delivered in "early October" despite the recent legal troubles of its developer, the Coima group. In Cortina, 377 prefabricated modules will be installed by the end of October. - 'We'll be ready' - While it is not clear if Italy's ski star Federica Brignone, who won the overall World Cup and a world title last season but smashed her left leg, will be fit to compete, the organisers revealed in July the design of the medals she would be chasing. They will weigh 420 grams in bronze and 500 grams in gold and in silver. The designer promised the medals will endure better than a few of those from last year's Paris Games. Some 220 medals, which contained a small piece of scrap metal from the Eiffel Tower, had to be replaced because they quickly turned black or rusted. "We cannot allow what happened in Paris to happen again," said their designer Raffaella Panie. That leaves just one unknown. The Italian meteorological service, contacted by AFP, said it was unable to predict whether there would be enough snow next February. The organisers said they were not worried. "We'll be ready," they said.

In the hyper-curated world of Shein influencers, fast fashion is more than a wardrobe, it's a lifestyle. Boasting of 'Shein haul' purchases, the brand's fans dominate TikTok and Youtube, pointing out that new outfits can appear in a swipe, wrapped in plastic and delivered almost at the speed of scrolling. Online influencer culture means Shein remains popular in Australia, but behind the aesthetic, a backlash is brewing, and Italy and France are leading the way. On Monday, Italy slapped Shein with a €1 million ($1.7 million) "greenwashing" fine for misleading customers on the environmental impact of its products. The Chinese e-commerce giant also faces a possible €150 million ($267.8 million) in France for failing to properly get consent to track users on the internet. Italy's competition authority (AGCM) said the environmental sustainability and social responsibility claims promoted on Shein's website "were sometimes vague, generic, and/or overly emphatic, and in other cases omitted and misleading". Areas of the site under investigation included #SHEINTHEKNOW, evoluSHEIN and Social Responsibility. The Italian watchdog said it launched an investigation in September into the multi-billion-dollar company's "increased duty of care" for operating in a "highly polluting sector with highly polluting methods". In 2023, Shein's sustainability report revealed the company's carbon emissions had almost tripled in three years, making it the biggest polluter in the fashion industry. Over the past month, France has slapped Shein with fines which could potentially equal up to €190 million. In July, a French regulator faulted the fast-fashion retailer for using trackers to target advertising to users without the approval required in Europe. The brand could now face a possible €150 million fine. It also found during a 2023 inspection that when users refused the tracking cookies, Shein continued to read information from them. A final decision on fining the fast-fashion giant has not been announced. Shein called the proposed amount of the fine "disproportionate", in a statement sent to AFP. "Since August 2023 we have actively worked with the CNIL to ensure our compliance and respond to their queries," the firm said. Weeks earlier, France's antitrust agency fined Shein 40 million euros for alleged deceptive business practices. The agency said Infinite Style E-Commerce Co Ltd, which handles sales for the Shein brand, had misled customers about misleading discounts, and on its environmental impact, following a nearly year-long probe. The company accepted the fine. From TikTok hauls to Insta-ready aesthetics, Shein isn't just selling clothes, it's feeding a digital subculture of hyper-consumption and micro-influencers. On one end, Gen Z swarms social media with #sheinhauls, a hashtag with more than 1.1 million posts on Instagram alone. In the clips, influencers talk about clothing affordability — including $6 tops and $20 dresses — aspiration, and algorithm-fuelled style. Over 75 per cent of Shein shoppers are female, in line with the platform's biggest category, women's clothing. The online retailer is growing in popularity in Australia, earning a place in one of the top five websites for apparel and fashion, according to online analytics firm Semrush. Roy Morgan data also suggests Shein's shopper base in Australia grew by 34 per cent from October-December 2023 quarter to April-June 2024.
