In its maiden sitting outside Mumbai, State Cabinet honours Ahilyabai, woos Dhangars
The Maharashtra Cabinet on Tuesday, in its maiden sitting outside capital Mumbai, announced a bunch of decisions including ₹5,503 crore for the development of temples across the State, steps towards the Nashik Kumbh in 2027, and several initiatives for the Dhangar community.
The meeting was held in Chondi to mark the 300th birth anniversary of Indore queen Ahilyabai Holkar and her legacy. Chondi is the birthplace of the medieval queen. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that a sum of ₹681 crore has been sanctioned for the preservation of Ahilyabai's memorial in Chondi and a medical college, to be named Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar Government Medical College, and an Industrial Training Institute for girls will be set up in Ahilyanagar district.
The Cabinet also decided to make a feature film and release a special postal ticket and logo on Ahilyabai.
Kumbh Mela authority
Among other decisions, the Cabinet approved the framing of a law to set up an authority for the Nashik-Trimbakeshwar Kumbh Mela 2025. The Kumbh Mela Authority, which will be responsible for planning the mega congregation in Nashik district in 2027, will be formed on the lines of one in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.
In an outreach to the Dhangar community, the Cabinet approved a plan to enrol more Dhangar students in reputed residential schools. 'Around 31,300 students have been enrolled in 162 schools between 2021-22 and 2024-25 under the Raje Yashwantrao Holkar Mahamesh Yojana. We look forward to enrolling over 10,000 students,' said Mr. Fadnavis.
For years now, the Dhangar community has been demanding reservations under Scheduled Tribes category, which provides 7% quota, while they are currently receiving 3.5% reservation in education and jobs under the Nomadic Tribes category.

"You Didn't Plan, Truth Will Come Out": Minister Hardeep Puri To NDTV On Bengaluru Deaths
Quick Read Summary is AI generated, newsroom reviewed. Union Minister Hardeep Puri blamed the Karnataka government for lack of planning that resulted in 11 deaths when fans thronged the Chinnaswamy stadium to celebrate Royal Challengers Bengaluru's title win in IPL. Union Minister Hardeep Puri on Friday blamed the Bengaluru stampede deaths on a lack of planning by the Karnataka government, when 11 people died in a crowd crush outside a Bengaluru stadium, as tens of thousands turned up to cheer Royal Challengers Bengaluru's title win in the Indian Premier League (IPL) earlier this week. "I totally agree with the criticism that the BJP has levelled against that state government. You know, I come from an old school where one life lost is one life too many. And these are innocent people. You didn't plan it, now you are trying to pass the blame on to someone else," Mr Puri told NDTV. The euphoria of the vast crowds ended in disaster when 11 mainly young fans died in a stampede near M Chinnaswamy Stadium, where the RCB players were parading the trophy. "It's not very clear what advice you were given. The uniformed people had also turned around and said that they had advised against holding it without adequate preparation. But it's very sad. But I think people should learn a lesson," said the Minister. Bengaluru Police Commissioner, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's political secretary K Govindaraj and head of the information department, Hemant Nimbalkar, are among those who have been suspended since Wednesday, the day of the tragedy. "This is one of those knee-jerk, quick things," said Mr Puri on the suspensions, adding, " ki kisi ko blame kar do isme (that you blame someone for this), you know, try and get away with it." On Thursday, in an interview to NDTV, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar said he can't express the pain that "we are suffering" over the deaths and that the state government is "very sorry". "Can't express the pain that I am suffering. Never expected this to happen. Entire state was watching. We are very sorry," Mr Shivakumar said, adding that he does not want to politicise the issue. All the victims of the stampede tragedy are under 40, with a 14-year-old girl being the youngest. Not naming anyone in particular, Mr Puri said "truth will come out". "I will tell you something about India. Whenever something like this happens, you will be very clear that the truth will come out. You can't get away with this. And then blaming wahape bhi hua (it happened there also). What kind of nonsense is this? They will have to pay a price for this," said Mr Puri. The " wahan pe hua (it happened there)" is a reference used by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to draw comparisons with other tragedies such as the Kumbh Mela stampede. "Many such stampedes have occurred. Even worse ones have happened. I am not defending this, but similar incidents occurred during the Kumbh Mela, where around 50 to 60 people died," Siddaramaiah had said.

Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge on Friday addressed the recent stampede incident in Bengaluru, stating that the officers responsible have been suspended and a magisterial enquiry has been ordered to investigate the matter. While speaking to reporters, Kharge said, "The officers who are responsible have been suspended. We have made no scapegoats... A magisterial enquiry has been ordered and our next action will be according to the findings of the enquiry..." Responding to criticism from the BJP, Kharge hit back saying, "BJP wants the CM, DCM, and the Home Minister to resign, so going by that same logic, Yogi Adityanath must resign, Amit Shah must resign for the Pahalgam attack, S Jaishankar must resign for the failure of foreign policy, and PM Narendra Modi must also resign for misleading the whole country..." We don't even know how many people died. We are at least owning up to our mistake and taking responsibility... We are not hiding casualties...," Kharge said, adding, "Terrorists come into India and shoot down 26 people, and we don't even know where the terrorists are, but no one asks for the resignation of the Home Minister Amit Shah" He acknowledged that the state government could have planned better, "Yes, we could have planned better and done things in a better way, and we are looking into it..." Live Events On Thursday, Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge admitted that the stampede near M. Chinnaswamy Stadium , which caused the death of 11 people, could have been prevented with better planning and coordination. Speaking to media persons, Kharge said, "Yes, there has been a mistake. This could have been avoided with better planning and coordination. A stadium with a capacity of 35,000 people, but 2-3 lakh people, poured out on the streets. Although we did our best, we were unable to manage the crowd." He added that the Chief Minister has taken responsibility for the incident and assured that corrective measures will be implemented. Kharge also accused the BJP of politicising the tragedy. "BJP likes to politicise everything. The same BJP, when told that a victory parade on an open bus in such a short time was not possible due to a lack of time to make arrangements, said that we were insulting the team. Now that post is deleted. BJP's intention of politicising everything is not healthy," he said. Following the death of 11 people in the stampede at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on June 4, the Karnataka police have suspended multiple IPS officers, including the Bengaluru city police Commissioner, B Dayananda. Senior IPS officer Seemant Kumar Singh took charge as the city police commissioner earlier today. Apart from Dayananda, Additional Commissioner of Police Vikash Kumar Vikash, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Shekhar HT, Assistant Commissioner of Police Balakrishna and Cubbon Park Police Inspector Girish AK were also suspended with immediate effect. Notably, Karnataka Police filed an FIR against the Karnataka Cricket Board Administrative Committee , Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), among others, in the Bengaluru stampede incident.' In response, KSCA has filed a writ petition in the High Court seeking the quashing of FIRs filed against it. KSCA board of directors, including President Raghuram Bhat, Secretary A. Shankar, Treasurer E.S. Jairam, appealed for the cancellation of the FIR. The hearing on the petition will be held today in the afternoon by a bench of Justice Krishna Kumar.
