Travis Kelce has returned to the field for the first game of his 13th NFL season
The tight end and his fellow Kansas City Chiefs kicked off the 2025-2026 season with a preseason opener against the Arizona Cardinals on Saturday, Aug. 9

Travis Kelce, returning from a whirlwind offseason, kicked off his 13th season in the NFL as he and the Kansas City Chiefs opened their preseason with a game against the Arizona Cardinals in Glendale, Ariz., on Saturday, Aug. 9.
The number 13 happens to have a special connection to Travis' girlfriend, Taylor Swift. The pop superstar, whose birthday is Dec. 13, considers 13 to be her lucky number and has featured it in her song lyrics, music videos and more.
The Chiefs got off to a roaring start in the game, with Jason Brownlee scoring a touchdown just minutes into the first quarter. As the wide receiver — who is playing his first season with the Chiefs — celebrated with a little dance by the end zone, several of his teammates, including quarterback Patrick Mahomes and Travis, 35, could be seen high-fiving him.
The Chiefs shared a video of the moment on X, captioning the post, "First celly of the year."
Travis spent the offseason focused on getting leaner and faster, and told reporters in May that he had dropped 25 lbs. Head coach Andy Reid noted Travis' improved fitness in a training camp press conference on July 24, saying, "He looks like he's 20. He's doing a great job. He's in great shape.'
Since the Chiefs' crushing loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX back in February, Travis has largely kept a low profile, focusing on workouts and occasional trips and outings with Swift, 35.
Notably, he attended his annual Tight End University training camp, and Swift made a special appearance at the event. He also recorded new episodes of his podcast, New Heights, with his brother, Jason Kelce, and appeared in Happy Gilmore 2, making a cameo alongside a star-studded cast.
On July 24, Travis 'hard-launched' his relationship with Swift by featuring her on his Instagram for the first time in their two years together. He wrote in the caption, "Had some adventures this offseason, kept it 💯."
The Chiefs' official Instagram account shared some love, commenting on the post: "Things we love to see: travis happy 🥹❤️."
Swift, who attended 10 Chiefs games in the 2024-25 season, did not appear to be in attendance at Saturday's game in Arizona.

NFL holdouts, contract negotiation tracker: James Cook returns to practice, but Bills stop short of saying all is well
NFL training camp season is officially upon us, which means holdout/hold-in season is too as players seek new contracts. Bills running back James Cook finally returned to practice on Tuesday, nine days after he stopped practicing citing "business," presumably in regard to the new contract he wants. Cook indicated on social media back in February he wants to be paid $15 million a year, which would tie him for third-highest paid back in the NFL. He skipped voluntary offseason activities but did show up for mandatory minicamp in June, then reported to training camp on time and practiced the first eight days before beginning his hold-in. Head coach Sean McDermott said he expected Cook to practice on Tuesday, and that's exactly what happened. 'I would say that things have changed,' McDermott said. 'We have had conversations with James, good conversations, as I've mentioned before.' But does that mean the hold-in is officially over? 'Too early to go there,' McDermott said. Cook has been present for team meetings and walkthroughs during his hold-in. So this contract standoff appears to be progressing toward a conclusion, at least for now. What about the others? Are they progressing or stuck in neutral? Let's take a look. Buffalo Bills RB James Cook: Progressing Tuesday was a step forward for Cook and the Bills, on however big or small a level. Josh Allen and other Bills players publicly have Cook's back. It may go without saying, considering Cook's past two Pro Bowl seasons, but Buffalo sounds willing to make a deal too. "We tried to get something done with Jimbo, and unfortunately, you know, it's got— it takes two," GM Brandon Beane said on Aug. 4. 'And both sides have to agree on what that number is, and obviously, that hasn't gotten there. But, I'm not sitting here saying 'You don't pay running backs.' I think you just have to find what the sweet spot is.' Cincinnati Bengals pass rusher Trey Hendrickson: Progressing Did you watch the same preseason opener we did? Where the Eagles' backups on offense tore through the Bengals' starters on defense? Yeah. Couple that with Hendrickson remaining engaged while holding in, and we're calling this one progressing toward a deal. The Bengals' need is clear as day. San Francisco 49ers WR Jauan Jennings: Progressing We'll tag this one as "progressing" too, considering head coach Kyle Shanahan indicated Monday that Brandon Aiyuk likely won't play until a month into the season, at least. There was also yet another injury to the 49ers' wide receiver room this week. Jennings reportedly did a light workout on Monday, but hasn't practiced since reportedly aggravating a calf injury on July 27 and is seeking a new contract. With the 49ers running thin at the position, it might motivate a deal to be done sooner than later. Dallas Cowboys pass rusher Micah Parsons: Stuck in neutral "I think it's unbelievable that there have been zero contract talks between Micah Parsons and the Dallas Cowboys," ESPN's Adam Schefter said Monday. "There has been no progress and you have to wonder where this is going." That sounds dire. This should be an open-and-shut negotiation. Parsons is 26, younger than all the other market-resetting pass rushers who've recently agreed to new deals. He can make a solid argument he's better than all of them. And the Cowboys' defense desperately needs him. The only reason this isn't regressing is because Jerry Jones sent this whole negotiation into a tailspin on the opening day of camp with his meandering season-opening media conference, and it's only stayed silly and unnecessary from there. Dallas has a history of getting deals done late. We're leaning on that here, but boy is it getting shaky. Washington Commanders WR Terry McLaurin: Stuck in neutral From Yahoo Sports Senior NFL Reporter Charles Robinson, who swung through Commanders camp this past weekend: How far apart are the two sides? Everyone is keeping the numbers tight, but the details seep out in the contract comparables. On one side, it's the four-year, $132 million extension the Pittsburgh Steelers slotted to DK Metcalf this offseason, which included $60 million guaranteed. The other side is a little more tricky, but consider it a slightly richer version of the the four-year $92 million extension reached between Courtland Sutton and the Denver Broncos, which had $41 million in guarantees. It's not perfect apples to apples, but it gives you an idea of the divide between McLaurin and the Commanders. The key difference in the Metcalf and Sutton deals, aside from the significant divide in guaranteed money and annual average salary ($33 million AAV vs. $23 million AAV), is the fact that Metcalf signed his at 27 years old and with a Steelers team that was extremely (maybe desperately) motivated to keep him for a long period. Conversely, the Broncos did a risk-averse deal with a soon-to-be 30-year-old Sutton, who is at the horizon of his prime years. So the team and the player are still pretty far apart here. There's no outside indication teams are calling to make big offers for McLaurin, so the Commanders have some negotiating power here. Though entering a year with such big expectations — especially for Jayden Daniels, and McLaurin was a big part of his incredible rookie season — it's not an ideal situation at all.

Travis Kelce says NFL career ‘slipped' during acting pivot: ‘Haven't been to my standard'
Travis Kelce will be the first to admit the last two NFL seasons have not been his finest. During a wide-ranging GQ interview about his career and relationship with Taylor Swift, the three-time Super Bowl champion with the Chiefs expressed how the 'past two years haven't been to [his] standard' as he dabbled in entertainment endeavors off the field. 'I think it might have slipped a little bit because I did have a little bit more focus in trying to set myself up. And opportunities came up where I was excited to venture into a new world of acting and being an entertainer,' Kelce, 35, said in the September issue of the publication. FX 'I don't say this as 'I shouldn't have done it.' I'm just saying that my work ethic is such that I have so much pride in how I do things that I never want the product to tail off, and I feel like these past two years haven't been to my standard.' Advertisement Ahead of the 2024 season, the future Hall of Fame tight end was tapped to host the Amazon game show 'Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity' and dabbled in the TV dramatics of Ryan Murphy's 'Grotesquerie.' Getty Images Advertisement When the Chiefs officially kicked off their 2024 campaign last fall, Kelce — who failed to eclipse 1,000 receiving yards the previous season (984), a feat he had accomplished every year since 2016 — became a non-factor on offense, triggering an onslaught of criticism about whether his focus was elsewhere. Although Kelce showed he had plenty left in the tank in January, when the Chiefs punched their ticket to a third straight Super Bowl, the defending champs were rattled by the Eagles on the NFL's biggest stage in February with a lopsided 40-22 defeat. The fallout has only fueled Kelce's fire as he prepares for his 13th season. 6 Travis Kelce during the Chiefs' preseason matchup against the Cardinals on Aug. 9, 2025. Mark J. 'He's svelte right now,' coach Andy Reid said at the start of training camp last month. 'He looks like he's 20. He's doing a good job. He's in great shape.' Kelce, who tallied 97 receptions for 823 yards and three touchdowns in the regular season last year, will visit Brazil in the Chiefs' season-opening clash against the Chargers on Sept. 5.

Seahawks 3rd RB battle: Holani, Wright, Martinez, Anthony Tyus III, Pass Protection
The Seattle Seahawks running back room has a clear leader in Kenneth Walker III and a clear backup in Zach Charbonnet, but there are six total backs fighting for about 3-4 roster spots and 1 practice squad spot. There were high hopes for 2022 Georgia National Champion Kenny McIntosh entering this season before he tore his ACL in training camp last week. Although he'll miss the 2025 season now, he still has potential in 2026 and beyond. Fullback Robbie Ouzts - the Seahawks 5th Round pick out of 2025 National Champion runner up Notre Dame - looked awesome in the preseason opener and is a lock for a roster spot and immediate role in this offense moving forward. That leaves George Holani, Damien Martinez, Jacardia Wright, and Anthony Tyus III fighting for the 3rd-4th string active roster spots. Here's how I see them in the position battle so far: George Holani George Holani managed to stick around in the position battle last offseason to earn a practice squad spot as an undrafted free agent out of Boise State. He was activated on December 26, 2024 when Walker went down and was on the 53-man to close the season out. He had an awesome preseason opener to the tune of 61 yards and a touchdown on 7 carries (good for 8.7 yards per carry). He looks the most ready to lead the backfield tomorrow in case of emergency to the top two backs. Jacardia Wright I wanted to talk about Jacardia Wright second purely on the fact that he got going in the first game and I want to give credit where it's due. He earned himself 7 carries by getting to 34 yards (4.9 ypc) and even had a few big runs called back due to holding. As an undrafted free agent out of Missouri State, he's a longshot to make the 53-man roster in Week 1 because he's easier to move to the practice squad than a Martinez or Holani, but he looks like a perfect RB4/5 who's getting comfortable in the system- to be brought up by an NFL team at some point this season, like Holani did last year. Damien Martinez Damien Martinez was a 7th Round pick this season, but similar to Kenny McIntosh, seemed to have 2nd to 3rd Round potential at points in college. He couldn't get going in the preseason opener with just 10 yards on 6 carries but had three seasons averaging 6.3 ypc or more in college between Oregon State and Miami. He was regarded as one of the top backs in the country with the Beavers and 247Sports ranked him as the number 2 running back in the transfer portal behind only Quinshon Judkins before he signed with the Hurricanes. Clint Brewster ranked him as a 4-star recruit which projects as a Round 2-3 NFL pick, and he had his best year yet at the U- but off-field issues caused him to slide in a loaded draft class this year, and the Seahawks ended up with a rare level of talent in Martinez at the 223rd pick. Field Gulls' Alexandre Castro wrote an awesome deep dive analyzing why his pick fits the Seahawks and how he can deliver so much value. Although he didn't get going in the opener, he ticks all the boxes as an NFL rusher. Anthony Tyus III Anthony Tyus III is an undrafted rookie from the Ohio Bobcats who the Seahawks picked up just last week. He rushed for 1,215 yards and nine touchdowns in 2024, averaging 5.1 yards per carry and being named to the All-MAC Second Team. Since Tyus is less of a known commodity, it's hard to predict how he would make a big enough impression to beat out other backs in the next two preseason games, but he'd be another practice squad candidate if he can stand out in some way. Pass Protection I had to save the most important aspect of the 3rd running back battle for last- pass protection. Yes, it gets its own heading! Because it's one thing Walker and Charbonnet don't do at an elite level that this team needs at this spot. While great rushers go unsigned regularly, great pass protectors like Travis Homer always get paid. This might be the true key to being the third back. And it just so happens that Damien Martinez could be the personal bodyguard Sam Darnold needs. Just watch this video of him Corbin K. Smith Tweeted two weeks ago and you'll be amped up:
