Seahawks 3rd RB battle: Holani, Wright, Martinez, Anthony Tyus III, Pass Protection
There were high hopes for 2022 Georgia National Champion Kenny McIntosh entering this season before he tore his ACL in training camp last week. Although he'll miss the 2025 season now, he still has potential in 2026 and beyond.
Fullback Robbie Ouzts - the Seahawks 5th Round pick out of 2025 National Champion runner up Notre Dame - looked awesome in the preseason opener and is a lock for a roster spot and immediate role in this offense moving forward.
That leaves George Holani, Damien Martinez, Jacardia Wright, and Anthony Tyus III fighting for the 3rd-4th string active roster spots. Here's how I see them in the position battle so far:
George Holani
George Holani managed to stick around in the position battle last offseason to earn a practice squad spot as an undrafted free agent out of Boise State. He was activated on December 26, 2024 when Walker went down and was on the 53-man to close the season out. He had an awesome preseason opener to the tune of 61 yards and a touchdown on 7 carries (good for 8.7 yards per carry). He looks the most ready to lead the backfield tomorrow in case of emergency to the top two backs.
Jacardia Wright
I wanted to talk about Jacardia Wright second purely on the fact that he got going in the first game and I want to give credit where it's due. He earned himself 7 carries by getting to 34 yards (4.9 ypc) and even had a few big runs called back due to holding. As an undrafted free agent out of Missouri State, he's a longshot to make the 53-man roster in Week 1 because he's easier to move to the practice squad than a Martinez or Holani, but he looks like a perfect RB4/5 who's getting comfortable in the system- to be brought up by an NFL team at some point this season, like Holani did last year.
Damien Martinez
Damien Martinez was a 7th Round pick this season, but similar to Kenny McIntosh, seemed to have 2nd to 3rd Round potential at points in college. He couldn't get going in the preseason opener with just 10 yards on 6 carries but had three seasons averaging 6.3 ypc or more in college between Oregon State and Miami. He was regarded as one of the top backs in the country with the Beavers and 247Sports ranked him as the number 2 running back in the transfer portal behind only Quinshon Judkins before he signed with the Hurricanes. Clint Brewster ranked him as a 4-star recruit which projects as a Round 2-3 NFL pick, and he had his best year yet at the U- but off-field issues caused him to slide in a loaded draft class this year, and the Seahawks ended up with a rare level of talent in Martinez at the 223rd pick. Field Gulls' Alexandre Castro wrote an awesome deep dive analyzing why his pick fits the Seahawks and how he can deliver so much value. Although he didn't get going in the opener, he ticks all the boxes as an NFL rusher.
Anthony Tyus III
Anthony Tyus III is an undrafted rookie from the Ohio Bobcats who the Seahawks picked up just last week. He rushed for 1,215 yards and nine touchdowns in 2024, averaging 5.1 yards per carry and being named to the All-MAC Second Team. Since Tyus is less of a known commodity, it's hard to predict how he would make a big enough impression to beat out other backs in the next two preseason games, but he'd be another practice squad candidate if he can stand out in some way.
Pass Protection
I had to save the most important aspect of the 3rd running back battle for last- pass protection. Yes, it gets its own heading! Because it's one thing Walker and Charbonnet don't do at an elite level that this team needs at this spot.
While great rushers go unsigned regularly, great pass protectors like Travis Homer always get paid. This might be the true key to being the third back. And it just so happens that Damien Martinez could be the personal bodyguard Sam Darnold needs.

Brian Robinson trade destinations: 49ers, Cowboys among best fits
Brian Robinson has been a key part of the Washington Commanders' rushing attack since the team selected him in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft. That could change ahead of the 2025 NFL season. Fox Sports' Jordan Schultz reports the Commanders are "shopping" Robinson to teams around the league. Robinson (6-1, 228 pounds) is coming off a season that saw him post career-highs in rushing yards (799), rushing touchdowns (8) and yards per carry (4.3). The big-bodied bruiser served as the leader of Washington's backfield-by-committee approach, which also featured Austin Ekeler, Jeremy McNichols and Chris Rodriguez Jr. The Commanders retained all four of those backs for 2025 and also added seventh-round rookie Jacory Croskey-Merritt to the mix. Robinson is entering the final year of his rookie contract, worth a base value of just over $3.4 million, so Washington might be attempting to trade him to thin a crowded running back room and retain value for the free agent-to-be. Will the Commanders be able to find a taker for Robinson? Here's a look at a few teams that could hold interest in the 26-year-old running back. San Francisco 49ers The 49ers have a great lead back in Christian McCaffrey, but they could use depth behind the 29-year-old star. Projected backup Isaac Guerendo and fifth-round rookie Jordan James are both dealing with injuries that could impact their early season availability. Robinson's mix of size and power would complement McCaffrey – a more elusive runner – well. Commanders general manager Adam Peters also used to work in the 49ers' front office, so perhaps that could help get a deal done. Dallas Cowboys The Cowboys are projected to rely on a committee of Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders at running back early in the season. The two combined for 718 yards and six touchdowns on 194 carries last season; by comparison, Robinson totaled 799 yards and eight touchdowns himself on 187 carries. As such, Robinson would represent a big upgrade for the Cowboys. But would Washington be willing to trade one of its leading rushers to a divisional rival? The Commanders would probably like to send Robinson somewhere else if they trade him, but if Dallas has the best offer, they could consider it. TRADE DESTINATIONS: Texans, Eagles among best fits for Trey Hendrickson Houston Texans Joe Mixon's status for Week 1 is uncertain as he deals with a foot injury. Houston signed Nick Chubb in free agency, but it isn't clear whether he will be able to handle a full workload as he continues to come back from a catastrophic knee injury that limited him to a career-worst 3.3 yards per carry last season. The Texans could rely on Dameon Pierce and rookie fourth-round pick Woody Marks to help support Chubb, but acquiring a proven runner to support C.J. Stroud might be the better move. Kansas City Chiefs The Chiefs made it to the Super Bowl last season despite Isiah Pacheco and Kareem Hunt averaging 3.7 and 3.6 yards per carry, respectively, during the season. Pacheco might bounce back as he gets further removed from a broken leg, but adding Robinson as insurance wouldn't be a bad move for the Chiefs. Robinson's hard-nosed running style would fit the mold the Chiefs have sought in running backs in recent seasons. He's also bigger than both Pacheco and Hunt and could help keep the more explosive Pacheco fresh as part of a rotation. Los Angeles Chargers Is Najee Harris healthy after he suffered an eye injury in a fireworks accident? Are Jim Harbaugh and Greg Roman willing to trust Kimani Vidal and Hassan Haskins to play in tandem with first-round rookie Omarion Hampton until Harris can return? If the answer to either of those questions is no, the Chargers might look to add a veteran running back to provide extra depth in their run-heavy offense. Robinson would be a great, like-for-like replacement for his former Alabama teammate Harris and could allow Los Angeles to slow-play the 2021 first-round pick's return.

To say that there is a lot of hype now surrounding Williams again would be an understatement. "MVP loading," one fan wrote. A second fan commented, "Not bad for just two series. Imagine what he'd do with a full game. The kid's got talent." "He looked crazy good," a third fan chimed in. Another fan said, "Future Super Bowl champion." "I've been saying he better than burrow," a fifth comment read. There were plenty of comments that also pointed out the fact that Williams played a preseason game. No one should be taking too much positive or negative away from a preseason game. Even with that being said, it was a dominant showing from the young signal caller. The Bears feel very confident in him and have chosen to build around him. New head coach Ben Johnson should also help Williams level up during the 2025 season. Last season as a rookie, Williams completed 62.5 percent of his pass attempts for 3,541 yards, 20 touchdowns, and six interceptions, while also rushing for 489 yards on 81 attempts. Those numbers warranted much more patience than fans gave him after a few videos of him struggling in camp. It will be interesting to see what the 2025 season has in store for Williams. At least for tonight, he has silenced his critics with a very dominant showing in his second-year preseason debut. For more on the Chicago Bears and general NFL news, head over to Newsweek Sports.

49ers Could Face NFL Punishment Over Brandon Aiyuk Decision
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk is likely itching to get back on the field after suffering a season-ending injury in Week 7 last season, but he and the team may have broken an NFL rule as he works his way back from a torn ACL and MCL. Prior to San Francisco's 22-19 preseason win over the Las Vegas Raiders on Saturday, Aiyuk was seen catching passes from quarterback Brock Purdy. "Obviously he looks great physically, progressing in the right way with his knee," Purdy said, via the San Francisco Chronicle. "But more than anything, man, you can tell he wants to get back out there and compete, which I love." More NFL: 49ers Lose Bidding War to NFC Rival for Former Second-Round WR And while that might not seem like anything egregious on the surface, it's a decision that could come back to bite the 49ers, according to NBC Sports Bay Area's Matt Maiocco on the latest episode of "49ers Talk." "If you were there early, you got to see Brandon Aiyuk running some routes," co-host Jennifer Lee Chan said. "Brock Purdy gave him a lot of compliments, he's saying he has a great mindset, and I think he's on his way for sure." "I don't know that that's allowed, to have a PUP player running routes and catching passes from the quarterback, whether it's at practice or in the game," Maiocco added. "So, maybe the 49ers will be hearing from the NFL on that one." Violations of this rule could result in "a fine on the involved club, fines or suspensions of involved individuals, as well as the possible forfeiture of draft choices by the involved club." Aiyuk could face a personal fine of $25,000 and the 49ers a fine of $75,000, according to the Sporting News. The 49ers are expected to be without Aiyuk for the first third of the season—head coach Kyle Shanahan recently told reporters the $120 million wide receiver likely won't return until Week 6 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers—leaving the team to rely on Jauan Jennings, Ricky Pearsall, and Jacob Cowing plus journeymen Russell Gage, Demarcus Robinson, and Robbie Chosen.
