Bruno Fernandes turns down lucrative Al Hilal offer to stay at Man United

MUNICH — Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has turned down a proposed move to Saudi club Al Hilal because he wants 'to play at the highest possible level.' Fernandes confirmed Tuesday that he had received an 'exciting offer' from the Riyadh-based club to switch after what was a disappointing season for United. 'They waited for me to think about my future, because I said only if Manchester thought it was the time to move on, that I'd be willing to do so,' Fernandes said through an interpreter. 'I talked to the gaffer, Ruben Amorim, and at the time he asked me not to go. I then talked to Man United. They said they didn't want to sell me. If I wanted to go, I could, but they didn't need the money, they didn't need to sell me.' Media reports suggested Al Hilal was prepared to pay 100 million pounds to take the 30-year-old Fernandes from United while offering him a wage of 700,000 pounds per week to play for the Saudi Pro League team. 'It was a very exciting offer,' Fernandes said. 'The president of Al Hilal, he was very nice to me. He talked to my manager but then I talked to my wife and as a family we wanted to see what I wanted to do. She asked me, what do you want to do with your future?' Fernandes last year signed a contract extension to stay at Old Trafford until June 2027. This season did not go as planned as the Red Devils failed to qualify for the Champions League after finishing 15th in the Premier League, while it also endured the heartbreak of losing the Europa League final to Tottenham. 'We had goals and we didn't meet them,' said Fernandes, a key figure for United since his arrival in January 2020. He said it would have been easy for the family to make the move to Riyadh, and for him to adjust to the team with Portugal teammates Rúben Neves and João Cancelo already playing for Al Hilal. 'I'm used to them, but I want to play at the highest possible level," he said. "I want play for major competitions. I know I still can, and I want to be happy doing the thing I love the most. And for better or worse, I'm still very passionate about football. This is how I see football. This is how I see my life and my future, and I'm happy about the decision I made.' Fernandes was speaking as a Portugal player before the team's Nations League semifinal against Germany on Wednesday in Munich. The winner of that game will face either France or Spain in Sunday's final. soccer: /hub/soccer

Soccer-Fernandes rejects Al-Hilal offer to stay at Manchester United

June 3 - Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes turned down the opportunity to join Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal in order to keep playing "at the highest level", he said on Tuesday. The Portuguese midfielder admitted that he had considered the move, which media reports said was worth four times his current salary, after being contacted by Al-Hilal's president. "There was that possibility, the president of Al-Hilal called me a month ago to ask me about it," Fernandes, who is preparing to face Germany with Portugal, told reporters on Tuesday. "It was a big offer, very ambitious. There was a waiting period for me to think about the future." Fernandes ultimately decided to stay at United and said he was motivated by his desire to continue playing at the top level and encouraged by his family and the club's coach Ruben Amorim. "I would be willing to do it if Manchester United thought so," Fernandes added. "I spoke to the coach Ruben Amorim who really tried to talk me out of it. The club said they would not be willing to sell me, only if I wanted to leave. "I spoke to my wife and family, and she asked me what my personal goals were in my career. "It would have been easy to move there but I want to keep myself at the highest level, playing in the big competitions and I feel capable of it. I am happy with my decision." The 30-year-old Fernandes scored 19 goals and provided 19 assists in 57 appearances across all competitions for United last season, winning the club's Player of the Year award for the fourth time. However, it was a season to forget for the team, as they finished 15th in the Premier League, their lowest league finish in half a century, and lost the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur.

'Every Point Will Matter', Says Hardik Singh Ahead Of FIH Pro League European Leg

Last Updated: Hardik said that the side looks to leave it all out on the field at the upcoming engagements in their effort to clinch the top spot in the FIH Pro League. India are gearing up for their FIH Pro League assignments in the European leg of the event, as the men in blue are slated to take on Netherland and Argentina, both double headers, at the Wagner Stadium in Amstelveen, before squaring up against Australia and Belgium at Antwerp. India will take on the Dutch hosts on the 7th and 8th of June followed by Argentina on the 11th and 12th in Amstelveen, and will go on to take on Australia on the 14th and 15th and Belgium on the 21st and 22nd of July. Indian player Hardik Singh said that the side looks to leave it all out on the field at the upcoming engagements in their effort to secure qualification to the World Cup next year in addition to clinching the top spot in the FIH Pro League. 'We have spoken about this within the squad and believe that if we stick to the plan, accumulate enough points, and push for wins –even securing points from draws and subsequent shootouts — we stand a great chance of qualifying for the World Cup through the Pro League," Hardik began. Team India stand third in the standings ahead of the Euopean leg of the league, and Hardik opined that the upcoming fixtures across the seas would be crucial in catapulting to the qualification places. 'Belgium and the Netherlands qualify automatically as co-hosts of the FIH Men's Hockey World Cup in 2026. That leaves England, who are on top, along with Germany and Spain, as the key competitors vying for qualification," he added. 'Our matches against Argentina will also be crucial. This is a good challenge for us to have, and qualifying early would give us more time to prepare for the World Cup," Hardik added. Hardik, emphasized on the intense training the team has gone through at their camp in Bengaluru, notably in terms of fitness and conditioning, in preparation for the overseas matchups. 'The sessions have been nothing short of rigorous," the 26-year-old said. 'We have really been put through the grind by the coach and Alan (Scientific Advisor). Our strength and conditioning have been on point, mainly because we want to be at our peak for back-to-back matches," the star added. 'We practically have no rest days between games, and even when we do, we'll be travelling from the Netherlands to Belgium," he enumerated. Team India, who have amassed 15 points in the congoing campaign are placed behind England and Belgium, who have 16 points apiece, and Hardik reflected on the essence of the upcoming fixtures in the context of qualification. 'Every point in these six matches will matter. Another exciting aspect of this campaign is that the matches are being played at the same venues where the World Cup will be held next year. 'This gives us a better understanding of what to expect. We're treating this like a World Cup simulation, and that makes this outing even more important for our squad," Hardik signed off.
