A CULT-classic car which was dropped in the 1990s is now set to make a comeback as a modern-day 4x4, as the manufacturer hints at the 'next chapter'.
The original Fiat Panda was seen as a go-anywhere supermini and became a hit with its loyal band of fans.

Now, with the Italian firm's fast-growing line-up the dinky motor is being turned into the Fiat Grande Panda 4x4.
The original Panda 4x4 first hit our streets in 1983 and thanks to its raised height and rugged styling elements it soon became a cult classic, seen as an affordable off-roader.
The new Grande Panda forms the base of the revived concept and is being offered with both 111bhp electric and 108bhp 1.2-litre mild-hybrid petrol powertrains.
It will be part of Stellantis's new Smart Car platform, designed to appeal to cost-conscious drivers.
Fiat hasn't yet officially confirmed its production intent but has billed the Grande Panda 4x4 as 'the next chapter' and a 'potential true symbol of versatility, reliability and freedom'.
Fiat Europe boss Gaetano Thorel hasn't officially confirmed the machine would reach production, but said: "Surely we will have this car on the road in the future – but not tomorrow,' reports Autocar.
Mr Thorel did add that there had been demand for a 4x4 version since the Grande Panda was first unveiled and that the company wanted to meet that demand.
Full details about the vehicle's powertrain haven't been revealed, Fiat has referred to it as offering an 'electrified innovative rear axle'.
Fiat engineers are still working on the potential four-wheel-drive powertrain and refused to give details on whether any production 4x4 would be electric or combustion-based.
Fiat insiders have hinted it would have an electric motor powering the rear axle and use the Smart Car platform, reports the motoring magazine.

Details of that unit's size though have yet to be confirmed.
There is speculation it could be a smaller e-axle which adds supplementary power, when needed.
The car's rival, the Dacia Duster 4x4, uses a similar mild-hybrid arrangement.
Fiat's Grande Panda 4x4 concept also incorporates several bespoke design cues, such as dark red paint which hints at a special edition of the Panda 4x4.
It also features steel wheels, special graphics on the doors which underscore the stamped Panda lettering and hint at traditional off-roader body cladding.
There's also a protective underbody skidplate and a roof rack.
Fiat has also hinted that any production model would 'most likely feature other accessories'.
The intention is to eventually position the Grande Panda as a global car and to manufacture it in factories on three continents.
In order to meet those global requirements, it can utilise a number of powertrains including a manual pure ICE, a hybrid, full electric and even LPG.
The manual ICE is set to launch in Europe later this year but it is not expected to be available in the UK at first due to the extra costs of right-hand drive conversion.

The Ballymoney man had won the last six Supersport TT races on Yamaha R6 machinery, but he acquired a World Supersport Panigale V2 machine for 2025 and delivered the Italian manufacturer's first win at the TT since 1995, when Robert Holden won the Singles race. Dunlop, who was a Supersport winner on the Milwaukee Ducati at last month's North West 200, found himself over seven seconds down after the first lap of the three-lap race. However, he gradually reeled in leader Dean Harrison (Honda Racing UK) and went close to breaking his lap record for the class, recording a blistering speed of 130.313mph on the final lap. In the end, Dunlop was a dominant winner, pulling a gap of 10.229s over Englishman Harrison to open his account at TT 2025. It was a confidence-boosting end to the day for Dunlop, who had earlier missed out on a Superbike win by only 1.296s to Davey Todd. 'I think more importantly it's another manufacturer,' said Dunlop of his 30th win around the Mountain Course, where he holds the record for the most victories with different manufacturers – now seven in total after adding Ducati to his past wins for BMW, Suzuki, Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki and Paton. 'Obviously, the Milwaukee guys really wanted to make an effort with the Ducati and they wanted to win around the TT, and they had all faith in me to have a go. 'The boys have built a lovely wee bike. It was just hard to get used to the bike because it's a V-twin, but obviously the main thing for me is to win for all the boys and especially for Ducati. It's nice to get them back to the top.' Dunlop was left stung by his narrow defeat in the Superbike opener and was determined to come out with all guns blazing in the first of two Supersport races scheduled this week. 'I got my s**t together and got on with it. I just knew it kept coming,' he said. 'It was a bit like the big bike, we haven't had a lot of laps, especially here with a brand new motorbike. 'And obviously to win on a new motorbike I knew it was going to be hard with the little laps we've had in practice and the characteristics of the bike, but just big hats off to the lads. 'The wee bike is dinging away nicely – it just took me a lap to dial into it.' Harrison was 7.48s clear of Dunlop after the first lap but he was unable to match his rival's pace and says there is nothing more to come from his CBR600RR Honda. 'That's all it's got,' he said. 'We can't improve what we have. This is all we have here with us. 'That [Ducati] is a new-generation bike, we're 6mph down through the speed trap. We're not going to find any more power through the week, so we'll just do the same again in race two.' The duo were well clear of James Hillier on the Bournemouth Kawasaki, who was back on the TT podium for the first time since 2019. Hillier was more than 55 seconds down on race winner Dunlop, while Todd (Milenco by Padgett's Honda) claimed fourth. Josh Brookes (Jackson Racing Honda by Prosper2) and Rob Hodson (SMT Racing Yamaha) rounded out the top six ahead of James Hind (North Lincs Components Suzuki) and Dominic Herbertson (HRRC Gilbert Brown & Son Ducati). Paul Jordan from Magherafelt retired on the Jackson Racing Honda. The top ten was completed by 16-time TT winner Ian Hutchinson (MLav Racing Yamaha) and Conor Cummins (Burrows/RK Racing Ducati). Racing is set to continue today with the first Superstock race (10:45am) and the opening Supertwin race (2pm).

It's hoped that it will save both money and time for drivers and the planning committees. Lilian Greenwood, the Future of Roads Minister, announced the news. She said in an announcement: "More drivers will be able to save up to £1,100 a year as the government cuts red tape to make it easier than ever to install electric vehicle chargepoints." This saving is calculated for the comparative running cost of a petrol or diesel model. The minister is hoping that the new system will lead to more public charging points, encouraging drivers to go electric. There are currently an estimated 80,000 charge points in the UK. with one installed every 29 minutes according to the statement. In the last year alone, 18,000 sockets were installed in workplace carparks. Further incentives have been offered through a scheme that entitles those renting or owning a flat with on-street parking to receive £350 off the cost of installing a home charger. Some motorists seemed less than thrilled by the news, sharing their concerns on social media. Not only will this help with meeting climate targets, but they hope it will also create more jobs as part of their Plan for Change initiative. The government has already safeguarded 150,000 jobs in the industry through trade deals with the US, India and the EU. A further 1,000 jobs were created by an investment of £1 billion in a Sunderland-based gigafactory - the term for an electric vehicle manufacturing plant. Responding to the new changes, the Operations Director of Osprey Charging Network Lewis Gardiner, said: "This is a hugely welcome and practical change that will make a real difference on the ground. "Removing the need for planning permission for essential electrical infrastructure like substations across the majority of sites will save months of delays, reduce costs and accelerate the delivery of the rapid charging hubs drivers need. "It's the result of months of collaboration between industry and government and we're proud to have played a key role in making it happen." Switching to an electric vehicle can bring a range of benefits for drivers, particularly as the market continues to expand. This includes financial benefits like the running costs being as low as 2p per mile. As the market expands, EV cars are becoming more affordable, with 2 in 5 used EVs now under £20,000 and 29 brand new models for under £30,000. Their engines have also improved, with most new EVs boasting a range of nearly 300 miles on one charge. The new government rule is helping to make it easier than ever to drive an electric vehicle, with the hopes of encouraging more accessible charging stations across the UK.
