Games24x7 lays off staff as Supreme Court hears 28% GST case
Mumbai: Games24x7 initiated layoffs over the past few days, coinciding with Supreme Court hearings on the 28% Goods and Services Tax (GST) on online gaming that began Monday.
The company declined to comment on the layoffs or disclose how many people were affected. However, two industry executives aware of the matter estimated that around 180 employees were let go.
As of October 2024, Games24x7 had a workforce of 821 employees, according to Tracxn data. This would imply a reduction of roughly 21.9% of its staff.

Online gaming: One nation, one law may blaze a way out of the maze
A third senior executive with direct knowledge of the matter, who requested anonymity, said the layoffs were 'necessary, since the company had over-hired to chase a fast stretch of growth over the past two years."
Another person familiar with the matter added that all those laid off were full-time employees. 'The layoff was done to reduce the impact of cost in its fantasy sports division, My11Circle."
My11Circle, Games24x7's fantasy gaming platform, competes with Dream11 and is the title sponsor of this year's Indian
Premier
League (IPL). Both executives cited the IPL sponsorship as a significant cost burden on the company.
Games24x7, which also operates RummyCircle, is backed by Tiger Global Management, The Raine Group, Malabar Investment Advisors, and Das & Co. The company has expanded internationally. In FY23, it reported
₹
1,988 crore in operating revenue—a 70% increase over the previous year—alongside a net loss of
₹
199 crore, 29% lower than its FY22 loss.
The layoffs come at a time of heightened scrutiny for the online gaming industry. On Monday, the government told the Supreme Court it would not distinguish between games of skill and games of chance for taxation under GST, and reiterated that the 28% levy should apply to the total entry amount in online games.
This tax policy, first imposed in 2023, has already had a sweeping impact on the sector. That year saw the most significant job losses, as companies reeled from the increased financial burden. Many firms have since instituted hiring freezes, with job postings reportedly dropping by 22% to 60%, particularly for junior to mid-level roles. Some early-stage startups are also struggling to sustain operations, with several seeking consolidation or shutting down entirely.

Amid lack of regulation, online gaming in limbo, failing to attract investment
In August 2023, MPL laid off around 350 employees—nearly half its workforce—citing a 350–400% increase in tax liability due to the new rules. The product team was particularly affected. Around the same time, Rush Gaming Universe cut 55 jobs, or 25% of its staff, attributing the decision to the GST regime.
The real-money gaming platform Quizy shut down operations altogether. Its founder, Sachin Yadav, cited the revised taxation rates—including the removal of the TDS exemption limit and a flat 30% TDS on all winnings—as key reasons for the closure.

In November 2023, Mumbai-based game-streaming platform Loco laid off 40 employees, accounting for 36% of its workforce. The company framed this as a strategic restructuring to enhance cost efficiency and support global expansion.
Despite the upheaval, India's online gaming user base continues to grow. According to the FICCI-EY Report 2025, the number of online gamers in the country rose to 488 million in 2024, with projections indicating further growth.

After losing the IPL 2025 final to RCB, partner of Preity Zinta makes a special request to BCCI for.....
The 18th edition of the IPL concluded recently, in which Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) created history by winning the title for the first time. Viewership records were broken this season and the brand value of the league also reached new heights. The brand value of the IPL is increasing with every season and at present it has become the second most valuable league in the world after America's NFL. However, the gap between NFL and IPL is still quite big. Punjab Kings co-owner Mohit Burman has suggested that the IPL window be extended from 3 to 4 months (12-16 weeks). He said that other big leagues like the NFL (4.5 months), Premier League (9 months) and NBA (7 months) run for a longer period, giving them an advantage in brand building and fan engagement. In a conversation with PTI, Mohit Burman said, 'We are second after NFL in value per match, but we are still behind in total brand value. If we want to get there, we need a window of 12-16 weeks.' Burman further said, 'Longer window will give us a chance to tell better stories, increase competition and create more value for fans, broadcasters and sponsors. Just increasing the time will not do anything, during that time we will also have to focus on content, fan engagement and off-season planning.' At present, 10 teams play 74 matches and the tournament gets a window of 9-10 weeks. But there is news that from 2028, the number of matches in IPL can be increased to 94, although the number of teams will not increase. This proposed plan will allow every team to play an equal number of home and away matches, which will automatically increase the league window. However, it is not possible to implement it before 2028 as the schedule till 2027 is already fixed.

CBIC lays down plan for supportive, people-focused tax regime
New Delhi: The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), the government's indirect tax policy body, has laid down an annual plan for a supportive, people-focused and tech-driven tax administration for FY26, its chairperson Sanjay Kumar Agarwal said. In a communication to field officers, Agarwal told different zonal offices to prepare their own annual strategies based on the priorities set by the CBIC. The plan covers areas like GST, customs, human resource optimization, grievance redressal and capacity building among others, Agarwal said in the communication posted on CBIC's website. The plan reflects an 'aspiration for a facilitative, technology-driven, and citizen-centric tax administration,' Agarwal said. 'A decentralized, yet coordinated approach will be vital in ensuring that our efforts are responsive, measurable, and impactful throughout the year,' Agarwal stated. The central government has estimated an indirect tax collection of ₹ 17.3 trillion in the current financial year, expecting an 8.35% annual growth collectively from central excise duty, customs and GST. On GST, authorities have gradually increased the disclosure requirements to keep an eye on different points in the supply chain. Central and state GST authorities have also increasingly lowered the monetary threshold for various reporting requirements. This enables them to ensure that economic activity does not go unreported and that GST is collected. Customs duty collections—both basic customs duty and IGST on imports—will depend on the value of imports, while excise duty receipts will depend on consumption growth in fossil fuels. The CBIC's emphasis on a 'facilitative' tax administration comes in the context of signals from policy makers to ensure that ease of doing business is not compromised while collecting taxes. Last month, finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman cautioned regulators that foreign investors were watching and any delays in approvals, lengthy litigation, and transparency gaps could hamper India's ability to strike trade deals in an uncertain global environment, Mint reported on 20 May. Last year, the then revenue secretary Sanjay Malhotra had cautioned tax officials to be careful not to hurt the economy's interests in the bid to mop up increased revenue.

Khandu hails 11 years of transformative governance under PM Modi's leadership
'For 11 years, it has been a journey dedicated to serving the poor and marginalised, empowering the last person in the queue with dignity, opportunity, and hope,' the chief minister said in a series of posts on X. Reflecting on the Narendra Modi government's journey since 2014, Khandu described it as a saga of 'Seva, Samarpan, and Sankalp' (service, dedication, and resolve) to build a 'viksit Bharat' (developed India). Itanagar, Jun 9 (PTI) As the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre marks one year of its third consecutive term, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Monday lauded its commitment to inclusive development and national transformation over the last 11 years. He highlighted the government's focus on shifting the country from a welfare-driven model to one of self-reliance, where transformative policies have redefined the socio-economic landscape. The 11 years of service, he said, exemplifies a vision rooted in justice and empowerment for all sections of society. Underscoring the youth-centric policies of the Modi government, Khandu emphasised the efforts to nurture the 'Amrit Peedhi', the young generation of new India, through education, innovation, and entrepreneurship. 'From Start-Up India to Digital India, NEP to PM Vishwakarma, every step is shaping a confident, self-reliant generation ready to lead the future,' he noted, reaffirming that the government's long-term investments are aimed at preparing the youth to become the drivers of India's growth story. On the economic front, the chief minister praised the transformation of India into a hub of Ease of Doing Business, powered by resilient reforms and digital innovation. He pointed to simplified compliance systems, the implementation of GST, and startup-friendly policies as evidence of a bold, forward-thinking economic strategy. '#11YearsOfSeva has been about empowering enterprises, boosting investments, and unlocking India's economic potential,' he said in one of the posts. Khandu also acknowledged the support extended to India's middle class under the Modi administration. From lower income tax rates and interest subsidies for homebuyers to digital payments through UPI and improved urban mobility through smart cities and Vande Bharat trains, the chief minister said the reforms have touched everyday lives in meaningful ways. 'The honest taxpayer is finally being respected, supported, and heard,' he added. The chief minister's reflections came as the nation observed the first anniversary of NDA 3.0, with party leaders across the country highlighting the milestones achieved under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership.
