It's a battle of 'The Brazilians' with millions up for grabs.
TEAM NEWS
There are no major injury set backs to report on.
Meaning, Miguel Cardoso has a fully fit squad to choose from. So, there are expected to be little to no changes to the Sundowns team that lost 4-3 to German giants, Borussia Dortmund.
The biggest talking point will be Ronwen Williams. Thereafter, Lebo Mothiba. Williams blunder cost Sundowns a goal against Dortmund. Whilst, Mothiba has been very good off the bench. Thus, causig Cardoso to consider benching Williams and to start Mothiba.
However, I expect Cardoso to keep faith in Bafana Bafana captain, Williams. Meanwhile, Iqraam Rayners has been to go to be dropped. Therefore, expect a similiar line-up to the one that took on Dortmund.
MILLIONS UP FOR GRABS AS HISTORY BECKONS
The winner of this match will earn a staggering R35 million.
So, if Sundowns win they will add R35 million to the R205 million they have already made at the FIFA CWC in the USA. This is because they received a R170 million participation fee for qualifying. Thereafter, they went on to beat Uldan FC 1-0 to add another R35 million to their tournament earnings.
Ultimately, Sundowns have to win to qualify for the Round of 16.
However, it must be noted that they would still take home R20 million in the unfortunate event of a draw.
SUNDOWNS HAVE IT ALL TO PLAY FOR. DO YOU THINK THEY WILL CONQUER FLUMINENSE TO BOOK THEIR PLACE IN THE ROUND OF 16?

Miguel Cardoso: Arthur Sales not a replacement for Lucas Ribeiro at Mamelodi Sundowns

AmaZulu's Ben Motshwari and Mamelodi Sundowns' Arthur Sales fight for the ball during their Betway Premiership match. Image: Backpagepix Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso believes Arthur Sales is a very good player who will be key to the club's success — but he was quick to dispel any suggestion that the lanky forward is a direct replacement for his Brazilian compatriot Lucas Ribeiro. The Portuguese coach essentially confirmed speculation that Ribeiro will be leaving the club while speaking to the media during the post-match press conference following their 2-0 Betway Premiership victory over AmaZulu on Tuesday night. Ribeiro — the standout performer of last season and winner of both the Footballer of the Year and Players' Player of the Year awards, as well as the Golden Boot for the 2024/25 campaign — is believed to be heading to Qatar. Sales played on the right-hand side, the very position where Ribeiro previously shone. But Cardoso was quick to play down any expectations or pressure being placed on the younger Brazilian. 'It's important that we understand one thing,' he said. Video Player is loading. First of all, people should look at him as himself and not imagine that, now he's playing on the right, they'll see Lucas Ribeiro. 'There's no one who is going to be Lucas Ribeiro, and the coach is not looking for someone to be Lucas Ribeiro on the right — because that doesn't exist.' If ever there was confirmation that the attacker — who also won the award for Best Goal at the FIFA Club World Cup in the USA — is on his way out of Chloorkop, this was surely it. 'Lucas is Lucas, and Arthur is Arthur. Each player has his own characteristics. Arthur is a very good player who arrived in South Africa and wasn't given the attention and credit he deserves. 'Now, gradually, people are starting to understand. And if you look at the numbers — how he impacted the team last year — you'll realise that whenever he came onto the pitch, he was always contributing goals and assists. He was already important last year with the goals he scored.'

Sundowns coach Cardoso wants behind-the-scenes issues sorted out

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso wants behind-the-scenes issues with some players to be resolved as soon as possible. The Brazilians, who started the campaign with wins over Richards Bay and AmaZulu and a draw with Chippa United, are dealing with speculation about the future of defender Khuliso Mudau and attacker Lucas Ribeiro. Mudau and Ribeiro did not feature against Richards Bay, AmaZulu and Chippa United for reasons that have not been clarified and it remains to be seen if they will play for the club again. There was an issue with attacker Peter Shalulile, but he is back with the team and came on as a late substitute in the 2-0 Betway Premiership win against AmaZulu on Tuesday at Loftus and he looks likely to stay with the club this season. Speaking after the AmaZulu win, Cardoso said the club is dealing with unresolved issues so they can focus on the business of the league where matches are coming in quick succession. Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso wants issues behind the scenes sorted out ASAP. WATCH full press conference ➡️➡️➡️ — Mahlatse Mphahlele (@BraMahlatse) August 13, 2025 'I would like them to be [resolved] as quick as possible,' said Cardoso. 'It would have been better if they were handled before the start of the season, but things happened after that. We are dealing with the situation in the best possible way. 'The club is professional and capable to solve issues we have. The club is not about sales [selling players] because we know where we want to go. I need to continue working with the team and I will always give my best with the players I have.' Cardoso still has senior players such as Ronwen Williams, Denis Onyango, Aubrey Modiba, Mosa Lebusa, Grant Kekana, Marcelo Allende, Teboho Mokoena, Themba Zwane, Tashreeq Matthews and Shalulile. 'The players in the locker room will always fight for the badge on the shirt. That is what we are going to do and I believe that's the correct way to handle the situation. 'In a club such as Sundowns, that exposes players to the level of international football at the Fifa Club World Cup and they did well, it is normal there will be [issues]. 'But we cannot allow those things to happen the way they should not. We are not on sales [selling players], but people must respect the value of what we have in the team.' With persistent questions about Ribeiro and Mudau, Cardoso said it is not an easy situation to manage. 'It's not easy to deal with what's happening and not be concerned about it or believe it does not have an effect on the team. We would be naive to think things can happen and the players don't relate to those things. 'They are friends in the locker room, they speak, but it is possible to keep a strong mentality and the will to win every match despite those things happening. 'The market is always tough and after the Fifa Club World Cup, where the team performed at the level they did, there is always instability because of proposals that arrive. 'It is like that, but the club is professional. The maturity we find in the club will allow the players to understand things are being handled in the right way. 'It is taking time and you need time to solve them, but in time they will be solved. Until then it is important that we win as many games as possible so that when players come back or we reinforce we take the team to another level.'

Spanish coach Riveiro lays down the law for Ahly stars

Riveiro moved to Ahly last May and has yet to celebrate a victory. Spanish coach Jose Riveiro has laid down the law to the stars of African giants Al Ahly of Egypt as they prepare for another CAF Champions League campaign. Cairo-based Ahly have won the elite African club competition a record 12 times — seven times more than closest rivals Zamalek of Egypt and TP Mazembe from the Democratic Republic of Congo. ALSO READ: Ouaddou 'disappointed' after Pirates loss to Gallants But last season they fell in the semi-finals to Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa, losing the tie on away goals after Yasser Ibrahim conceded an own goal in the final minute of regular time. Defeat was particularly painful for the Cairo Red Devils as it was the fourth time they had won back-to-back titles only to fail to create history by lifting the trophy three consecutive times. After three seasons and five trophies with Orlando Pirates in South Africa, Riveiro moved to Ahly last May and has yet to celebrate a victory. Ahly drew with Inter Miami and Porto, who they led four times, at the Club World Cup in the United States and lost to Brazilian outfit Palmeiras. If the 49-year-old Spaniard believed the Egypt Premier League kick-off last weekend would bring a chance of fortunes, he was mistaken. Away to Modern Future, who finished 14th last season, Ahly had to come from behind to secure a 2-2 draw thanks to a Yassin Marei goal. 'There is no place for names, and no room for favouritism,' said a visibly angry Riveiro after that match. 'Whoever proves himself in training and in matches will get chances — whoever disobeys instructions will have no role in the team.' – No future – Queried by reporters about his line-up, Riveiro said: 'I am the coach and I decide who participates and who does not'. Riveiro stressed to his squad the need for full commitment to his tactics, warning those who failed to follow them would have no future at Ahly. He echoed the comments of the last two Ahly coaches, South African Pitso Mosimane and Swiss Marcel Koller, that Ahly want to win every competition they are involved in. But Riveiro knows winning the Champions League is of paramount importance for several reasons, including qualification for the 2029 Club World Cup. They have a first round bye in qualifying and will tackle the winners between Aigle Noir of Burundi and ASAS of Djibouti for a place in the group phase. The Club World Cup this year gave Ahly and the other three African representatives, Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa, Esperance of Tunisia and Wydad Casblanca of Morocco, unrivalled riches. Each club received $9.5 million for qualifying plus an additional $2 million for a win and $1 million for a draw. Sundowns did best, taking home $12.5 million. Wydad will not be involved in the coming Champions League as they finished third in the Moroccan league, leaving champions Renaissance Berkane and runners-up FAR Rabat to represent the kingdom. FAR and the other seven quarter-finalists last season, including eventual champions Pyramids of Egypt will be back, and the field includes 10 former champions and six winners of other CAF competitions. Pyramids will face Rwandan army outfit APR for the third straight season in qualifying and will be expected to complete a hat-trick of aggregate victories. Should the defending champions advance, they will face Insurance of Ethiopia or Mlandege of Zanzibar for a group place.
