
Meet the people who don't skip ads online
Every time there's a furore around ads interrupting our content experience, I can't help but think of a set of people for whom this is just another day at work. Media planners, marketing consultants and ad strategists have to sit through ads not because they can't afford to go ad-free, but because it's part of the job.
Their work requires constant monitoring of ads across platforms. Exposure becomes essential market research, almost like an audit, some of them tell me. It helps them advise clients, track competitor strategies, and stay on top of where brands are showing up. And over time, this constant exposure shapes how they consume media.
Mumbai-based Geetanjali Bhattacharji, who's spent over three decades in media and marketing, says it often feels like being 'stuck at a party where everyone's trying to sell you something.' Bhattacharji is the founder of Glassbox Ventures, a business and strategy consultancy. 'Sometimes I wonder if I'm reading the news or just a cleverly disguised commercial,' she says. The result? 'It's made me a more cautious and selective media consumer, and maybe a little more cynical too.'
For Aditi M, a digital marketing professional from Mumbai, the impact is different. 'YouTube is my primary music platform, and the newer mid-video unskippable ads have made the experience of listening to a song a lot more annoying,' she says. As part of her job, she still has to watch and analyse those ads for potential client opportunities.
I relate to this, too. I've resisted getting YouTube Premium even though I pay for Spotify. My reasoning: what kind of brands are allocating ad dollars to the world's biggest video-streaming platform tells you a lot about the state of business and the role of digital media in it. And the content of the ads—the plot, the meme references, the casting—reveals how storytelling is evolving and culture is shifting. Besides, ads on Spotify are torture, with their repetitive storylines. No wonder it is widely suspected to be a clever nudge to make people buy the subscription.
Aditi's occupational hazard extends beyond YouTube. Early in her career, she worked on seeding branded content into films—figuring out how to integrate products into scenes without disrupting the narrative. 'You'd spend weeks trying to get a placement just right,' she recalls. By the time the film was released, she'd be so immersed in the mechanics of selling that she no longer wanted to watch it. 'I see every piece of content from a sales perspective now. It's off-putting, but you can't help it.'
What feels like forced ad consumption to some is a source of curiosity for digital media veteran Karthik Nagarajan, even two decades into the business. 'I consider myself a great target for ads,' says Chennai-based Nagarajan, CEO of Hogarth India, a WPP-owned content company. When an ad influences him, he breaks it down to understand why. 'Tapping into your instincts as a consumer gives you an edge as a marketer,' he says. 'Further, I don't just see ads through an audit lens—they're also a form of art,' he adds.
Either way, ad-watchers make you appreciate that not all viewers have the luxury of being annoyed by ads. Some are too busy taking notes.

Despite an increase in natural disasters and urban security risks, home insurance has yet to gain real traction among Indian households. A recent survey of Policybazaar highlights the deep gap in adoption, while 39 per cent of those exploring home insurance went ahead with a purchase, a far larger segment remains hesitant due to confusion, low perceived need, and a lack of urgency. Natural calamities top the list of triggers The study shows that natural disasters are the single biggest factor pushing Indians to consider home insurance. Around 41 per cent of respondents cited calamities such as floods, earthquakes, cyclones, and storms as reasons to secure their homes. This isn't surprising given the increasing frequency of such events across India, from the devastating floods in Himachal Pradesh to cyclones lashing Odisha and West Bengal. For many, ongoing home loans are another strong motivator. About 31 per cent said they view home insurance as a financial safety net that ensures their loan repayments continue without major disruption in case of a mishap. Theft concerns, especially in densely populated urban and semi-urban areas, were raised by 30 per cent of respondents. Other risks like fire accidents, gas cylinder explosions, water leakages, lightning strikes, voltage fluctuations, and even incidents like riots or terrorism have also emerged as triggers, albeit for a smaller segment of buyers. A market riddled with hesitation While 39 per cent of those exploring options made purchases, mostly homeowners in standalone houses or societies, the rest are either still exploring or have decided not to buy. Here's what's holding them back: Confusion over policy selection (27 per cent): Many struggle to understand the fine print, coverage limits, and exclusions across different policies, leading to decision paralysis. Perceived lack of necessity (23 per cent): This group believes home insurance is unnecessary as they haven't experienced major losses before. Lack of urgency (18 per cent): Even interested buyers often drop off midway, unable to prioritise the purchase amidst other financial commitments. Need for education and simplified offerings Experts point out that insurers need to step up efforts to educate consumers and simplify their offerings. The current range of policies often overwhelms first-time buyers with technical jargon and too many options. 'Insurers must focus on demystifying home insurance and offering tailored products with clear communication. This could go a long way in bridging the adoption gap,' says Sagar, a Delhi-based real estate broker and industry observer. For homeowners, especially those with active home loans or living in disaster-prone regions, home insurance can serve as an affordable layer of protection against unexpected events.

GRSE launches last of 8 anti-submarine warfare ships for Indian Navy
Defence PSU Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) on Monday (July 21, 2025) launched the eighth and last ship, in a series of anti-submarine warfare shallow water crafts, built for the Indian Navy. The ship, named Ajay, was launched by Priya Deshmukh, wife of Vice Admiral Kiran Deshmukh, chief of materiel of the Indian Navy, who was the chief guest at a function in Kolkata. The Kolkata-based warship maker has built eight anti-submarine warfare shallow water crafts for the Indian Navy, a GRSE official said. These ships are versatile platforms and can participate in a variety of operations, he said. The GRSE official also said these ships are designed and built with low draughts and are thus capable of coastal operations, he said. They are equally capable of low-intensity maritime operations and laying mines, he said. "These 77.6-metre-long and 10.5-metre-wide warships are also capable of full-scale sub-surface surveillance in coastal waters and can carry out operations against surface platforms as well," he said. They can carry out coordinated anti-submarine operations with aircraft. These warships pack a lethal anti-submarine suite comprising lightweight torpedoes, ASW rockets and mines, the official added.
